What is your favorite Christmas movie?
Obviously, everyone loves "It's a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart, but who has another favorite or several favorite Christmas movie(s)????
My favorite is "A Christmas Story" where Ralphie yearns for a BBgun but his mom keeps telling him he is going to shoot his eye out. Love the scene of him in the rabbit p.j.'s given as a gift by his aunt. Ditto for the table lamp (shaped like a leg) prize his dad wins in contest. Ditto for his dad cussing at the furnace.......so many nostalgic scenes. A Christmas Story (1983) - Synopsis A Christmas Story (1983) set in early 1950’s?? |
Mine for the past few years, is "A Christmas Snow"
|
I love all the classic Christmas movies but my favorite is "Christmas Vacation." We watch it every year and still laugh until we cry.
|
I'll second "Christmas Vacation"!

Thanks for suggestion............. Kathleen (Catherine Mary Stewart) has carried around the unwanted memory of her father abandoning her and her mother on Christmas Eve. For the past 30 years, she has blamed her mother for that night and refuses to celebrate Christmas in any fashion. Although she has tried to forget her past, it has not forgotten her, and in the days leading up to Christmas she finds herself stuck in her own home with two strangers, Sam (Muse Watson), a gentle older man Kathleen took in for the night and Lucy (Cameron ten Napel), the daughter of her soon to be fiancé (Anthony Tyler Quinn). As the storm brings her face to face with the hurts of her past, she will have to choose one path; letting go and grabbing hold of a life changing forgiveness or continuing to carry her pain and bitterness with her. |
The Bishop's Wife with Cary Grant and Loretta Young.

"A Christmas Story" with Ralphie and the Red Ryder rifle!
|
"Bad Santa" with Billybob Thornton is always a "must" every year.

I like all of the afore mentioned movies but we watch Elf over and over and love it. It has become a tradition to turn all the lights off and just sit with the Christmas lights on and watch Elf with a box of popcorn!

Holiday Inn.

Does anyone remember "The Gathering"?
Starring Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton. Gruff businessman separated from his family learns he has only months to live. Very emotional and heart warming Christmas story. You cant find a dvd but it can be viewed online via youtube. It is my favorite of all time.
|
We also like all of the above...Elf, Christmas Vacation, etc...
Some others not yet mentioned are; "Home Alone" We watched that the other day after not seeing it in years and it was good. Funny seeing the crooks steal valuable VCR's..... "Scrooged" is also a good one. A little known one that is truly one of my favorites is "The Fourth Wise Man" starring Martin Sheen. If you can find it, it is truly a treasure. Another rare one is "The Christmas Gift" starring John Denver. My wife likes "The Night they Saved Christmas" starring Jaclyn Smith, Art Carney as Santa, and June lockhart as Mrs. Santa. It's about an oil company drilling up by the north pole threatening North Pole City. "Going My Way" and "The Bells of St. Mary's" are also good. Most folks like "White Christmas" but the earlier film, "Holiday Inn" is my favorite of the two.... Frank |

Another good one we like to watch with the grandkids is "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (2000) with Jim Carrey. An added bonus is the song by Faith Hill "Where are you Christmas."
|
Although it's an hour long I don't know if it qualifies it to be called a movie:
Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol 2) A Christmas Story 3) The original 1947 making of Miracle on 34th Street. |

And Miracle on 34th Street (only the one w/Natalie Wood) |
A Christmas Stiry! We are even the proud owners of " a major award", we had it in the window until we closed on the sale of the house today......sadly, now in storage until next year when it will magically appear in Gilchrist!

Favovorite Christmas Movies
I never miss "A Christmas Story", "It's A Wonderful LIfe", and I really like the George C. Scott version of "A Christmas Carol."
My kids and I are going to see "Elf" on stage in a couple of weeks. I can't wait to see that. Of course, if you haven't seen the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, there's just nothing that compares. (Yes, I know that this thread is about Christmas movies but there's just something about live theatre that makes Christmas special.) |

Thanks for posting. What you said is so true. |
I'm also a fan of "A Christmas Story." No matter how many times I see it, it always makes me laugh and remember my childhood.

For all of us who love "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE"......here's some background information I found on a genealogy site re Frank Capra..... Frank Capra's Wonderful Film Gave America Hope When We Needed it Most Part 1 of 3: Frank Capra Italian Memories by Cookie Curci During the dark decade of the 1930s, Frank Capra's films brought light where there was darkness and hope where there was despair to a nation in desperate need of an uplifting message. If only for a few minutes, in a darkened theatre, Capra's films inspired irrepressible optimism in American audiences and when they left the theater, they left feeling better about themselves and the future of their world. It's a Wonderful Life is arguably one of Capra's most popular films. The Italian American director emigrated here from Sicily during the great migration As an immigrant himself, who celebrated his 6th birthday while in steerage aboard a ship bound for America, Capra felt a strong kinship for the suppressed and many of his characters symbolized the prejudice that awaited him in his new country, a prejudice that gripped a post war America and threatened the hope that inspired a generation of immigrants. Few of us can recall every scene from a favorite film. What we do recall are small memorable pieces of time from these films. Frank Capra's Christmas classic, It's a Wonderful Life (1946) is one of these uniquely enduring films. At the close of the film someone bumps the Christmas tree and a bell shakes and rings and little ZuZu says, "Look Daddy! Teacher says, Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings." My generation grew up with ZuZu in our homes each Christmas. To us she represented everything that was still innocent and pure in our lives- the hope of what our world could be. Actress Karolyn Grimes, who portrayed ZuZu Bailey, was six years old when she delivered that indelible line. Today, the actress has released a book titled, ZuZu's Wonderful Life in the Movies. Anyone who is, was, or will be a fan of classic films will relish this book. Each page is filled with photos and personal side notes on her many films and the actors who starred in them. I recently wrote Karolyn Grimes an email expressing how much I enjoyed her new book and also her work in the Christmas classic It's a Wonderful Life. I told her how the film had inspired my own appreciation for my community and how I fancied Willow Glen as my own "Bedford Falls" with its friendly neighbors, soda shops, drug stores and, of course, a friendly savings and loan. I received this thoughtful reply from the actress: Part 2: A Letter From Karolyn Grimes (a.k.a. Zuzu) Part 3: It's a Wonderful Life |
My favorite Xmas movie is the original Scrooge with Alister Sims playing the part of Scrooge. Great movie with a great story of what Xmas should be. :clap2:
