Liver and Onions

Did a search for the next "seating" of the liver and onions group and the postings were a little old. Is there still a group that meets? When? Where?
Would appreciate any info. Thanks.

redwitch 01-25-2013 06:24 PM

Never heard of it but would love to join it. One of my fave meals.

deano_hoosier 01-25-2013 06:31 PM

I think I read where they have met, in the past at Palmer Legends.... that is a tentative "I think". Now if it was chicken livers and onion straws.... count me in.

Toojays have the best chicken livers in onion gravy that I have ever had in my entire life and their regular liver and onions is excellent too.

Thanks, Gracie. I love liver and onions and my hubby won't let me cook them in the house. Says it smells too bad. Does Toojays have it on the menu every day?

Yum! :icon_hungry: :icon_hungry: :icon_hungry:

Oh good grief, I'm there! We both love liver & onions. Chicken livers too. Haven't made it in years after learning all about cholesterol. We should get a group together and go up there. I don't like to order it when out with other people because it grosses so many others out.

I'm keeping this piece of information in mind!

Sounds like fun to me!

I don't indulge often for the very reason you stated. But we could have an every other month liver get together.

jblum315 01-26-2013 09:20 AM

When we were at The Riverfront Hotel last week The Liver and Onions Club was in the dining room. We laughed when we saw the name of the club. The Villages really does have a club for everyone's "taste"

I would love to go, but we won't be there till April. My husband does not like it either, and its hard to find decent liver to cook and no fun by yourself. I'll look forward to hear where you are going to go and how it is. Enjoy!

Oh boy, you really want me to retire… I love liver and onion and grew up with this once a week… This sound like a good excuse to get together… But once every other month sounds like me waiting 4 years to retire… so far out of reach… Hope you get this and enjoy… I make them often, calf, chicken, liver pate, yummy!

OldDave 01-26-2013 05:51 PM

If you allow visitors, we'll be there the last week of March. My wife absolutely loves them...and I can get them down without embarassing her. Actually I like fried chicken livers...haven't had them in years. The calves liver, again, I can choke it down.

justjim 01-26-2013 07:09 PM

Let me and Angel know date and time as we both do Liver and Onions. Would love it if we can fit it into our schedule. Ok to send a PM.

I’ll make time, where, when love good liver and lots of onions. Toojays? Assume a restaurant or is this the chef at Palmer Legends?

obxgal 01-26-2013 09:35 PM

I had read before about how great Toojay's chicken livers were. Told hubby about it because he just loves fried chicken livers, so we went. He looked at the menu before we were seated and didn't see "fried" chicken livers and then he asked if they were fried and was told no they don't fry then. Needless to say, we left, stopped at the store, bought some and came home and fried them ourselves.

BTW for those of you that have had the chicken livers, how do they cook them??

Do you mean that your hubby likes them breaded and deep fried? On their menu, Toojays says they are sauteed. That's the same thing as fried to me, unless you mean breaded and fried. Toojays is on Canal St. up by Sumter (gawd, I hope I'm right!).

We used to sail from MI up to the North Channel in Canada. There was a Hungarian restaurant on an island, the most wonderful restaurant for being in such an out-of-the-way place. They sauteed strips of beef liver and red and green peppers and onions, in kind of a marinara sauce. It's not how I ever had liver, but I still drool when I think of that meal.

nhpaul 01-26-2013 10:57 PM

liver and onions...

my father's favorite meal. however, his version of liver was calves liver (not chicken liver) and sauteed onions. where's the best place for that combo of liver and onions??? thanks.

Beef liver he eats sauteed but not the chick livers. They have to be breaded and deep fried.

According to Gracie's earlier post, Toojays has excellent beef liver as well as chicken livers. Also, someone said Palmers Legend, and I think I saw it on their menu last year.

jblum315 01-26-2013 11:16 PM

Toojay's liver and onions is as good as I've had anywhere. Dellicious.

CFrance is right. They are gently fried, not deep fried. Tell your husband he is missing a treat for your mouth. I had NEVER had them that way and my dear friend Ruthie told me about them and she was right.

Of course right, Ruthie.

Were you there for dinner or lunch? We like to go there for lunch. Now that you mention it, I remember they had liver on their menu. I just don't i you could get it for lunch. I must call!

lightworker888 02-02-2013 08:40 AM

Count us in.

Love liver and onions as long as the liver isn't over cooked but just pink, like a rare steak. Got a Mme Benoit recipe years ago and have used it ever since and converted my DH to liver with it. Liver is cut into french fried size slices and breaded with flour and thyme and fired just enough. Soooooooo tender. Count me in if you go in March. We are hoping to be down by the 10th and staying til the end of May.

Sorry folks but liver and onions are one meal I will pass on. I love sautéed onions but just cannot eat liver. Just one of those things I never cared for as a kid even though my Mom made it often for the family. Not a picky eater and there are only a few food that I will never eat and liver is one of them.

We might as well wait till March so Lighthouse888 can go. Maybe Toojays will take rez for a group?

Virtual Geezer, that's okay. I can't stand lima beans--terrible mouth feel and awful taste. I would gag on them. As kids, we used to hide them in our napkins and throw them out the bedroom window. Some things you just don't grow to like.

CFrance 02-02-2013 09:10 AM

Lighthouse888 Sorry! I meant Lightworker. Need to work on my editing skills...

marianne237 02-02-2013 09:32 AM

Well, guess we didn't find out when and where the original liver & onions group meets, but it looks like we can start our own TOTV group. BTW, just enjoyed a good lunch portion of liver at Pete's Diner in Fruitland Park last week. A very small restaurant with friendly staff. The best IMHO was at Tasters Choice in Leesburg which closed last year. Made a special trip to Eustis to dine at the Mason Jar because the tv lady said theirs was so good....found it to be a waste of time.
So, please count me in...hubby is happy with a hamburger.

graciegirl 02-02-2013 10:18 AM

Excellent idea. March. TOTV'rs that like liver and onions. CFrance is kicking, well she is taking names.
