FOX News view of The Villages

I was watching The O'Reilly Factor a few minutes ago (around 8:45 pm) and O'Reilly was saying he thought the Super Bowl ad for Taco Bell showing a nursing home of senior citizens "escaping" and doing things like jumping in a pool, setting firecrackers off, eating tacos, and showing a senior lady with a "tramp stamp" was insulting to seniors.

One of his panel (McGirk) said he thought that looked like Saturday night at The Villages. He further went on to say that The Villages has a skyrocketing STD rate. Now, I find his characterization of The Villages residents to be extremely insulting.

I urge all readers to email O'Reilly and FOX News to demand an apology on television from McGirk.

Thank you. I am sick and tired of that ugly rumor. I wish it would go away!!!

Chazz 02-08-2013 09:27 PM

I didn't see the show, but from the description that was provided, I'm not offended. Even though it was inaccurate, I just don't get offended that easily. I get more miffed by the seeming endless need to apologize for non-PC slights that might offend only the most delicate sensibilities. Let's just laugh.:MOJE_whot:

It's not a rumor.

Seniors STDs rise: Seniors STDs rise with active sex lives - Orlando Sentinel

justjim 02-08-2013 09:40 PM

I've read that STD among seniors is up the last ten years----reasonable stat given today's society. However, up in TV?? Skyrocketing? TV is approaching a population of 100,000 seniors----I suppose you could make an assumption that STD could be up in TV but without some real hard data a comment that it's skyrocketing in TV is unfounded and just an "off the cuff remark". By sticking with one partner, nothing to worry about!

I would never watch o'reilly - and how do you know it not true ??? o'reilly and his gang would never lie --- would they ???

The "Ugly Rumor" Is NOT True

Please note that the Orlando Sentinel takes every opportunity to bash The Villages. I don't know why, but the newspaper seldom if ever has anything good to say about us.

I don't know the veracity of the source or the statistics that the Sentinel quoted, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that a very close doctor friend of mine who lives here in The Villages took the time to research all the available medical statistics which as a medical professional he has access to but the public does not.

He told me that the Sentinel's report is absolutely not true. He pointed out that "figures don't lie, but liars can figure" in noting that one additional case of STD on a very small base can be made to make the rise of disease very, very large. This is what happened with the report that the Sentinel fabricated to take another bash at The Villages.

Typical FOX news reporting. Say anything enough times and eventually the viewing audience starts believing its true.........and then quoting the story as fact.

I am wondering why anyone would watch OReilly in the first place.. He has developed his repulsive show style in an attempt to be entertaining. We have a lot of those on television today. Beck, Limbaugh, at least Colbert and John ??? (can't recall his name) admit to being comedians.

I will look at Fox News and find myself shaking my head with disbelief on how ridiculous those such as Hannity, Coulter, Ingraham, and others are when presenting their "fair and balanced" news. It is entertainment for me to see their viewpoints.

However, the characterization of The Villages by McGirk as a place for seniors with a skyrocketing STD rate was just repulsive.

For 2010 Sumter county had reported for all ages (for a population of 98,946)

1 case of infectious syphilis
169 cases of chlamydia
64 cases of gonorrhea

Sumter county had the 64th highest rate per 100,000 citizens of STD's in the state out of 67 or only three counties were lower than Sumter.

For the years 2000 - 2010 there were either 0,1, or a maximum of 2 cases of chlamydia in persons age 55 and over in Sumter county. And the total reported cases of combined syphilis, GC, and chlamydia in Sumter country for each year has only once been 4 (2001) , once 3 (2005), twice 2, three times one, and three times zero.

You cannot break down the data to determine if the reported cases are Villagers so this is as close as I can get it. Also obviously some Villagers live in other counties. It is interesting that as the population of the Villages grew, there were not more cases being reported, and most of the newer population would be in Sumter county.

This data does not include HIV/AIDS

Florida STD Trends

So not only is the rumor wrong, the data is readily available. As noted above, if you have one case last year and 2 cases this year that is a 100% increase in the illness but not a meaningful increase.

This was not a NEWS story Or a news report but an offhand comment by McGuirk in an effort to be funny. Slamming FOX news every chance we get is as bad as making unproven comments about the amount of STD's in TV.

You are doing the same thing when you slam others and an entire news network for a comment made by a guest commentator. Shame on you.

J sent an email to Bill O'Reilly thanking him for pointing out that the commercial was insulting to seniors.

I am not concerned with it. It was on FOX which is a laughing stock for news agencies.

That is quite the complement.

Fox News

If it is on Fpx News i must be true

Most comments are off topic and leaning toward political. The STD topic has been thoroughly discussed in the past.
