Today at Best Buy, approx, 9 customers in line, lady at front of line returning purchases, her cell phone rings, cashier starts to ring up return, she steps to one side continues dialogue about "nonsense", all customers getting "hot", customer behind her tells cashier, "if you don't let us go thru, please call the manager, cashier cancels her order and proceeds with customers, after 3 customers have gone thru, she finally ends the call and "tries" to return to front of line, casher tells her she will have to go to "end of line", she is irrate and stomps out of store, leaving her returns, remaining customers applaud cashier....It was a wonderful site....Please Please don't take calls when you are in checkout!!!:a040::a040::a040:

Good for her! One of my pet peeves in to be in a line with twelve items or less and someone is already ringing up 25 items..

It's funny how someone can't count to twelve but if he/she fed the machine a hundred doll bill, he/she could count her $37 dollars in change.

Had almost the same issue at Beall's yesterday pm. Lady steps up to check out with a line of about 5 customers behind her. Naturally she has to answer, carry on a loud conversation on her cell phone and come to a complete standstill as she is checking out. She just totally ignored everyone in line commenting to her.

I like it when a merchant has a sign that says "All cell phone calls must be ended before cashier will ring up purchases".

Should also apply to restaurants . Wait staff waiting on table customer on cell phone

I can believe it. I was #6 in line at JoAnn one day when the lady in front opened her bag, took out a sandwich wrapped in wax paper, opened it, ate it slowly and carefully, folded the wax paper back and put it back in her bag, took out a candy bar and slowly ate that, folded the candy wrapper and put it back in her bag. Finally she paid for her purchases and left the store.

I agree that is very annoying & rude. However I'm wondering why you are surprised by it. I can walk through any store in the area and there are always people yakking on their cell phones up and down the aisles, in the checkout lines and so on. Plus..this is not just a "young people's problem" as many would like to say. Most of the people I see on the phones are 50+. When I go into a store my phone stays in my truck. In fact if I'm driving around locally I rarely take my phone with me. I've got to wonder how we managed to live all those years without ever taking a call in the bread aisle at WalMart!

I absolutely agree! What do these people talk about? and don't you just love when someone is in the stall next to you in a bathroom yakking away?

It wouldn't bother me one blessed moment to have a "no cell phone zone" in stores and restaurants AND movie theaters. I also leave mine in the car most of the time. If you have to absolutely talk with someone that badly, go outside and sit on a bench or your car and yak away.

At the last iPAD meeting you could hear cellphones going off all over the room. Really folks, have some consideration for others trying to hear. Have they always been this rude, or just since they retired. It is hard to believe they worked with others with the kind of attitudes I have been seeing.

One should never use a cell phone if it distracts you from anything...driving, shopping, dinner (just rude) movie theater(not even text)...Some people seem to be addicted to there cells....I am convinced that use of cells should be totally against the law while driving ....I am also for blocking cells in certain businesses , such as movie theaters....

I realize there are times when some people forget to turn off their call phones.

There are times when the "vibrate" function should be used. Doctors offices ask you to turn off your cell phone and they definitely should be turned off in church and or at wakes/funerals.

To not turn them off or on "vibrate" is just being disrespectful of where you are and to other people. I don't for the life of me seem to get why some people think they are so important in that they have to receive every message or have instant access. I personally don't answer my cell phone if I am driving, Period, no exceptions. They can wait till I get to my destination or pull off the side of the road.

They do serve a vital function in that if you have an accident or get stuck on the road, you have the means to call for help, Other than that, give me an answering machine any day.

One day I happened to be at Savannah Center and decided to use the computer room. It's not uncommon for a cell phone to "ring" in that room. People know it's not right and they try to leave the room quickly but, even so, they have already disturbed everyone.

One woman, sitting next to me, had her cell phone ring and she didn't realize it was hers. She looked all around the room as if wondering whos phone it was. Then all of a sudden she goes, "oh" when she realizes it's hers, and she went running with her purse.

I was in a large department store and a man was talking on his phone. He said, "I'm over here by the shoes, where are you?" :)

Don't have a cell phone, don't want one. On Star is there if needed and at home is an answering machine. Where did we get this "need" to have instant talking on a phone?

Agree 100 percent. Especially in TV where everyone is retired. No bosses calling there.

The phrase that always get me is when I'm with someone ===the phone rings and they say "I've gotta get this!!!!!" (with urgency in their voice). Invaribly it's one of their kids, or someone just calling to chat. NEVER an emergency!!! RUDE.RUDE.RUDE!!!!!

Actually my wife & I are still working and the bosses do call. But that doesn't mean that the phone has to go with us every single minute of every day. As Groucho Marx once said on his radio show You Bet Your Life to a woman who had 9 children..."I love my cigar but I take it out of my mouth once in awhile."

We go to ST. Timothy's every sunday for mass, and it amazes me that the speaker has to announce before Mass to please turn off all cell phones and pagers, and at least every other week, half way thru mass you hear a cell phone going off!!

Are our lives SO IMPORTANT that we have to stay connected 24 hours each day so as not to miss anything?? Can we give one hour per week to reflect how truly blessed we are to be living our retirement years in such a wonderful environment like The Villages???

Must have been the same women who was in the nail salon at Sumter a week ago. This woman had her phone set to speaker (very loud speaker) and proceeded for some 20 minutes to make reservations to some place of the other annoying the technician, people sitting out front and around her. She could have cared less about anyone or anything. I just can't believe how ignorant and impolite people are with the cell phones.

OMG this woman is all over the Villages. Now I'm sure it's the same one..... Yep, watch the thread for complaints at both Best Buy and Bealls. It'll be her.......

Saw a restaurant with cell phone "deal"
 

Last year I saw one of those "short stories" on a news show about a restaurant (I want to say it was in Los Angeles) that was offering a 5% discount on the diners check, IF they "checked" their cell phones while they were in the restaurant. The driver for the offer was presented as a way for couples to "re-connect" by having undisturbed conversations while they are out together. I would love to see it become a "trend" everywhere.

Oh and by the way, I have texting completely shut off on my cell phone (can't get them or send them). If someone has to tell me something, they can call and if I am available, and it is appropriate, I will answer my phone and respond-otherwise the message can wait until I can get to it safely and without being rude. I lived without cell phones and text messages for over 30 years, and can't see why I absolutely have to always be on the phone or respond to messages as they are received.

Some people call cell phone calls "progress"????, In some cases, I call it "rudeness"....99.9 percent of the time the call can wait!

You know, you can use a cell phone any way you choose to...even one capable of sending/receiving texts. Being polite is a personal choice.

I think the rudest thing I have ever seen (off topic..no cell phone involved)..I was on a plane flying from Detroit to Florida. A Yuppie couple were a few rows ahead with their three children. The flight attendent told everyone to sit down and buckle up because we were taking off. At this point, the mother stood up, layed her child on the seat and proceeded to change a diaper. The attendent told her to sit down, she was stopping the plane from leaving. She totally ignored the attendent and continued changing the baby despite several admonisments. At the same time her husband was standing in the aisle instructing the other two children about their homework, making sure that we all knew they were homeschooled. I have worked many, many jobs with the public but I don't think I have ever seen a more ignorant piece of work than these two.

Actually, I think texting is the least rude way of communicating by cell phone. My phone gives a tiny beep when a text comes in, as opposed to a loud phone ringing. And taking the responsibility to REMEMBER to change the phone to vibrate when in church or other public meetings, etc., does the trick.

I like to have the phone with me in case of emergency--car accident, health emergency, etc. We don't have to discard technology. We just have to learn how to use it politely.

During the holidays, we saw a family dining out. The young girl with them was sitting on the chair with her feet up on the edge and texting her friends rather than enjoying time with her grandparents and parents. No one admonished her. Are we raising a group of knuckle headed rude people for the next generation?

I'm glad to hear that I'm not only person in Florida without a cell phone! I don't enjoy listening to people's personal conversations in stores, in restaurants, at the hairdressers, at the pool, while watching a movie, everywhere!

Times they do change. If cell phones were available when I was growing up I can assure you that my father would NEVER have allowed me to have one. Secondly, if this sort of scenario played out in front of my father, I wouldn't have been able to sit down for a week.
