What possesses people to try to run through the gates after a car or cart? Yesterday at the Del Mar gate a motorcycle breezed through right after a car and almost took the gate with him. Why? I'm never surprised anymore when I see this. What happens when they break the gate arm? Do they get caught? Do they pay for a new one? You see the gates broken all the time, or a post down. Just wondering.

I don't know if they can break a gate doing this. when the second vehicle goes through, a sensor is activated and the gate stops coming down and goes back up.

I see that a lot at the del mar gate. That gate is always crowded and I think the people that tries to sneak in think that they are going to speed up traffic. I think it should be manned and maybe it will cut down the gate being crashed Into. I mean come on if you don't have your pass just press the button. How hard is that. I think that is the worst gate in the villages for damage.

I think it has a camera there, and takes your picture?

People are lazy...don't want to slow and use their card ("IF" they have their card)!!

It's not like anyone can't push the button and be let in.......with no questions asked.

It's simply contributes to a false sense of security and prestige....in my opinion.

The gates are there to contol traffic flow for the golf carts - gives someone in a golf cart at the gate crossing at least half a chance to not get slammed by a car flying through.

That gate opens just by driving up
 

If I am thinking of the correct gate, it does not require any action such as a pass or pushing the button. Just drive up and it opens.

How did I learn this?

My wife and I were coming home with a takeout pizza and came to the gate. In front of us was a woman clearly having issues getting her gate pass out and opening her car window. Fifteen'ish seconds or so had passed. In the mean while someone in the cart behind us was yelling “Just drive up it opens” <over and over>. Finally I see a hand come out the window with the gate pass, but she cannot reach….. When I saw this I hopped out of my cart and used my card to open the gate for her. The woman said thanks and I told her “they say the gate just opens if you drive up to it”, and I hear from behind me in no uncertain terms “IT DOES”.

I then proceeded to use my gate pass to go through as normal, the ‘gate experts’ cart behind me zoomed right through with me and tailgated me until their turn off … Kind of gives me the warm and fuzzies all over…

The moral of the story, relax, help if you can and tail gaters :censored:

I agree with this 100% for most gates, but I do not think it applies here as there is no cart crossing unless I am having another "middle age" moment.

Hmmm....I hadn't thought of that, but that is a nice feature.

Not all gates have a cart path behind them though. :shrug:

I'm guessing the real reason/history is different.

It is my understanding that the gates are there to slow down traffic, period, whether there are golf cart paths or not. The people tailgate because they don''t want to stop and use their card. The gate comes down, and even if it has a sensor on it (which some don't), it may not have time to go back up before the tailgater hits it.

The one at St. Charles and the BV roundabout (going into St Jams) is broken frequently.

Village Community Development Districts

Good guess, OnTrack. Originally there was no little red button. A gate card was needed to open the gate. However, there was a button, maybe it was red. that let the driver communicate with someone who could remotely control the gate.

The County (Counties) stepped in and pointed out the roads and streets were owned and maintained by the County making them public roads. A decision was made to make the streets accessible via the red button but to also maintain the gates because of the safety issue. Problem solved, everybody happy except a few who do not realize the the importance of the safety they provide.

BTW, the safety issue was brought home to me yesterday. The exit gate at the north Morse gate prior to the roundabout was stuck in the open position. Traffic was supposed to stop before proceeding but that was universally ignored. Therefore, the steady stream of exiting autos created a long backup of carts. Inconvenient and dangerous.

See these people who "piggyback" through all the time at Del Mar gate.
