What was your favorite car, ever?

Back in the day I had a blue with white top 1967 Camaro RS/SS convertible. It had the rare 375 HP 396 L78 rat motor, four bolt mains, solid lifters, a huge double pumper three barrel Holley, 4 speed Hurst shifter and a 4:10 rear end, all factory equipment. It only got six mpg around the DC area and I had to use Hess 100+ octane gas because it had a 11:1 compression ratio. It had no A/C or power steering. It was made to go. That same model (not my own car) was chosen as the pace car in the Indianapolis 500 that year. Wish I had kept it.... I miss driving it to this day.

The Great Fumar 04-22-2013 05:29 PM

A 1955 plymouth belvedere convertable..........a class ride.....I now have a Lincoln towncar and if I had a can opener big enough I would take the top off.

fumar with a rag top ......:cold:

280 ZX! Was just saying the other day how much I missed that care.

casita37 04-22-2013 05:34 PM

That's an easy one. My first car was a 1970 Porche 914-6...rather rare and HOT! Gave it up for a Ford Club Chateau Van when I had twins. Dang....really wish we could have kept it.:(

Haha....didn't mean to imply I would rather have the car than the twins......LOL

1967 Olds 442. 400 CI, 4 bbl carburetor.

I had a 1972 TR6. Burgundy. I really wanted a TR4 or 4A--fire-engine red--but they had quit making them. Loved that car, but it broke and broke and broke. And broke some more. We had a guy who worked on foreign cars. My husband would call him and say, "This is Ron," and the guy would say, "Where is it now?" He once joked we sent him to the Bahamas.

But I still sigh every time I see one, even though I would probably need one of those eject seats to get out of it, it was so low to the ground.

I'm fully torn between my 1st car..a 1968 Buick Skylark and my 1990 Suburban. I'd have to flip a coin.

White and red two door Mercury with push button transmission -- late 50's or early 60's.

My favorite car that I owned was a '58 Chevy Impala convertible in turquoise. But my favorite car was my husband's '52 MGTD that I gave him for his 40th birthday

I am not sure since I never took them off. The car was amazingly maintenance free. About all I did was change the oil, the oil and air filters and lube it, put in new spark plugs (frequently) and adjust the timing. I bought my tires from a company called Market Tire, I think, which warrantied them for miles. I always wore them out long before the warranty ran out and had them replaced at whatever discount applied. The following paragraph is from Wikipedia. Apparently the compression ration was 11:1, not 10.5:1. Senior moment, I guess.

L-78: produced 1965-9, had 800 cfm Holley carburetor, 11:1 compression, forged pop-top pistons, aluminum high-rise intake manifold, steel crankshaft, solid lifter cam (same as the L-72; except in 1965 Z16 Chevelle), rectangular ("square") port closed chamber heads, and four-bolt main caps. It produced 375 hp (280 kW) in mid-size cars, 425 hp (317 kW) in Corvettes.[3]

I put in a Geharty(sp?) dyno tune kit which supposedly raised the HP to 425.

Rickg 04-22-2013 07:39 PM

What I now drive. Ctsv coupe. Corvette supercharged ZR 1 engine 560 hp. 190 mph top end. Please don't anybody jump in and ask why someone needs that much HP. Everyone to their own.

My 1968 Yenko Camaro. That car paid for quite a bit of my college costs. Most guys in California had never heard of Don Yenko, so had no clue what was under the hood of my baby (427 Vette engine; modified rear end and suspension; fiberglass hood). Add to the fact that girls couldn't drive and I was in drag race heaven -- loved racing in the Valley (San Fernando) for pinks and cash. And it got a whopping 4 miles per gallon with my lead foot. I still miss her.

69 Camaro SS Indy Pace Car convertible.

Bill-n-Brillo 04-22-2013 08:25 PM

The car of which I have the fondest memories - my second car, a 1966 Olds 442. Bucket seats, console, 4 speed - white, black vinyl top, red interior.....an unusual color combination for that type of car. Only had it for about a year and a half but have always missed it since then.

Promised my dad that I'd behave when I got it.......and ended up getting ticketed for drag racing. Tough to face him with that when I came home afterwards! Sold the car about 6 months later to pay for my next year of college.

Bought another one in the late '80s that Sandy and I kept for quite a few years. It was an identical car except for the colors. But it just never was the same as that first one.

Bill :)

It doesn't matter what car it was, it was my first car. Could have been a VW bug, or a Mustang or an Impala. It was 1968, and I was a Sophomore in High School. My best friend's parents bought him a 1964 Impala SS...I wanted a Mustang...What I got was a 13 year old Chevy. It was a 1955 Chevy 210. 2 door, 265 CID V8, "3 on the tree". No radio. The car had been the family car for all 13 years, Dad having bought it new in 1955 for $2000. I was sick of it, but it was now mine, and provided me some level of independence. Dad told me I had to pay him $200 for it and pay for my own insurance, and gas. I added a junk yard (AM) radio, and listened to Wolfman Jack out of Tijuana, Mexico (actually might have been Rosarito Beach). Wasn't long before I had earned enough $ being a busboy to be able to put "chrome reverse" wheels on it, and "wide oval" tires, to make it mine, vs my parents. Drove it for two years, then went to college, at which time I got $500 for it when I traded it in a piece of c***. I wish I had the '55 Chevy today!

CFrance 04-22-2013 08:58 PM

My very first car was a 1960 Triumph Herald, when I was in high school. Drove that through college. My brother was given a Morris Minor, which had the little levers that flipped out when you turned the blinkers on. (My father loved to buy used cars and fix them up.) We also briefly had a German car the name of which escapes me, but everything was in German, and instead of D for Drive it said Fahrt ("ride" in German). Of course being teenagers, this totally cracked my brother and I up, and all our friends.

mac9 04-22-2013 09:23 PM

My first car was a 1949 Plymouth Deluxe named "The Hindenberg" because she was the highest car in the parking lot and the easiest to find. Had the car throughout college and loved it. Would love to find one and restore it.:BigApplause:

Fumar - Long time no see, good to see you posting again.

I had a '59 Plymouth Convertible (maybe a Savoy?). Had about 5 $200 cars at any one time in the early 60's (still have 5 cars - hard habit to break. Just gave my daughter a beautiful '94 Cad Z rated Seville STS with only 40K miles on it).

I had a Red '62 (non-bugeyed) Sprite in '63/64. Bought it used for $1500. Hard to drive on the Chicago Dan Ryan cause it was so small the trucks couldn't see you and would change lanes over the top of you.

chuckinca 04-22-2013 09:49 PM

My favorite car - my wife's new '79 Mazda RX7. We did some wonderful things driving down Hwy 101 thru the California Redwoods in that car.

We had an Austin Healey in 1969 when we were dating. It had issues Tires that weren't quite right, a rag for a gas cap, and there was something wrong with the fuel pump in such a fashion that I would have to sit up on the back of the car and tickle the thing with a screwdriver.

It's name was car, and I inherited it with the husband, who in turn inherited my two Siamese cats... and my mother:evil6:

ijusluvit 04-22-2013 10:20 PM

1963 red Corvette coupe.
Purchased in 72 because it had less than 1000 miles. But it had been converted to a funny car. Huge hood scoop with blower and racing cams and a jacked up rear with baloney tires and flared fender wells. Regular street driving was tough.
It took twelve years to restore to original stock condition. Then I drove it for another twelve. A friend couldn't resist buying it because he wanted to do cruise nights and win ribbons. I kept my promise to my kids and used the proceeds for something fun - the down payment on a beachfront condo in NC which we loved for another twelve years.
Lots of fun for 36 years!

Barefoot 04-22-2013 10:24 PM

My first car was an old red TR3. But the car I really wanted was a MGTD.

jebartle 04-23-2013 04:21 AM

Wow! I had the same car and color

Wish I had it now, car auction sold a 63 for $100,000 last year!...Since NC (27 yrs) was our last stop b4 TV, can understand the love of NC beach condo!

A Nickey Camaro was another dealer modified car housing a 427 in 1967. I remember the Nickey and the Yenko Camaros. Don't you wish you had held onto your Yenko? This Nickey recently sold for $385K.

I have had a few interesting cars, from a '57 Chevy convertible to a '70 Porsche 914. I think my favorite was the '63 Mercedes 220SE coupe that was once owned by Bert Parks. It had class.

1966 Baracuda. I paid $300 for it in high school anddrove it until I got married at 24. The odometer didn't work so I don't know how many miles it had on it. I sold it to a collector who restored and his wife totaled it driving out of his garage.

Last auction I saw for the Yenko had it going for $290,00 about 4 years ago. Sadly, I totalled it (roadblock by CHP with no warning flares -- turned into a 7-car pileup). Otherwise, I'd probably still own it. I loved that car!!!!!

How does one choose the favorite among the children?

First car was innocent looking red 63-1/2 Ford Fairlane with 289 High Performance Mustang engine (11 to 1 compression). 271 horsepower factory before mods, solid lifters (which I adjusted every Saturday for optimal street dragging performance),
3 speed on column which I put a Hurst shifter on floor. Added aluminum high rise manifold and cut outs and Holley quad carb from Corvette. It could keep up with you 442 guys and vettes!

Traded it on 66 Corvette Stingray 427/390. Silver with silver interior. 4 speed. Good thing I played in a rock band to pay for it. All the girls in Jr. College liked me until I sold it!
Later there was the 63 Corvette Stingray split window coupe. Black with red interior. 327. Was in college and had to sell it because I couldn't afford to fix the bad rear end. Got $1,000. for it. (Yeah, check today's prices!)
Then there was the 58 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud I. Oh, gee!

For you British car enthusiasts, there was a great show for them in Pensacola last weekend. Over a hundred cars of all types. Great fun viewing them. Brought back wonderful memories. Always wanted a TR-6 for some reason. They had a live Beatles tribute band playing. Really nice day!
