Uncomfortable Bed
Has anyone had the problem with a king size bed having a hump down the center and solved the problem? I know this is a common problem with kings, but we are ready to sell our bed and get another mattress even though ours is only 8 months old!:cryin2:

The warantee is 10 years. Check the warantee on yours. |
We bought a top of the line Sterns & Foster pillow top king from Mattress Barn about a year ago. In no time we had a hump in the middle. Always had king mattress and this never happened. This is our first pillow top. Must be the pillow top. I don't want to say how expensive this mattress was, but I think it's time we call them.

We had the EXACT same problem with a Serta, Vera Wang model mattress from Showcase Direct. If you contact them they will have an independent technician come out and measure the sag. If not within tolerance they will issue a credit for the amount you paid, 100%. Mattress must have all original tags ATTACHED. Ours took 3 visits before the sag was enough to meet the specs.

Further to our above posted reply...ours was also a pillow top.

Our Beautyrest mattress, K-sized, is almost five years old and has no sag whatsoever. It is not a pillowtop, it's called a plush or something similar.
|
We had the same problem when we owned our pillow top mattress. When we decided to get a new mattress we went with the Tempurpedic with a 20 yr. warranty and LOVE it!!

This may not be helpful even in the short term, but if it can't be exchanged, have you tried rotating it a quarter turn? Of course then you will be sleeping with a lump across your mid section. Sigh.
I too, am less than enamored with the (3) different mattresses we have tried since we have been here. Our next step will hopefully be a thick temperpedic- type mattress topper on the very expensive wet sandbag of a bed we now have. I am close to having my hubby in agreement..... as they don't make them for half the bed. Even egg crate foam isn't making it. Cold that be why I'm getting bags under my eyes? No, wait. I'm a senior. |

Can a memory foam topper be put on top of a pillow top mattress? . |
I also regret my pillow-top decision from Showcase Direct. Their guy came out with his measuring equipment because of the sag, but it didn't sag quite enough to meet their requirement for a return. Bah.
I turn the thing every so often and the valley doesn't bother me comfort-wise, but it does strike me as being flimsy and shoddy that a mattress would develop a large depression after only a few weeks. And the stupid things can cost $1K or more! My next mattress will be from Sam's Club, no frills and definitely no pillow top. |
Here's an idea to consider - a soft side water bed with dual matresses, covered by a memory foam topper. The water mattresses are enclosed in a zip-up quilted matress covering. You can adjust the fill levels to suit your needs. Land and Sky makes that type of mattress.

Sleep Number
We used to have the types of mattresses you all are talking about with the same problems.About 12 years ago my chiropractor recommended we check out the sleep number bed and we have had one since. We don't understand why anyone would continue to spend money on mattresses that eventually break down or your need for more or less support changes. The sleep number adjusts to your needs!
|
Does anyone have a pillow top that does not have this problem?
|
Had a soft sided water bed for almost 20 years. Hubby decided he wanted to try a regular type mattress, so we went for the way too expensive Stearns & Foster pillow top. Sagged terribly after a few months and we did the regular turning and flipping required. Warranty gave us a brand new mattress and a few months later sag again. We sold the Stearns & Foster for a song and went out and bought another soft sided waterbed. Now 10 years later, we are still so happy with it. I seriously doubt we will ever go back to a regular mattress, but if we had to, I think we'd check into the sleep number beds.

You can get a foam pad at Sams for $100 and will really correct the problem. We got a knock off of a therapetic bed and absolutely love it.
|
I don't care what material a pillow top is stuffed with, it will pack down where you sleep. We sleep on Sleep Number but I think the best choice for a conventional mattress would be non-pillow top and you can add your own topper such as memory foam and replace as needed!
|
I have had a sleep number bed for over 15 years and my back problem went away when I first used it. If any of the foam part sag or deteriorate you can replace just what went bad. If the side rails lose their shape from sitting on the sides, you just change those out. You pump them up to whatever is comfortable for you and it can be different for the person next to you.

Had the same problem with our king mattress (very expensive). Like the comment above said, go to Sam's club and buy the memory foam topper for $129. We bought one two months ago and yes, it will fit on top of a pillow top mattress. We love it and it solved our problem. Good news - if you don't like it or if you are dissatisfied with the memory foam, Sam's will take it back without a hassle. Try it, you'll like it....

Of course if you do decide to replace the mattress, you will love a Sleep Number bed!

We just moved here a month ago....after researching we decided to try the foam mattress from Sam's Club called Night Therapy Elite with the gel cooling layer. We ordered it online and it came in a few days, in a large box. It has to air out a bit, the foam stinks at first, but it is very comfortable so far. We brought our box spring to put the new mattress on. It was strange to buy something only based on reviews, no way to try it out, but we are happy and it was about $500 for the queen, much less than the temperpedic.
|
I can remember, when they used to sell mattresses, that you turn over each time, besides just turning a half of turn!! How important is a boxspring? (or new one when purchasing a new mattress) We purchased king size, i Comfort "Serta Genius" Cool Gel Foam, (Extra Firm) at Mattress Firm 1 1/2 years ago. We kept our old box spring. We too have hump in middle, and after being in bed a while, foam area gets warm (at least seems like it). Cost 1799! I too have been thinking of buying foam topper to see if it helps. I wonder if Serta sells one, for just this problem. We didn't go for the Temper Pudic, because it was another grand more, for what we thought felt the same. Maybe we second guessed ourselves. Sounds like the topper is the way to go?
|
Temperpedic is a great mattress. Expensive, but in my mind, well worth the money since a good nights rest, every night, is priceless. It does smell funny for a few days, and can be a bit warm (I guess it retains the heat from your body) but I love it. Four years and no problems.
