Plastic Flowers in the front yard

There are a few houses on my street adorned with plastic flowers. We're not allowed to put up statues and such so I wonder if this is allowed. I believe they were put there with the best of intentions, to cheer things up, but they strike me as being a bit tacky.

What do you think about plastic flowers being put out in a front yard? Are you for or against?

Happinow 06-04-2013 08:11 PM

To each their own

With all of the wonderful real flowers out there why would one want plastic flowers? I think they are tacky and my guess is that they may not be allowed, but you may want to ask someone with some authority about that.

bkcunningham1 06-04-2013 08:16 PM

Like anything else, plastic flowers are only tacky if they are in someone else's yard.

gerryann 06-04-2013 08:17 PM

I think they're funny and if someone enjoys them...so be it.

DougB 06-04-2013 08:34 PM

I think they look beautiful........ on your street

travelguy 06-04-2013 08:35 PM

with all of the plants and flowers that are so easy to grow here in florida i find it so odd that anyone would put artificial plants in the landscape.
(pull them out under cover of darkness)...!

Skybo 06-04-2013 08:43 PM

Plastic flowers in pots on their porch? Plastic flowers in their flower beds? How do you know they are plastic? Did you trespass onto their property to find out? Why do you care? Seriously, why do you care?

....no to plastic.....much prefer the SILK ones..

There are some lovely Silk flowers in our 'hood.
Since the person is no longer able to tend to real flowers...
...they have silk ones arranged nicely.

Says it brings back memories of days past...
...when they had a lovely yard and could tend to it.

I am not going to turn them in...("live and let live")
...their "Silks" look much better than some flower beds.

Another plus...theirs need much less watering.

jimmemac 06-04-2013 10:33 PM

I hate plastic flowers they look stupid anywhere but outside they look absurd! I would offer to plant real ones if they were on my street-heck I would even weed them!!!

Phanatic Luvr 06-04-2013 10:51 PM

Here's a thought ...
I never thought much about it before my neighbors left to go up north for the summer but they placed silk flowers in their two large pots in front of the garage. Very colorful and festive. My guess is, after last years real flowers only made it for about two weeks, they decided to add some color with silk/plastic ones until they get back. There's more things for me to care about than someone elses fake flowers. I see so many tacky things in all neighborhoods. All in all, The Villagers keep their properties in great condition compared to other areas.

mainlander 06-04-2013 11:02 PM

Plastic flowers are best kept in the back yard, your neighbour's back yard. In my opinion.

Russ_Boston 06-05-2013 06:26 AM

I can only imagine that most 'silk' flowers are actually some sort of chemical material? I don't think they are real silk due to costs. But I know what you mean and they do look nice. Wouldn't want to see a whole yard of them but on walkways they may have a place.

salpal 06-05-2013 06:30 AM

tacky

asianthree 06-05-2013 06:36 AM

I have two wave petunias plant about four feet long hanging on the side of my house...every neighbor always comments how do they stay so pretty up north in this cold...yep they are silk custom made. Over $100 each tacky they are not

Parker 06-05-2013 06:40 AM

IF they look nice, live and let live.

travelguy 06-05-2013 07:01 AM

used to have a neighbor up in pennsylvania; always got a big charge out of her plastic flowers and vines as she had the first daffodils on the block (early february) and her poinsettias would poke their red heads out of the snowbanks. and they were extremely tacky (of course so were the frozen long johns hanging on the clothesline in january!)

nitehawk 06-05-2013 07:14 AM

almost a dumb as some of the golf carts i see with sticker all over them - with the two lovers name on each side (why is the male name on the drivers side ) and i almost forgot about the sticker on the mailboxes --- so i will continue to put fake flowers in my front yard -- it my right just like sticker and decals --- or as a kool-aider would say lets see the good in all thinks - so enjoy

graciegirl 06-05-2013 08:40 AM

I do not like artificial flowers stuck in a verdant, luscious, remarkably easy to grow real flowers place. They always look a little fake. It is kinda like a toupee. I prefer a real bald head on a fella.

Some folks like those plywood bending over ladies but I don't.

But if we all liked the same thing, they would only sell vanilla ice cream.

I think fake flowers are against the rules south of 466.

Some silks are really beautiful. I am sure yours are lovely.

PRIOR to The Villages....
We were also guilty... all around the inside of pool fence we had arrangements of silk flowers.

Also, a friend had lots of custom made silk flowers ALL around their yard.
The local Garden Club did a magazine write up, complete with photos,
featuring their grounds. The article also explained how lovely the flowers were...
complete with naming the varieties of their lovely flowers ...
...YUP...all their flowers were silk.

...again......YES to the silk flowers....Nay to to plastic ones.

gocubsgo 06-05-2013 09:40 AM

I wouldn't call to report these people unless they are out watering them...then it's a different phone call!!

Most are poly rayon but lets not get stuck in the details. Most people can't tell really good quality "silk" (fabric) flowers from real unless they touch them. The really expensive ones are made on real twigs or coconut fiber covered wire and do look beautiful. However they will I would think fade in the Fla sun. Even if easy to grow you can't tend flower beds if you aren't there and doesn't about half of town leave about now.

Only mentioned it because some said they were not plastic they were silk, as a way of justification.

PaPaLarry 06-05-2013 06:40 PM

Just think?? No fertilizer and they hold their color for a long time.

Where's the fun in that?

queasy27 06-06-2013 04:45 AM

The convenants aren't as strict in the historic district, so there are a goodish number of yards with faux plantings of one sort or another, along with wooden windmills, birdbaths, fiberglass sculptures, etc. It's all part of the charm, IMO.

When I lived over there, I put one of those big plastic pumpkins over my lamppost light one Halloween. I got a kick out of the way it looked lit up at night and it made it easy to find my house, so I left it there. For months. And months. Finally the enforcement truck came by and left a notice on my door, which I tossed. The second time they came by, I kindly showed them my conventant, which does not prohibit or restrict seasonal or lawn ornaments in any way, thank you very much to whoever called it in.

I left Mr. Pumpkin resolutely up for a couple more months until right before the next Halloween. :-)

I know what a gardener you are.

Things...flowers grow beautifully here until it gets too hot or too cool for them. If you follow the example of the flowers planted in the common areas, you will have a pretty flower garden, they do need changed out as each season presents itself...annuals that is. But some perennials will bloom every year in their season and some yards have something pretty blooming without much effort all of the time.

I find that "Vinca's" really do well here in The Villages, and they really take the heat very well. Plus even though they are annuals, they come up every year or new shoots come up each year.

best post in the thread! :)

Everything in moderation I say---including flowers---so called silk or real ones. A few weeks ago I passed by a nice new designer home that must have 15 or 20 hanging baskets and a number of potted ones of various flowers in the front yard and up and down the driveway. Not moderation and IMHO tacky. Lucky not my neighborhood.

marianne237 06-06-2013 07:32 PM

All in the eye of the beholder I say.

A phone call to Deed Compliance, and they will be gone in a week

Lawn ornaments are definitely not allowed, but really who cares. I wouldn't rat anyone out unless they had a real eyesore, like a rusty old car stored on their front lawn.

an 85 year old putting a flower in a pot that she does not have to take care of everyday and can sit on her lanai and see the color, would never bother me, but that's me

I am not the OP but it is usually easy to spot plastic flowers because they are faded or unnatural looking. I have used them before and if carefully chosen and replaced often, they look real and no one realizes they are artifical. Why would I care? i would care for the same reason that I would not like a purple house or pink flamingos. They are tacky.

Beautifully said...and I suppose that is so of personal adornment like tattoos and piercings and half mast britches.

I am truly getting old. Some things make me want to cry out.
