How do I find my router password?
 

I just got a "Smart TV" that's smarter than me. In order to set it up for the "Smart" features I need to enter my personal wireless router password. Of course I never wrote it down. Is it hidden in my computer somewhere? I have Windows Vista and I have searched the Control Panel but can't find anything that leads to "router password." Please help, this is driving me nuts! :Screen_of_Death:

P.S. My key for the letter P came off. Is it repairable? :cry:

I don't alot aboutr routers...but I think it a number on the router box itself. I had to find it to hook up my nook reader. Maybe you can try it and see if that works.

Are you sure you set a new password and not used the default password. Have you looked in the manual for the router? What make and model router do you have?

A lot of times the default is: admin.

That's what I remember. With no password

Assuming you never changed the default password from the original factory settings, look at the router and determine the make and model and then go to:

Default Router Passwords - The internets most comprehensive router password database

This site will give you the default "username" and "password."

If you did change the password and username then you'll have to reset the router to factory settings and use the information from the above site. There will be a reset button on the router.

Yes, if the router is supplied by your provider - say Comcast - the password maybe on the router.

I did a "live chat" with Linksys. She told me to enter their IP address in that box in my browser (IE) and a login window would come up but for some reason something in my computer security is blocking it. The first dozen times I entered it a bunch of tech-help websites came up like when you do a Google search. All the articles had Linksys' IP address as part of the name of the articles. After a while I tried it again and the IE error page came up saying it wasn't a valid host name. So I guess I'll try the reset button on the router. It's 3.5 yrs old so I don't have any manual or anything. It's a Linksys Wireless-N Router, model# WRT160N V2.

Can someone try to enter the IP address (192.168.1.1) in your browser window & see if a login page comes up? I can't reset the password if I can't get the router setup login page. Thanks!

Could it be that you need the Passphrase, which is 8 or more characters long (I use 13 characters) for the Smart TV to start communicating through the network, rather than the admin/password combo which is used to access the router manager? Of course you would still need the admin/password to access the router manager in order to find out what was entered for the passphrase during the original router setup.

If you have a NetGear Router you should be able to access the router manager by typing 192.168.1.1 in your address bar. I don't know how to access the manager on any other brand than NetGear. Good luck!

BTW, on your P.S: if you still have it, it usually just presses back on. Carefully center it and press firmly until you hear a slight snap. Some are tricky, some are not. Now if you actually lost it physically and can't find it, try looking in Lake Sumter. Oh wait a second... there is no P in Lake Sumter. Never mind!!! :1rotfl:

I didn't see this post when I make my post. The 192.168.1.1 address is the same for my NetGear router as well as for your Linksys. Have you tried a different browser or tried closing your browser and clear your temporary files then try again? If it doesn't work then you just might need to get in touch with your security software company or Linksys support again. I still think you might be looking for the passphrase, but will need to get logged on to the manager first. Hi, not sure if you have Direct TV, but when I get "no signal" I press the power button on the top of the remote and the TV box comes back on. Sometimes mine gets turned off by accident. Hope you figure all of this out I know how frustrating it can be. When it happened to me I bought a new router and started from scratch. Good luck!

Make sure you enter the "192.168.1.1” into the URL box NOT the search box.

The URL box is the main box at the top of the browser that normally shows the address of the web site you are surfing.

This should bring up a screen to get you into the router, then (provided you haven't changed the entry passwords) do not enter anything into the username box and enter "admin" (lower case) into the password box.

Then you should be into the router firmware/setup screens.

Here you will see your home network name - you'll need this for your TV setup.

Then go to the "Wireless" tab, and then "Wireless security" and you'll see your network password - my Linksys shows it under a box called "WPA Shared Key."

The password you need (for accessing the home network) should be different from the one you use to get into the router firmware.

Leave username blank & in password use admin

If it helps, I enter 10.0.0.1 as the URL address to access my router/network info.

I remembered that I took some notes when the guy from the computer store set my laptop up. After much searching of drawers I found the notepad and there it was, my HP password & below it my wireless password. Got the tv going (I had accidentally pressed an input key on the new remote which changed the source from HDMI to TV). Now everything is working.

I also realized what I was doing wrong in the URL box--I was typing it with a www. I tried just the numbers & it worked. However, when I leave the username blank & put "admin" for the password as the Linksys support person instructed me, it won't work. So I sent an email to their support. I don't really need to fool with it anymore but I'm tenacious & want to complete the task.

Skyguy, loved your joke. The key will not snap back on. I don't know if it was glued on or what. I'll check with the computer store on Monday.

This is not correct - many Linksys routers (in a default state) have no entry for the user name and "admin" for the password.

Of course whoever set the system up may have changed/added the username, password or both.

Do you already have a device connected to the network in question? Specifically a Windows device? If you do.. your in luck!! Windows offers a nifty little-known way to recover the password of any network your connecting to.

1. Sit down in front of a computer that is already connected to the mystery network. You should see a little Signal bar icon at the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

2. What happens next, will vary depending on what version of windows that you are using. But generally speaking, you should see a list of networks, including the network that you are currently connected to.

Find the network that you are connected to, and RIGHT click on it.

3. After you right click on it, you will see a menu, which provides you advanced options of what to do with that network. Once again, what this menu says will vary based on which version of Windows you have. But generally speaking look for 'Properties', or in the case of our Windows 8 computer, look for 'View Connection Properties'. LEFT CLICK 'View Connections Properties'.

4. Welcome to the Connection Properties Window. This Window will tell you many things about your connection.. however for the sake of this tutorial, most of those don't matter. Look for the 'Security Tab' and click that.

5. This tab will be the key to your success in recovering your lost Wireless Password. You will see an item called 'Network Security Key' and next to that will be a box with encrypted text in it. Under that, conveniently, you will see text that reads 'Show Characters' Click the check box!

6. And just like that, you've recovered your password!!! Write this password down exactly as you read it, and you can now use this with any other device that you want to connect to the network!

When you're finished, click cancel, to cancel any changes, and go about your life happy and content that you now can add devices as your see fit to your network.

I responded to this the other day to acknowledge that you were right, but I think that I forgot to publish after reviewing my post. Anyway, I checked the user guide for the Linksys and it stated exactly what you stated on the first page of chapter 3. Unfortunately, I had mistakenly given the information for my NetGear router believing it was the same as Linksys. Thanks for the correction!
