WalMart selling garbage
Yesterday I was doing some shopping at 441 WalMart and one of the items on my shopping list was a cantaloupe. For the second time in a month, as I looked thru the large box of melons, I found at least half on the verge of rotting. At times when I picked up a melon, my fingers would break thru the rind and into the melon. Really nasty I must say!!! This same thing happened a few weeks back, I complained to the manager who said he would talk to the produce person. It so happened that the following day I was back at the 441 WalMart and you guessed it, the same box, same rotten melons were still for sale. Folks, these cantaloupes were actually at the point of being garbage and should be below the standards of even WalMart.

I noticed that also. I very seldom buy fruits or vegetables there. Overpriced and on the verge of being moldy.
I now go to the Produce stands at Spanish Springs or Brownwood. Publix and Winn-Dixie are too expensive but Aldi's is great if you pick thru it and get the best product but they also tend to be over ripe and near rotting. |
We never buy produce or meat at Walmart it just never looks fresh to me. I agree Aldi's is a good place to get produce if you pick and choose to make sure you get the best they have.

I have my hands palms up and doing a poor imitation of a scale saying "Geez Louise""Boy Howdy" "Geez.......:clap2:

Best produce is at Fresh Market. More expensive but lasts longer and tastes better.

I bought a small watermelon at Walmart on 441 (Third World Walmart we call it...it's gross, but close) and it appeared healthy on the outside. Apparently is was VERY rotten on the inside and overnight it cracked on my counter and began to leak. The smell was HORRIBLE and it took weeks to get it out of my counter and floor!

Golly neds and boy howdy. Everyone knows Walmart doesn't have the best produce. BUT their staples are cheaper. Just go to Publix for the produce or wherever you prefer.
We do not need to have a political commentary on this. Many people are on fixed incomes here. If they shop thrifty, good for them. |
Well put graciegirl, I agree wholeheartedly!

Not a Walmart fan.
Never buy produce or meat from them. |
Walmart: I think it depends a lot on the local manager. We have obvious differences in the ones here locally. They do buy fruits and veges locally if possible and maybe that's the problem there, that they're not locally produced. The one I use here is very good.
My ladyfriend calls the one she shops at Hellmart! She likes the one where I shop. |
Some of Walmart's quality (or lack of) is not limited to your area. In Alaska we have noticed the same observations about produce and meat. Needless to say we go elsewhere. We have a Kroger owned store that offers much better in the area. I understand your Publix is a good place to shop?

I think the key is taking the time to examine produce carefully before buying. Who hasn't grabbed something quickly, and found soft spots when groceries were unpacked at home? Yuk.

I worked in a supermarket (many moons ago) in H. S. and college during the summers---Mostly worked in produce. You wouldn't believe how much went out the back door. Lots of waste! The quality absolutely depends on the produce manager. I worked under good and bad---store manager fired one guy because he didn't do his job, as a matter of fact, I might had something to do with it! Sometimes you get poor produce from the wholesale people. I was always told that "we don't make anything off our produce but liked to break even.".

I've heard that the more expensive stores, like Fresh Market, have buyers that go to the Terminal daily and get first choice of produce and pay a bit more. And that buyers for the discount stores get what is left, and pay a bit less. I have no idea if that is true. Probably another unfounded canard. :throwtomatoes: |
Why not look on the melons or whatever produce you buy to see what country they are from? All are labeled.
