Thai Ruby
The Thai Ruby food is only OK, very bland and when asked why..the reply, we cater to the Villages likes. Also the service is super slow, nice people, very polite, etc but the food is a huge let-down.
Disappointed. |
I agree that the food is only okay but the service and atmosphere is great. Here and at other ethnic eateries, you can ask for extra spicy and they will accommodate.
|
We like the place a lot, have brought many friends they liked as well.
They will cook to order almost anything you like. Also try the Asian Bistro by Target mall on 441 |
We have only had excellent meals there.

Thai Ruby is an excellent restaurant. True, the food is pretty bland IF you do not ask for it to be made spicier. I always ask for mine "medium hot" and it is perfect. Never, never ask for "Thai hot" unless you have a cast iron tongue, throat, stomach, and further regions.:evil6:
Nice atmosphere in the restaurant, nice service, and decent prices. You can carry on conversations easily without competing with background noise. |

We eat out quite often and we are repeat diners at Thai Ruby. Nothing outstanding but an all around nice place to dine.
|
Thai Ruby is a favorite of ours. In my opinion it has been very consistent with quality, service and price since opening. LOVE their Curry Chicken.

Love Thai Ruby. Everything is fresh and steaming hot when served. The Tom Kai soup is excellent.
|
We've been eating there on a regular basis since our lifestyle preview visit almost 4 years ago and consider it our favorite restaurant. The service is great, food very tasty and it's the quietest atmosphere in the Villages.

WE just ate there last week to celebrate Jenny's promotion. The food was OK. I didn't like the appetizers very much. Jenny loves crab rangoon and it was not very good.Over cooked or something. The batter was very hard. Same with the fried wonton, egg rolls and spring rolls. All were a dark brown color, not the light tan I expect to see in that type of food.
The pad thai was not bad. I've had a lot better and the stir fried pork dish was just ok as well. It was almost empty when we went and the service was very good. The people were smiling and the food came out in a reasonable time. They came back and refilled our water several times. I did have to wave at the waiter to come and pick up my credit card after he dropped off the check. I'll never understand why they wait so long to come back for certain things. He left the check, I pulled my credit card out of my wallet and stuck it in the little folder. He was then engrossed in a conversation with one of the female employees. He was facing me, but when I signaled him he didn't seem to see me. I waved again several times. Finally I half stood up and waved my arms and he saw me. It was a small thing and overall I'd say the the food and the experience were OK. Better than most in the Villages where I find the food to be not very good and the service very slow. |
I have always had good meals there. I love the fried rice with pineapple and raisins!
I can tell you that Bamboo Bistro has a new chef and it wasn't very good the last time we ate there. He changed up the recipes and not for the better. |
Did you speak to the owner, she's usually there.
When did the chef change? |
Most Thai restaurants in the US tone down the spices in their food to satisfy American taste. I usually ask for medium hot and get exactly what I ordered.

I don't recall ever having Thai food before, but thanks to this thread we decided to try it for dinner yesterday. We did not go there but rather ordered through The Villages Dining Delivery. Not being familiar with the food, I specified that we want anything we ordered prepared mild. Don't care for real spicy food. I have to say I was more than surprised and pleased with what we ordered. That included:
Thai Ruby SamplerWe intentionally ordered more food than we normally would so we could experience a wider range of the food. Besides we figured there would be enough for a second meal, but... wrong! The portions were so generous that there is enough left over for more than two meals! I plan on definitely ordering from there again, especially the Combination Fried Rice. For my taste and it's contents, it was at least equal to the best I've ever had! For anyone interested, here is the link for their menu: Thai Ruby menu - Lady Lake, FL 32162 - (352) 205-8288 |
We always eat here at least twice a visit. We love it. Staff are super friendly !
|
We love the atmosphere and service, but the food we found to be mediocre Thai. It has been very bland. We may give it another try and ask for medium spicy. Our favorite Thai restaurant is in Orlando, near Millenia Mall - NaraDeva.

I posted the original opinion on Thai Ruby and again the replies are mixed and the last reply pretty much goes along with opinion.
Nothing has changed at this restaurant, the meals are as bland and uninteresting as ever. The atmosphere is nice, the staff try hard, " But " going out to dinner should be and expected to be a pleasant experience not a regret. Again some establishments have their loyal followers and no matter what they will return regardless. I happen to be a huge fan of Thai food and this restaurant does not even come remotely close to Thai Cuisine. |
If you ask for the food to be prepared "medium hot" or " hot", you will not be calling it bland. You could always ask for " Thai Hot" but that is super-hot.
The coconut ice cream over the hot sticky rice is a perfect way to end the meal. |
Here is some information on Thai food. Asking for Medium Hot or Hot or whatever is not Thai food. It is all about blending various spices to a variety of dishes.
To ask for this is basically what I am trying to get thru to those who believe this is " Thai " food...it is not and not even close. To ask for M/Hot...or Hot is off the charts and the sad part the owners know this..however as I correctly stated they cater to the Villages (In there opinion). Thai Ruby has their faithful followers which is good, but to go there thinking for a second that you will be getting Thai food is a real Stretch . |
We really like it
We have eaten there a few times and really like the food and find it a very nice place to eat.

Some of the reviewers of NaraDeva were nonplussed by the food and liked other Thai restaurants in Orlando much more. Bottom line regarding food flavoring is that it all boils down to individual tastes. Bon Appetit! |
If a given market is large and diverse enough, a restaurant could specialize in "green hotdogs" and thrive. However, in a niche market, restaurants quickly learn that even ethnic recipes must appeal to the masses if they want to survive.
