The male ego....
Can anyone tell me why men have to play the black tees when they only hit the ball to the ladies tees???? On more than one occasion, we have been behind four male golfers who hit from the black tees. It is clear that they should be playing on the forward tees. Playing a par 4 is painful when they hit from the black. Just hit forward so we don't have to watch you struggle and hold up the game. It must be a male ego thing.....

Hate to admit it but you are probably right.
My group plays from the white (#4) tees down here in our local CC. Always amazes me when I see guys hitting from the 3's or even 2's and don't even hit it 150 yards. Yes, everyone has bad drives but when you watch them, every drive is bad. By bad, I mean no criticism of the length of their drive, just where they are playing from. Of course these are the same guys who take 5 minutes looking at a putt. If you can hit far then by all means play those tees but if not. . . TEE IT FORWARD! |
If a potential stroke per hole, is not a problem for them it certainly should not be for anybody else.

I believe Happi was primarily talking about the Exec courses, where you do get more inexperienced golfers. And, yes, quite often see golfers (mostly men) playing from the back/black tees whose swings/results would indicate that they should move up to at least the gold tees. To be fair, I have seen some women playing from the gold tees who would do much better from the forward/green tees.
I would hope it's less of a problem on the championship courses where golfers tend to be more experienced. The "after 5" crowd may be the exception. |
As long as they pick their ball up after a reasonable amount of strokes(6/par3, 8/par4, 9/par5)they should be fine.

"Playing white is like wearing a skirt"
It is a matter of course for me to watch from my home viewing from the friendly tee of a par 4 hole on a championship course:
Men hitting balls from all but the friendly tee into my birdcage or yard and into neighbors' on both sides. This is not rare, it happens several times a day from white, blue and black. What is extremely rare is for the ball to be left out of bounds, no matter if it's 20 feet up on the lawn. On the other hand, women on women's and friendly tees help each other by fetching botched shots. Friends bring the ball back and the girlfriend tries again. I wish the guys would do this but they suffer the effects of testosterone poisoning. :icon_wink: this article says teeing from white feels like wearing a skirt. Colorblind? |

Many feel the number one problem with golf is slow play. Men not playing the correct tees for their ability level is a definite cause (testosterone poisoning?). Women playing more strokes than double par is another cause (estrogen poisoning?). There are other causes, but rather than accusing either sex, we should all strive to do what must be done to maintain pace of play.

I'm not a golfer...yet...but isn't that the rule? Men and women T from different spots? There are men's T and women's T areas...right? It's like getting another handicap if you get to pick. You couldn't compare scores accurately if one man used a T much closer than the other. It's that way to "equalize" the women and elderly with the men who are usually much better. It's the only way to compare men accurately. All have to use the same T.

whoa. news flash. four golfers (two couples), champion course, 4 par hole, white tee. one man went in the neighbor's yard to get his ball just past friendly, one woman picked her ball up from just past the friendly tee and they drove with it in the cart to the green. dang. I don't have the video camera yet.

Actually, it is very possible to play a match where people use different tees. Handicaps are computed to create an "index" which is used to determine your handicap for a specific set of tees on each course. So I can play a set of tees and use my handicap for those tees and you can do the same for a different set. |
Mike, I just don't see that happening. are you a visionary? I see people collecting in a cart and trying to all play the same tee mostly. exceptions are all women or a lone couple.

Only some men...

So while you are correct in your assessment of "some" men you neglect to mention the women who have their own issues. In this case it's not "ego", but lack of consideration for those around them. We wouldn't want to appear sexist would we? :-) |

I'm over my head talking about golf...still it's refreshing to know that you are among those who play from where you are likely to do well and not make nutty shots.

However, I do frequently see people playing the wrong tees for their skill level. Both male and female, too. I'm not sure what fun that is. |

According to some recent statistics, there are actually fewer golfers today than five years ago. There are several reasons but two stand out. It's too expensive and it takes too long. The economy took its toll, especially among the middle class working families. When money is tight, golf and the C.C. Club are among the first things to go. Many just don't have the time for a five hour round of golf on weekends. When you add in travel time and a drink and lunch, your day is shot. That being said----little of this has to do with a retired resident of TV. However, slow play is frustrating. Two things can help. Use the proper tees and play ready golf. And this goes for both executive courses and Championship courses. Just learning ----go to good golf school ---- take some lessons prior to playing that first round of golf. A golf course is not the same as a practice range. Have fun but keep pace with the group in front. Fore!
|
Ready golf is almost non existent in T V. It is in the same category as turn signals which are not used by a majority here.
Keeping up with the group in front is normally not a problem as we find having to wait on most t boxes. One thing I do hate about golf and that is the arbitrary time to play 9 or 18. I have belonged to clubs in the past where they were obsessed with the 4 hour round......and that seemed to be the topic of every golf discussion....not for me. I play hole by hole and not by the clock. I would like to see a concerted effort here in TV promoting playing ready golf. I believe it has potential to improve the pace of play significantly. And there is more than enough time to put your clubs away while waiting for the next t box:icon_wink: btk |
Ready golf
I also think a factor for slower golf here is the age factor. None of us are getting any younger and perhaps do not move as fast as we use to. Also, we play golf in the evenings and sometimes that's when the beginner golfers play, people bring children on the course, and some walkers which all tend to slow down the game. There are times when we have encountered such slow play that we have left the course. But.......that's golf!!!
|
I think I'm an ok golfer and on the exec courses can usually shoot 4 or 5 over from the black tees. But when I play with some friends that are newer to the game than I am, and they say they want to play from the tips, I will tell them that my back has been bothering me and I would prefer playing from the gold tees. They usually look relieved to play from the golds, but no one wanted to suggest it first. So I think you're right and that it is a male ego thing. All that being said, with the heat index at around 105 every day, I walk a lot slower when I'm out there than I do in the cooler months!
|
I'm about a 5/6 hndcp. I play with a wonderful group and while some do know some rudimentary etiquette and a few rules they move at a brisk pace and pick up when it's taken to long. We base our speed on the group ahead. If the group ahead hasn't finished the next hole on our way to that tee then we're doing well.
Don't base a groups speed on anything, but their positioning in relation to every other group within sight of the holes you're playing. |
Just.............well said. Let's keep the bones moving around the course!!

When it comes to a lot of things, a lot of men have ego but this is especially true in golf. Some were good at other sports (in their day) basketball, baseball or football. Many of these same guys never played golf until later in life----well you get the picture. I read an article recently where it said that the average senior golfer (60 and over) should be playing from 5,500 yard tees. Of course there are exceptions and we have some very good golfers in TV who can handle the blues and black tees. Most of them are in their 50's or early 60's. But there are exceptions! Most guys over 70 like me have no business (or much fun) playing from the back tee boxes. On the PGA Champions Tour a golfer over age 60 has only won a couple of times in the last 30 years. That shows you how age makes a big difference---even with the pro golfers.
|
I moved to the white tees last year . My interest and attitude increased three fold. put that ego aside and have some fun!!
|
At 70 I play from the forward tees. I do not suffer from and delusions, LOL
