What have you heard about Selfridges, is there a second season? Also Inspector Lewis, is he coming back from retirement and Endeavour - we got three Endeavours and grew to enjoy them and then they were gone!

BritParrothead 08-20-2013 10:53 AM

downton etc

Mr Selfridge season 2 will debut in US in 2014

Lewis may still return to television in 2014, either as another series or as a one-off.

Endeavour is coming back for a second series. Did not watch, as did not fancy it!

Boudicca 08-20-2013 01:38 PM

I was absolutely hooked on DA. My great grandparents were servants in a grand house. Great grandmother was a cook, and her husband my (great grandpa) was chauffeur beginning with horses and carriage, then learned to drive cars. Their daughter, my grandmother, was a scullery maid, much like the long suffering girl reporting to DA's Daisy. My parents believed in the benefits of a good education, which broke the trend. Additionally I am thankful I grew up in America :)

Also keep an eye open for new Doc Martin series. Starts here next month, I think. Great entertainment!

cmfjr 08-21-2013 06:18 AM

Just checked PBS web site and they indicate season 4 will start Sunday, January 5th and will have 8 episodes ending Sunday, February 23rd!

Great news about Doc Martin. Is it going to be a continuation of the one we are still running, or a new series with a new story line?

By the way, once I got through the first episode of Endeavour (which was awful) the rest were really good, he is a good little actor and adopted some of the same mannerisms as John Thaw making it plausible that he was a young Morse.

By the way, PBS ran an episode of Masterpiece "The Lady Vanishes" Tuppance Middleton this past Sunday, the cast was superb with many of the old time British Stars, I even recognized the woman from the ancient Doris Day/James Stewart move "The Man Who Knew too Much" or Que Sera, Sera, but it was very difficult to follow. We had absolutely no idea what it was about and actually turned it off about half way through. Is this a series and hopefully it gets better?

Doc Martin

The trailers do look good!!

We had a really weird Doc Martin last night - it was the movie where he is a gyno in London and married, and the wife has been sleeping with all his friends and he leaves and goes off to Port Isaac. He looked about 21 years old. It was the oddest thing to watch, but better than no Doc Martin!

By the way, what do you think of Silk, we are having a hard time getting into it!

BritParrothead 09-02-2013 04:39 PM

Have not seen Silk, will look for it! Enjoy the new Doc Martin when it comes to you!
The actors daughter starts school with my friends daughter next week! Exciting times for the girls :)

Is Doc Marton a NEW season?

uujudy 09-03-2013 11:53 AM

Darling Son-in law sent me a BlueRay player with WiFi for my birthday, and we're over the moon happy watching streaming Netflix! ALL the wonderful British shows we love are on it, and we've been working our way through all 77 episodes of Midsomer Murders. We're up to season 10! :MOJE_whot:
I'm ready to cancel HBO and just watch Netflix.

Of course we have to turn on the captions to understand what they're saying, because those Brits don't speak English. :1rotfl:

Brand New and shiny!! Saw an interview, where Martin Clunes said he thought it might NOT be the last season after all!!:MOJE_whot::clap2:
He lives about 20 minute drive from us, in a lovely place called Bridport. If you ever get a drama called Broadchurch,(FAB) It was filmed here.

Yes, we are just beginning the Broadchurch shows, I think we are into number three, they are a bit dark though, I just hate the way the senior detective speaks to people, and his Scottish accent is very difficult to follow at times.

We recently had the show that Martin Clunes did where he traveled all through the outlying British Islands, incredible show and a great geography lesson for anglophiles.

BritParrothead 09-05-2013 08:04 AM

British Translation Table :) :)

WHAT THE BRITISH SAY
WHAT THE BRITISH MEAN
WHAT FOREIGNERS UNDERSTAND

I hear what you say
I disagree and do not want to discuss it further
He accepts my point of view

With the greatest respect
You are an idiot
He is listening to me

That's not bad
That's good
That's poor

That is a very brave proposal
You are insane
He thinks I have courage

Quite good
A bit disappointing
Quite good

I would suggest
Do it or be prepared to justify yourself
Think about the idea, but do what you like

Oh, incidentally/ by the way
The primary purpose of our discussion is
That is not very important

I was a bit disappointed that
I am annoyed that
It doesn't really matter

Very interesting
That is clearly nonsense
They are impressed

I'll bear it in mind
I've forgotten it already
They will probably do it

I'm sure it's my fault
It's your fault
Why do they think it was their fault?

You must come for dinner
It's not an invitation, I'm just being polite
I will get an invitation soon

I almost agree
I don't agree at all
He's not far from agreement

I only have a few minor comments
Please rewrite completely
He has found a few typos

Could we consider some other options
I don't like your idea
They have not yet decided

As you get further in to the series, his manner of speaking becomes clear. Can not tell you why, it will spoil it!
The martin Clunes, Islands was wonderful, he also does one about horses too.

Did you not realize that "Endeavor" was our beloved Inspector Morse as a young man? His mother named him Endeavor. He never forgave her. He never told anybody his first name.

BritParrothead 09-05-2013 09:28 AM

endeavour

oh I know who he is, just not a fan of the actor :) Do you know why he was named Endeavour? He was named after Capt Cooks ship, HMS Endeavour. His mother was a Quaker and all Quaker names have to be 'virtuous'
When I see John Thaw, the original Morse, I see his as the character Chief Inspector Regan from a '70's tv show, Sweeney. The best cop show ever shown on British television!!

Hahaha! Yep! Boy Howdy!
Thanks, BritParrothead!

jblum315 09-06-2013 11:11 AM

"The Lady Vanishes" is not a series. It is a TV remake of a 1938 Hitchcock movie. IMHO, the original was way better. Not very complicated. A young woman on a train is befriended by an older woman who then completely and mysteriously disappears.

New season Downton Abbey playing right now as we speak!! Will watch later, and report back :)

Madelaine Amee 09-22-2013 03:22 PM

I have been looking for the next installment of BroadChurch, but it has completely disappeared off our screens. No idea what happened to it, so no idea who killed the boy .. very annoying.

I watched it last night .......... I almost wish I had not .......... I was so disappointed to find out who did it. I guess I am a wimp, I prefer the British mysteries set in the Cotswolds where they used a dose of poison or something equally genteel. Oh well, life marches on and leaves me behind.

I just found out I have Downton Abbey on my Comcast On Demand. For whatever reason I never watched the show, but I have just stated at the very beginning. These rainy days have given me the opportunity to get through 5 episodes of season 1.....I'm hooked.

So....I think I'll just skip right over this thread, just in case of a spoiler regarding the first seasons, until I get caught up. Need more rain so I can hurry through them! LOL
