Bringing non-airconditioned car to FL?
 

We already have our main car with A/C in the Villages. We will be moving down there full-time soon. Our 2nd car (which is not used much but does come in handy on occasion) is a1993 Nissan pick-up with no air-conditioning. It runs great and has many more useful years. We do not want a golf-cart at this point.

Do any of you drive a car with no A/C in FL? Golf carts are not air conditioned but are wide open. The cab of the truck is small and with both windows open there is definitely a breeze.

It would be far less expensive to ship this truck than buy a new car/truck with A/C when we get there, just wondering how practical it is. Thanks for your input.

You won't be very comfortable driving it from June through October.

You can't compare a small truck to a golf cart regarding air because the truck engine produces a lot of heat (upwards of 180-200 degrees) to add to the atmosphere in the cab. It would work if you only use it in early mornings or after the sun goes down but then the humidity is awful. That applies all over the Gulf Coast.

Don't worry about it. It will be warm to be sure driving your truck, but just open the windows. Folks did it for years before they started putting air in vehicles. I wouldn't buy another vehicle just for the air.

Having a small truck is great, having a truck without air conditioning, isn't. While it wouldn't be much of a problem for a number of months, you might find it just too hot to use in the late spring, summer and early fall.

Just depends on your level of comfort required. If you are used to making do and adjusting as needed you will be fine. If you can't tolerate the temperature being a little on the warm side forget it...at least during the summer months..

You could try adding air for about $1200 in parts, plus labor.

I drive with my windows and sunroof open quite a bit. I do turn on the A/C when it's raining however.

But, and I cannot emphasize this enough. I would not be without a golf cart in the Villages.

Travel within the Villages is almost 100% by golf cart unless I have to carry a lot of stuff or the wife takes the cart and I am stuck with the car. We only use the car when we go off campus. In fact we will be buying a second golf cart very soon and I will have one of them modified so that I can carry all of my musical equipment on it.

You will melt in the summer. And, consider the fact that if you do decide to sell the vehicle, it will have much more value where you're at vs. here. I would think it would be much harder to sell here.

Do what the budget affords.

Did you say you already have one car here? We have one car and it works for us. But the air conditioning is very much appreciated in the summer. We aren't as young as we used to be.

OK, it's twenty years old. Has no resale value. Bring it down and just make do. If it's an extra car for occasional use it may last a long time. If it does not work out, then deal with it later.

Of course, you must also wear your hair shirt while driving it in summer... ;)

I would try it. If heat becomes a problem yon still have morning evening use.

Living in The Villages without a golf cart is like living without sunshine. A golf cart is much of the experience and is a necessity. You'll own one within three months.

Those of us who choose not to have a golf cart kind of lurk in the background and keep it quiet. At the risk of being lambasted... we've been here since late 2011, don't have a golf cart, don't want one. I like the safety of car doors and air bags. I like the a/c in the summer and heat when needed in the winter. We don't play golf.

I like the idea of spending the $1200 to a/c your truck if you get down here and can't take the heat. Maybe it won't bother you and you won't even have to spend that $.

When I lived in D.C. i had a hot 375 hp 396 Camaro convertible without AC, power steering or power brakes and got by just fine. One adjusts to the temperature and humidity wherever one resides - given time.

laceylady, I'm with CFrance on this. A cart came with our house but we'll often go 3-4 weeks without using it. We added seatbelts but it still feels a bit unsafe to me. My primary objection is the heat, though. I don't enjoy a hot, muggy outing, "breezy" or not.

Your comfort level is not mine, but I think a car without A/C would only be usable here maybe 18 weeks out of the year.

What about a golf cart makes folks feel unsafe'? There are many more car accidents then golf cart accidents.Jmo

bring the truck use it for a year if it doesn't work then sell it...how much do you need two cars? are you still working.

Unless you have a sentimental attachment to the truck, I would get rid of it. I notice you are from Washington state. I imagine it will cost you more than the truck is worth to ship it to TV. Although a truck would be a valuable asset quite often when you get to TV, there are thousands of us that don't have one and manage to survive. I know I missed my truck when I got rid of it several years ago, but I survived. It had AC, but that quit working about 5 years before I GAVE it away. We lived in Virginia and it was quite warm and humid there in the summer also. I got used to not having AC and if you decide to bring your truck, I'm sure you will adjust also. Just determine whether the truck is worth the cost to ship.

I was raised in Jax, Fl. and most of my cars never had A/C and I survived.

People drive golf carts and they are not air-conditioned so I do not know what the big deal is. Just leave the windows open when you drive.

When I am not with my wife I usually turn the A/C off and open the windows.

I miss having two cars ........... have one and a golf cart, the golf cart is great for golf, hate it for traveling even just around TV. I have to take the golf cart once in a while to get wherever, but never really feel safe in it - call it my plastic sardine can.

Trade your old car for a golf cart, you will never regret it.

You may be able to adjust to no A/C yourself, but you'd have a hard time selling it here.
