looking for home health aid?

Did the search, not much.
Need home care assistance for husband with Parkinson's Disease
and me, Caregiver's Disease with burnout.
Not necessarily nursing care, but help lifting, dressing, meal prep, exercising and fall prevention (hubs);
cleaning up after him, errands, honey do list, a nice meal once in while and just a general break sometimes (me).
What are the good agencies?
Thanks!

I thought it might be best to go through an agency? They've done training, background checks, have insurance etc. Thoughts?
Any feedback is much appreciated.

I miss seeing you, and I'm looking forward to seeing you in the Fall. I can't help with the assistance for your hubby, but I have a big hug waiting for you and lots of time to hang out. I'll send you the name of an excellent cleaning service.

Billyg 08-27-2013 09:29 PM

That feels like a big hug. Thanks!

There is a company advertising in the POA Bullein this month called Care Minders. They are licensed and bonded. You can find their information in the link provided in Warrens thread about the POA. I haven't used them but perhaps someone else can give them a recommendation.

Hope this helps ... See you in the Fall!

I just called Senior Home Companions because I need help with my mother. I will let you know in a few days how it is going. There also is Interim HealthCare and Grannie Nannies. Maybe someone on TOTV will give there recommendation.

TraceyMooreRN 08-29-2013 09:14 PM

Anyone know the going rate for care providers in the home. I have a loved one coming in the end of September I need to have 24 care for him for the first 3 weeks and then part-time after that---

TunaFish 08-30-2013 02:57 PM

Call Senior Home Companions, 352-874-7870. They have reasonable rates. It depends on the type of care you need and the hours you need them.

Bizdoc 08-30-2013 06:16 PM

Some of the assisted living facilities and congregate care facilities have respite care beds. And they won't criticize if you tell them the reason you need it is that you are going bat ****. Anyone who has cared for a chronically ill loved one has the same feeling of burnout.

See also Elder Options for our Area Agency on Aging. They can help with information, referrals, etc. Good people to get to know.

I work for a home care agency and we have worked with home instead quite a bit. They do amazing things for not only their patients but also for the community.

What a great name you picked for your business!

St Timothy's Catholic Church has a Respite Program for Caregivers. They can provide 3 hours of respite care per week for your loved one which allows you time to do your thing: shop, hair, nails, massage. Please call them so you get some 'down' time! DayBreak is another program which just moved to O'Dell Rec Center. Unfortunately there is a waiting list, but it is free and will free you for several hours a week.
Lastly, I know a qualified companion, she does charge - but is reasonable. Send me a pm and I will gladly share information - from 1 caregiver to another!

Maryj18 10-19-2013 10:29 AM

I am interested in your ad for a home health aide and l am a retired RN looking to work 16-20 hours a week in home health care - please pm me if interested

Another thought - check the weekly rec news for support groups. I believe there are 2 that support Parkinson patients. I have found that support groups have a wealth of knowledge and can assist the caregiver.

There is also a group called CarePlanners co-founded by Dr. Nancy Sneiderman of the Today Show. Apparently this developed when she needed help with a parent and she found there wasn't enough help out there fore the care-giver. You can Google CarePlanners and look into it. I get the feeling that they help you find the right agency or assistance but I'm not exactly sure.

I have two girls here that I found through word of mouth. They are EXCELLENT and look after my husband who has Advanced Parkinsons and is also recovering from six weeks of radiation therapy. They are great and pretty much do anything we need - including dealing with dog, cat. I'm very comfortable with them, they've been caregivers to others within the community and have excellent references.

SusanOfWoodbury 05-21-2014 12:33 AM

Billyg.

I am a licensed CNA and have worked for several agencies in the area, but, I would highly recommend Senior Home Companions. The owner of this company is Mary Hotopp, she lives in TV and has owned this company for approx. 15 years. All her help has gone through intensive back ground checks, finger printing...
She has CNA and home health workers
Her rates are reasonable compared to other companies and she pays her aides and CNA well...

Abster 05-21-2014 08:38 AM

One of my husband's caregiver's has been a CNA for the last ten years - plus. She's from England and has worked for several care agencies throughout Florida. Qualified CNA/Florida License. She's trustworthy, has references and will not only care for patient - including bathing and dressing but anything requested around the house. Her name is Teresa Toomer 352-408-2698. If she can't answer the phone at the moment, she will return the call ASAP. We are going home so she will be available anytime after June 20th. Teresa has been not only a wonderful caregiver, but great companion for me as well. I HATE leaving her behind but guess I have to share! I have another wonderful caregiver and will gladly share her name and number once I check with her. Good luck. We're lucky we got caregivers with common sense and fun personalities. Many can be VERY boring.
