Rain and Direct TV
 

Years ago, rain would really mess up my television picture. Has it improved in especially with the recent rain?

I've had maybe two disruptions with Directv this rainy season and my first in TV. Once I had to push the reset button. easy breezy.

If we have a serious storm - I lose my direct tv signal. This was why I hesitated switching from Comcast, but their prices just got out of sight. At least it shouldn't be an issue during the football dry season.

I have had Direct TV for 12 years. Occasionally with heavy cloud cover I would lose high definition reception. Most of the time if I switch to the to the channel that is not high def, the reception would restore. Sometimes, however I would lose both. It really takes heavy dark clouds to block the reception. This year with all the rain we have had, I have only lost reception 2 or 3 times and only for a short time.

We had direct TV for years and loved it so when we moved to TV we had it installed. After a yr of losing a signal nearly everyday during the rainy season we gave up and switched to Comcast. Granted the signal rarely was out for more than an hour but it just became too frustrating for my husband watching his ball games. After we got a couple of glitches fixed right after it was installed, Comcast has been trouble free with no interruptions

We love our Direct TV and are willing to overlook the outages during a heavy rain. Of course we do have a DVR and many times do not even know there is an interruption because we are watching a recorded show. Hubby loves to be able to watch his sports after the fact and skate right over the commercials. He is forever telling people not to tell him the score because he hasn't watched the game yet. I have found the service with Direct TV to be really good. We didn't have the same luck with Comcast.

With football season starting I can't accept any down time.

As someone mentioned earlier the storms usually affect the high def. The guy who installed ours set up our channels guide to have each channel show up twice. One in high def and one without. When the high def goes out switch to regular. This happened to us in May when the seasons' first tropical depression hit, Switched and never lost a beat.

I have Century Link Prism. It's not cable or satellite, it's fiber optic. Never goes out.

I have direct tv up north and comcast in the villages. Signals are lost with direct tv whenever we get any kind of storm. Cable is super reliable ane comparing apples to apples, no more expensive!

Do you lose internet too? We have Comcast and have never had a problem, but their rates are getting so high. We got an offer for Direct TV in the mail for $69.64 for the bundle (TV, Internet + phone). We are in the 2nd year of the Comcast promotion and the monthly rate has gone up to $150/mo.

We have internet thru Century Link and no, we do not lose a signal with weather. Different services - different feeds.

Short amswer..NO..Rain tonight and out again..don't bother using dtv..

I've got no problem here with dtv. suggest you may have a unique situation def worth calling about.

I don't know Kitty - I have had DTV twice and both times lost my signal when it rains. Actually it is more of the storm clouds, rather than the rain, that blocks the signal. Maybe that has something to do with it???

Had Direct Tv for 2 years. Liked it for the most part but when there were heavy rains it went out. When we're getting tornado warnings I like to see what's happening. When you need it most, it wasn't there. I went back to Comcast. It's worth the few extra bucks. Also like the Comcast on demand free tv shows and movies. Still got the stupid disk on my roof, though. They don't take it back.

How does Century Link Prism compare price wise to Comcast?

EXACTLY.... We live in a hurricane prone area and after living here over 60 years and experiencing many storms, I've got to tell you that you want to be able to watch the weather on TV. When storms approach, you will have squalls and feeder bands hundreds of miles before the actual storm and you don't want to lose your signal then. You might as well have a total power failure if you can't keep up with advisories.

Please, before you condemn Direct TV, just switch to the standard definition channels during a storm. Go to menu, settings, preferences, display, and choose to view all channels. Then the standard definition (non High Def) channel designations show up. They work fine for the duration of the high def outage. A half hour later, when the storm passes, just set the preferences to hide the SD duplicates.

We were at a restaurant with many TVs showing different sports when a huge downpour started. We thought we'd just settle in and watch the golf until the storm passed. The customers all groaned when all the TVs went black and the "Direct TV" logo bounced across all the screens. We actually had to talk to each other. Imagine! :22yikes:

OK, you missed a little golf, no big deal. What if it was an advisory on a killer hurricane approaching? Living in Fla nearly all my life I know that these storms are preceded by squalls and feeder bands hundreds of miles before the storms. The last thing I'd want to miss is weather advisories that to some may be to evacuate.

That is why you have a weather radio - cause the power can also go out then doesn't matter what you have for service. Also as long as you have internet you can get all the updates you need.

WE started with Directv this summer. Everyday that it has rained the picture has gone out...I was told outages were infrequent. In my experience it has been frustrating and irritating...the daily interruptions...I would NEVER recommend it to anyone!
