Advice where to put cat litter box in Designer
Hi,
This may seem to be a silly post but as you can see from my avitar we have 2 3 yr old kitties. We recently bought an aspen but haven't moved in yet. My cats are indoor cats and I've been trying to decide where to put their litter box so it will be out of the way and we don't smell it it the main living area's. We've thought about the laundry room but with the opening and closing of the garage which is close to the laundry room they could easily get out the door if someone happens to come in when there using the box. Any idea's would be helpful. Almost there......East New York, Queens, Floral park, Hicksville, Commack and soon The Villages !! |

boy, I'm glad I'm not the only one...tried the garage, kitty just uses the whole garage.
so am moving it to the lanai...today he went..nevermind, he just has to be a lanai kitty for awhile. |
Thanks for your idea's it makes sense, but still paranoid that they'll get out while I'm asleep.
I'm new to the idea of a "Lanai". My cats have their claws. I'm afraid they will stay on the lanai all night if I create the door for them, and when I wake up in the morning they will have clawed into the screen or worse yet found a way to get out. Is anyone else worried about that ? |
I shall be curious to hear more replies as we will be in the same situation soon. We have two Bengals (Asian Leopard Cats) and they are indoor too and we plan on a Designer home. I too considered the Laundry room so look forward to other possible ideas. We also have to find room for the 4 foot in diameter Cat Wheel!

Mom and I built an Iris for our cat's litter box, i planned to put the box in that niche off the laundry area. After reading these posts, I'm going to try the lanai first. I'd like to have a built-in desk in that niche.

This may sound strange but I know several who put the litter box (doesn't need a cover, just needs to be deep) in the bathtub. When you have guests, you have to move it but otherwise, just close the shower curtains when you have company. Just put a rug or plastic bag under the box, cover the drain, sit on the edge of the tub to clean. If you have a Litter Genie, no fuss, no muss, no smell.

I lived about 8 miles from Washington, DC for 26 years and had a lot of out of town company. I hated having the litter box in the bathroom. I also use clumping litter and I'm not sure how that would work out in the bathtub for my two girls. |
I watch a lot of cats. Most people place the litter pan in the master bathroom, under the counter, where one would put a stool.
If you place the pan out on the lanai, I guess you would have to install a kitty door also, since you wouldn't want to leave your lanai sliders open and suck out the A/C. Just a thought ... |
That is why we are considering the Iris. We do have an automatic litter box and it is great.
If we didn't get an iris we were going to put a cat door in a pantry cabinet in the laundry or perhaps just remove the bottom door. What can I say, cat lovers are just as passionate about their critters as are dog owners. We love both and when we had our german shepherd she and our siamese were best buds; they sleptmwith the siamese draped over the shepherds back! |

I have ours in the master bathroom under the counter where a stool would be placed. The other is in the spare bathroom but when we have company staying over
I place it in the master bathroom beside the counter near the door. We have two cats also. |
I have my dog bowl in the master bath where the roman shower entry is. My loving puppy has boxer loose lips and there's nowhere else for a 16 inch stainless bowl. Bonus: easy to clean up around it.

We have one in the laundry room ,and one in the master bathroom, toilet area. Yes, we have to watch the garage door, but only 1 seems interested, and she'll get over it. When we first moved she spent alot of time above the kitchen cabinets, which freaked me out, I don't allow (hahaha) them on the counters. I think that was just an adjustment thing, because she never goes up there anymore...now she is comfortable in her home and has picked her various spots to sleep comfortably.

Thank you so much for all your comments. I was thinking about the bathtub in the bathroom idea as well. They are currently trained not to come in the bedroom in the middle of the night as I am a very light sleeper so I don't want the litter box in the master bathroom. Where we are living now I have there litter box in the downstairs shower. I have found that the car mats are wonderful to place in front of the area where the cats step out from the liter box and the larger mat for under the liter box. The rubber is so smooth that it is a cinch to clean and sweep the liter until a small dust pan. I found this tip in a magazine and it works terrific.
Hope to be there in a month and would love to see those Bengals !! Future Villager ...... Oct. 2013 |
I have had my kitty litter in the spare bathtub for years. Easy to clean.

jnieman, yes I understand how a cat door works but I have seen a lot of people just leave their sliders open about 6" or so, to let their cat(s) go in and out.

We have my husbands wooden desk from his youth. We were going to move it into the laundry room and us the space where the chair went for the box. Then use the side drawers for storage and the top to sort laundry. But, sadly Ellie has passed on and will not get to join us on our final move from Ohio in January. She so loved the lanai on her previous visits and we are glad she had the chance and that we took photos of her lounging in the sun. Anyway, there are lots of these desks for sale now that folks have laptops....just a thought.
