Flat screen TV mounted in Lanai, any concerns?
 

Hi

We will be arriving at our new home in Collier next week. Our lanai faces northeast, attaches to a birdcage and we have a summer kitchen. We wired above the sink, between the exhaust hood and the house to mount a TV. Question:

I am told any TV is fine, no need for one designed to be outdoors. My research does not support this.
Would 3d be a "cool" option?
Should I be concerned about security issues? We back up to a pond and the Prairie.
Am I missing anything?

TV or not on lanai
 

Moved in during December 2012. First TV blew out last month. Too much humidity is my guess and it is always covered unless it is in use. It was 5 years old. The guy at Best Buy said the TV's made for outside are very expensive. He recommended buying cheap with the service plan and they will replace it if it goes during the plan period. I have not decided yet if I want to replace mine. Good luck.

We have one on the lanai on the sheltered wall. We have a big cover for it when it rains and blows.

I wouldn't even think about someone stealing it, but would be more concerned about the elements.

You see a lot of T.V.s on lanais around here from the main streets.

I'd like to have a mount for the tv that allows me to put it up for the big game and then take it back to the guest room. anybody got info on that?

me too..does a great job, and would have an honest answer..i will say they people next to us have it up so high we always know what program they are watching

Hook it up to a large sound system so your neighbors can hear it also.

Thanks for all the info. The gameplan will be a value set with possibly a service contract. Meeting with Tom when we arrive. In the interest of good neighbor relations, no external sound system :wave:

You'd be surprised how the sound carries on the lanai's, must be all that concrete amplifies the sound. Good neighbors wear headphones. :angel:

I'll do a sound check in their lanais. The house is an Ivy model and the summer kitchen, LR and MBR form a horseshoe so the sound should project out in to the Prairie.

I have met several people who have hired Tom. Everyone was more than satisfied with his end results and very happy with his prices. I watched him work in a home I was working in last week. I was amazed at how clean everything looked. Not just his final work, but the work area. He seems like a really nice man. I hope you are happy you called him. Keep us posted, please.

Our lanai TV has Bluetooth. We bought a Bluetooth speaker that we put in between us when we are watching it so we have the audio right near us and can keep the volume low enough so the neighbors can't hear it but we can. Works great.

Our TV had a problem while still under warranty. When the repairman took it apart to fix it, we could see some rusted metal components and he mentioned these TVs are not intended for outdoor use. So, I think going on the less expensive side is a good idea as long as it has the features you need. Ours also has wifi so we can get Netflix and others.

I keep deleting this but it's too wicked to keep to myself. I have bose speakers on the lanai with golfers going by in a parade. You got me thinking how loud that could be, and if I had a wireless microphone....I could have sooooo much fun...

It must be possible, haven't you seen all of those ATT wireless U-verse commercials where apparently it is easy to move 60 - 80 " tvs where ever you may want them. :laugh:

Prism offers a wireless receiver also. Can be done.

Explains what happened to my set. Blew out two weeks ago waiting on Best Buy to come and fix. Lucky I bought the service contract.

Yes, but they are REALLY expensive for what you get in terms if features. And with all the new features coming out so quickly, I'd hate to invest so much in a TV that may be obsolete in a few years.

We have had an indoor flat screen on our lanai for years with no problems. It is tucked far enough in under the roof to keep it dry in a rain storm and we keep a large towel over it when not in use to keep the pollen out of the insides. We also keep the remote in a plastic zip-lock baggie as it is near the screen wall gets wet when it rains. Not worried about security, although we do bring the tv in the house if we plan on an extended vacation of a couple weeks or more.

You definitely have a mean streak, beating on golfers when they are down. At my current course one of the houses plays a recording of a dog barking on weekends. If you pay attention you can tell because it loops and repeats.
