House Numbers
I am noticing that some people take the house numbers off their window. I'm just curious why? I think it could be a dangerous thing to do, given that the emergency personnel know where to find houses by the house numbers in the windows. Also, have noted that a few people who have taken the house numbers off have put up really pretty decorative numbers over their garage or near their front door. Again, putting them in a place that the emergency personnel are not used to. I am only curious.......

I took mine down because I thought they were unattractive, but my number is prominently displayed on my lamp post.

I don't recall seeing house numbers in windows.
|
I see them all of the time in the new sections of the villages.

To my knowledge none of the houses on our street have numbers in the windows. The only numbers I see placed are on lamppost or on garage.

I believe houses have them on the window and villa's have them over the garage. However, they are in a place where emergency personnel know to look. So let's say a person has taken them off the window (or above the garage), it will just take longer for them to find the correct house.

We were told by EMT personnel that as long as you have the house number posted somewhere on the house, garage, or lamp post, they will find you.

an assumption was made that because the numbers were there during construction they somehow became the place where emergency personnel know where to look.....
I really don't think so or it would have been mentioned by somebody to somebody about why the ugley numbers need to remain. I also think the numbers on the garage or lamp post are much easier to see. And in the age of GPS does it matter? And it is also impossible to miss the person jumping up and down in the driveway!! btk |

Walking tonight in the dark, I noted that I could not read the names or numbers on the lamp post. However, I could see the numbers in the windows. The only ones that really stood out and I could see very clearly were the lit up signs on the lamp posts

What about emergency people finding your house? As I said the lamp post names and numbers are dark and don't show up at night. Just wondering aesthetics or safety?

Years ago the middle school where we lived in conjunction with the fire department had a fund raiser the kids had 6 inch number stencils and a frame that held them along with cans of reflective yellow or white paint. For $5 the kids sprayed your house number on the driveway where it met the street (basically just before the gutter). They looked pretty good as the numbers had a nice font and then the EMT's and fire could find the houses. For an additional $5 they would put a border design around them. Raised a lot of money for the school arts program.

Also 802 has always been between 800 and 804.... |
address posted may save your life
Having run emergency calls for 30years let me tell you it is a big help to know you are at the right address.....when somebody has stopped breathing or having a heart attack minutes are critical
all homes should have address posted. all homes should if possible have address posted in same location. all homes should have 4" reflective numbers in my opinion its best if the numbers are posted near the street ok i agree emergency vehicles should have spot lights....thats great but why should you have to flash a light all over searching for the house number.... during a heavy rainstorm or fog its tuff to see the address...simple is best! I am surprised that with all the rules and covenants in TV this has not been addressed...... lastly if you have a stubborn neighbor who doesnt think the address numbers are pretty....help them by posting yours....if the house on either side of the emergency address has numbers maybe it will save there life |
