speed limit enforcement

Yesterday (9-26) there were 3 deputies doing speed control on bailey trail, 2 cars 1 motorcycle. They were just getting ready to leave when I stopped to ask about enforcement of speed along cart paths of morse and Buena vista. All 3 agreed they as far as speed goes, they are not allowed to monitor. Alcohol, reckless driving but as 1 of them said, an officer driving down both of those busy roads can hardly watch the road and observe the paths safely. Like I could tell a pepsi can from a miller lite can 1 observed.

there just is not enough of it.....and I think they should put in a multiplier for repeat offenders...something like doubling or tripling whatever the last fine was.

The more the better.

Whatever...

jrandall 09-27-2013 10:06 PM

One of my golfing friends was ticketed in her golf cart on Bailey yesterday morning. Everyone needs to drive at 21 or below or you might just get an expensive ticket and court visit. No fun!

champion6 09-27-2013 10:12 PM

21? Why not 19.9?

Someone passed 3 golf carts on Bailey Trail, (going very fast), a few months ago and there was the man with the speed gun and pulled her over. If you need to get somewhere that fast, take your car.

I find it entertaining that a RETIRED person would be in such a hurry as to get a speeding ticket in a golf cart!:1rotfl:

And it will be shorter for some if these speeders are not stopped.

what does being retired have to do with being in a hurry?

DonH57 09-28-2013 08:25 AM

Despite retirement some people opt to continue their tradition of waiting to late to get to their next destination or try to schedule to much to do in one day.

Friendliest Hometown??

They call this Florida's Friendliest Hometown? I must respectively disagree with that. You have many people that want their fellow Villagers to get a ticket for speeding in a Golf cart. I say so what?---Get a life! Lets see. We are mad at people speeding in their cart. Passing with their cart. Following people too close through the gate. Playing golf too slow. Saving seats at the square. Hogging parking spaces at the square. I could go on forever. I suggest if things are really that bad here, I would get back on 95 Northbound and go back to your Utopia where you came from. If you decide to stay, chill out and enjoy the life. If the worst thing that happens to me today is someone exceeding the speed limit and passing me in my cart, I think I had a great day!:beer3:

People are allowed to feel what they feel, and they're allowed to express that here without being told to leave. This is what a forum is for. You're supposed to express your opinions, albeit civilly.

billethkid 09-28-2013 12:05 PM

the subject has nothing to do with chilling out or not being chilled or whatever the expression is meant to imply.

It is perfectly normal for those of us who obey the law want to see the abusers get nailed and pay a hefty fine or fines....and how much more relaxed can one be to be happy to tears if we are lucky enough to witness the ticketing:)

I never speed, but just hope they don't check my Panera cup and find beer.:ho:

Amazing how many different flavored coffees are out there now :MOJE_whot:

DonH57 09-28-2013 01:11 PM

I thought that's what the Dunkin's cup was for! I don't speed either.

I guess some of us feel there is a reason for speed limits and we like to see people to obey the rules of the road and/or multimodal paths.

So, you've never come out of Pannera Bread or Red Sauce and crossed the street to go to the square without first walking to the crosswalk at the corner? If you were ticketed for this law breaking, would you expect those around you to be happy to tears at this law enforcement activity?

I don't understand people that pose questions like this. Just because we are retired does not mean that we don't have appointments to get to or are not involved in other activities. Many retired people work part time jobs and are involved in many various activities, especially here in The Villages.
Try showing up to the golf course ten minutes after your reserved tee time some time.

Have you considered that the ticket that these golf carts are given is not for speeding but for driving a non-registered vehicle? Your concern seems to be about safety, but that has nothing to do with the ticket. If speed was a safety issue there would be a speed limit imposed on the cart paths.

Quite frankly, I think it is the opposite. When I worked, if I showed up 5 - 10 minutes late, it was no big deal. Many jobs these days are flex time and nobody makes an issue about being at work at a specific time. However, as you point out, dinner reservations, tee times, doctor appointments, movie times, etc. are all inflexible.

One way to "chill-out" is to disobey safe driving rules, get into an accident and end up in the morgue. Brrrr, it's cold in there with no clothes and only a thin sheet to cover yourself. :ho:

karostay 09-28-2013 01:40 PM

fast carts,slow golf,saved seats,bad service, whine,whine,whine
Welcome to the Villages

Off topic, but I loooooved your typo, "It's old in there"!
I hope I will be very old when I'm in there!:clap2:

I've been reading a lot on the issue of speed limits on the cart paths, specifically the Multi-Modal paths that we use to move around The Villages.

The District Counsel has written a memo saying that there is no point in posting a speed limit on the MMPs for two reasons:

1. The District has no law enforcement authority for such a rule.
2. The Sheriff's Office has said they have no authority to enforce traffic control devices on the MMPs because their lawyer says the paths do not meet the state definition of streets, highways or roads.

And, of course, you are correct that offenders are not receiving speeding tickets, but tickets for driving an unregistered vehicle because when a golf cart exceeds 20 mph it looses its status as a golf cart and becomes a motor vehicle. I take it that the tickets are issued to carts operating in the diamond lanes of The Villages roadways, where the Sheriff's Office has jurisdiction.
