Reserving seats
I was at Lake Sumter Landing and my husband and I got up to dance. When I got back to my seat, the man next to me told me that my seat was reserved. What!! I told him I was sitting there first. He told me I should have let him know I was coming back. Of all the nerve. I just got up to dance. I did not know I have to inform people that I was coming back. There were plenty of seats also. :boxing2:

One of the frequent topics on this site. Do a search on "saving seats". You are not alone!

And the craziest thing is there were plenty of seats. I am not living there yet, but when I do, I think I will bring my own chair with my name on it also. |

Wait until it is full snowbird season and there is a Rocky & The Rollers performance at Lake Sumter Landing!
You will have to arrive no later than 4:30 if you want a chair. There will be lots of chairs roped together indicating they are saved. For the most part, Villagers respect that saving until 5 pm but after the show starts at 5, the chairs will be filled either by those who saved them earlier or by those who did not find an empty chair. You are always welcome to bring your own chair and lots of Villagers do exactly that. Yes, you will have to put some item on the chair (not your own brought from home) when you dance, go to the drink hut, or over to the restroom at City Fire. |

Snowbirds..are the sacrificial lambs around here.
We blame them for what Frogs have created during their absence But on any given day you can go to Spanish Springs and 30% of the seats are roped off by 3 pm. If Scooter is playing it's noon |
With the onslaught of people who will arrive in Nov-Dec-Jan, it's probably best to bring our own nylon fold-up chairs, with name written on them in magic marker with 7-inch letters.

It says in the Recreation News(or at least it used too, haven't looked lately) that NO ONE is supposed to "save seats" for groups of people. I would certainly hope that the chair you are using would be safe. Maybe someone sitting close by would "watch over" your chair until you finished the dance if you asked them.
I personally wish that TV would do away with providing the chairs at all , and just have everyone bring their own-it would eliminate the "saving" problem. For those who truly cannot carry their own chair, maybe have a few chairs there that people could get for a refundable dollar deposit or something. they could have one of the guys who sets up the chairs now be there to collect the money. It would certainly save TV some money, which in turn might keep them from raising the amenities fees. It is ridiculous for people to go to the square early in the morning and 'save" 40 chairs for the special events like the Christmas program. And then 1 0r 2 people watch over the chairs. The people who are trying to be considerate show up and wait in their seats-which are WAY in the back because all the "saved chairs have the best view--they get to see bunches of people show up about 10 mins before the show starts, and sit down in the best seats. This is extremely rude IMO. We quit going to the Christmas tree lighting because of all of the rude drunk people who for many reasons take away from the true spirit of the ceremony. I know this post may make a lot of people angry, but it is the way it is. |

I think the better idea is to hand a chair to people as they come in, as was (is?) done at Brownwood. For big events when people come early in the day to "save seats", maybe the rule should be: "If you want to save seats early for a group, then bring your own chairs to set there until band time." |

Nope agree totally, don't even try to go to the squares anymore, just not worth the hassle. Had a guy at Spanish Springs try to make me move from a seat because he wanted to save the entire row and it was only 3 PM. Don't think he will do that again....but it's a hassle... |
If they would stop hiring such good entertainers we would not have this problem.

"We quit going to the Christmas tree lighting because of all of the rude drunk people who for many reasons take away from the true spirit of the ceremony."
I have attended 5 Christmas tree lighting ceremonies in the past 4 years here in The Villages. All of them have been fun. I did never see any rude drunk people. Everyone was having a great time. The ceremonies are what you make them. Go there with a bad attitude and you will have a bad time. Go to the ceremony with a happy outlook and you will have a good time. A little advance planning helps, too. Do not go to the tree lighting ceremony at the last minute. You will not get a seat. Go early, get a seat, talk with friends or make a new friend. |
cut the tape
Why can't the events people just remove the tape or rope on the "saved seats" as they move around the square? No one could argue with them.
|
They don't get paid enough to get into confrontations.

Another part of the story about the saved seat, is the some other people that were sitting right near me saw what was happening. Someone actually gave me a new seat to sit in and the woman in back of me said she saw and heard the whole thing and it was wrong. I am sure there are plenty of nice people there who are considerate of others. :BigApplause:

ah,the annual saving seats thread-I remember taking my own chairs to Lake Sumter and setting them up behind some chairs that had been saved for a couple of hours. The people came just as the parade was to start and lo and behold chose to stand up and not even sit in their front row seats they'd been saving.I had to even laugh at their absurdity. This was at the St Patrick's Day parade.

I've learned to bring my own. This topic is getting real old. Have seen posts about it for years now. For all you nubes there are 100,000 people in the villages and not enough seats for everyone so take a tip and bring your own and you'll always have a seat.

Who is this Scooter everyone seems to be so enamored with?
|
He's a villages resident who works/worked as a DJ at Disney, now here.
