Best Place For Fish Fry
My wife's birthday falls on a Friday and so she desires to follow tradition and eat at a fish place. she likes a fish fry. Suggestions? |
I think Lighthouse has great fried fish and a beautiful view. I also enjoy the seasoned whitefish at Cane garden. You can't go wrong with either.
|
Let the Lighthouse reccommendations begin.
|
The Lighthouse for the view - if you get there before sundown and snag an outdoor table.
Hacienda Hills Country Club for the excellent fried fish. Take the beer battered fish over the panko battered fish. You will not be sorry! |
DiscoverCitrusCounty.com - Oysters of Crystal River
Crystal River, a 40 minute drive. South of town a few miles is Homosassa ParK, great for viewing wildlife/manatees and with a boatride. Make it special...get outta here! |
If you want a good fish fry, go to Bonifay and have 'fish n chips'
If you want a 'view' go to Lighthouse! |

The fish and chips at Bonefish are really great, my wife and I split a salad and an order of fish and chips, more than enough to eat. I usually don't like tartar sauce but theirs is very fresh and tasty..

Can't beat The Lighthouse for fried fish, service and ambiance

kittygilchrist, you mentioned grouper. YUM!
Is there any place close by that sells good grouper sandwiches? We are looking for a local place that has good grouper, clams, calamari, shrimp. Growing up on Clearwater Beach we got spoiled by the offering of really fresh, inexpensive places like "Frenchy's". That will be on of the first things we look for as we move to TV. Any favorites out there within driving distance for an evening or lunch? Thx! |
Where I come from (Toledo, Ohio) on Lake Erie, a fish fry is different than going out for some fried fish. A fish fry usually involved either perch or walleye and was usually at a VFW hall or a church. For one price you would get all you could eat of the best tasting fish with a bunch of great sides.

Stumpknockers on the river.
|
We're from the New Bedford, Ma area, so we're use to seafood fresh off the boat. While I agree with all the other recommendations, no one has mentioned Sam's St. John's in Spruce Creek Terrace. Good fried scallops, fish (usually haddock or cod), oysters, and on Fridays, whole bellied clams. Also, checkout the crystal petals, like a bloomin' onion, but big, separate chunks of onion. We've got everybody in our golf group going there. Not fancy, but the food is good.

I went looking online for a grouper sammich. Look what I found! |
If you are looking for great fried fish and not too concerned about alot of atmosphere try O'Shucks on 301 in Wildwood on Fridays.
They have a very large piece of fried haddock with fries and coleslaw for $7.99, excellent. |
Lighthouse is good but we aren't too crazy about fried fish with thick battering so we go to Gator Joes for the best fried fish! Lightly battered!

Grouper seems to be seasonal here so we usually find it offered as "daily specials" rather than a staple menu item. Have had it at Arnold Palmers, Cody's and a few other places. Another thing to mention is if it is really good seafood, it won't be inexpensive! |
fish fry
St Johns seafood is good

Bunky's Raw Bar (Sports bar with all kinds of seafood; family friendly) on the beach......grouper on the menu. Calamari, everything seafood. Casual place. AGAIN, no doubt you will find exactly what you are looking for right in THE VILLAGES.......but if you crave a day trip or a "weekend away" , save the info below. Like for a special anniversary trip......the Hilton comes with good recommendations. The restaurants all look great.....46 of them. Reviewed September 3, 2013 FOR BUNKY'S Grouper was humongous but great! The poke was excellent also... ************************************************** ***** Reviewed June 2013 FOR BUNKY'S When I'm hungry for a good fish sandwich, we head to Bunky's. It's usually crowded and often loud, but that's not a complaint. Lots of families eat at Bunky's and the kids enjoy the games and fish tanks. I usually get a fish sandwich or a fish dinner (grouper if they have it). But the last time we went, I had my yearly craving for wings. I'd never had wings at Bunky's before, and these were very good. I had Howie's Specialty Wings: "Naked wings tossed in so not hot, teriyaki & garlic". The sauce was a wonderful combination of flavors. The next time I want wings, this is where I'm going. But this is mainly a seafood place, with lots of fish and seafood on the menu. I've never had fish here that I didn't like. Sometimes they have fish tacos as a special. I love these and wish they'd put them on the regular menu. There is a full liquor bar, and the bar area itself is usually full of locals. Jack's Seafood Bistro and many others are supposed to be great.......according to a friend of mine. STILL LOVE THE LIGHT HOUSE AT LAKE SUMTER LANDING..... |
I really can't tell the difference between grouper, cod and haddock when they're fried. All are moist, mild white fish, basically tasteless. Whatever The Lighthouse uses for its fried fish, they do it right.
