Some are not courteous at town squares
It's not a big problem but it does happen sometimes. When it does happen, it might be wise to change your seat, if you can find another seat.
On Wednesday I went to see a great new band called "N-Tunes". After I was there a while, a group of women came and sat nearby. It seems they had been drinking and were really LOUD talkers. Then they would get up to dance and would sometimes stand in front of me while talking to their friends in a loud voice. On the dance floor they started loud conversations as if the band wasn't there. I think they overpowered the music at times. One of them was trying to convince a man to follow her out to her car. He didn't seem too willing until she said, "I have a beer for you in the car." Before the band starts playing there's an anouncement from WVLG that says, "No coolers allowed." People must have started bringing their own drinks in a cooler. So now it seems that some of them are drinking in their cars. Here are some of the replies I expect to get: Hey, chill-out! What do you care if people are drinking in their cars. And if people are too loud for you, just take your chair and move it! I just thought I would save you the trouble. |
You won't hear that from me. Loud drunks, male or female, can be obnoxious. They really have no idea that they are causing others distress, spoiling their enjoyment . I have nothing against liquor, but am really uncomfortable around anyone who has no idea that they are rip snorting drunk.

In response to "One of them was trying to convince a man to follow her out to her car" men are weak and then you throw in an offer of beer, the poor guy didn't have a chance.

Maybe THE VILLAGES is indeed getting too big......for comfort. It must have been really nice when it was new and a smaller population. We've been looking in a town with a population of 2,900 souls.....on a barrier island with the Atlantic Ocean beaches, a real fishing pier and very beautiful large homes , larger acreage.........not really second guessing ourselves, but weighing all the pros and cons before making the big move next spring or summer.......... Crowds and noise are not our cup of tea.....so thanks again for your post. |
I don't think it's the size of The Villages that is the problem. You can find loud obnoxious people in any size crowd. The squares are open to the public so the noisy people could be from one of the surrounding towns. That being said, we've lived here a year and have yet to encounter a really loud person or group and we go to the squares often.

There are loud and obnoxious people all over the world in every corner. This now convinces me to buy my own chair and when I'm not happy, I'll move to a different area.

New flood insurance rules have consequences for Florida's economy | Tampa Bay Times Read this article for an update on what's happening to flood insurance rates in Florida effective Oct 1 because of the Biggert-Waters Act passed by congress in 2012. One new home owner's rates are increasing from $1700 per year to $10,000 to $12,000 per year. |

The OP's experience is exactly why I stay away from the Town Squares. Along with that issue is the fact that the dance area is overcrowded, especially with line dancers.
I thoroughly enjoy dancing but the circumstances at the town squares are not conducive for couples dancing. Beside which I can not condone seat savers:D |

thank the original poster for asserting that it is only "some" that do that or any other obnoxious behavior.
I certainly would not give a thought to not going to the squares or not moving here or moving here due to what are nothing more than ISOLATED incidents. And as was already stated the size of TV has nothing to do with the incident or incidents like it. Inconsiderate folks exist in any size community. The 98+ percent of us live in and enjoy TV and have done so since the population was 30,000!!! btk |
no Surprise:wave:, what drunks do!:p:loco: Alcohol brings out the best it people:a20:. You know we all have that Alcoholic relative that could of made it big if it wasn't for the weakness!:wine: After all it an excuss to act like as $ss. :wine::eclipsee_gold_cup::eclipsee_gold_cup:

Seat savers are not a problem. Bring a chair, set it where you want and enjoy The Villages lifestyle. |

Not too big. There has always been a divide between the social drinkers and the heavy drinkers. I feel bad for people who have the need to arm themselves with what us Germans used to call "Dutch Courage" to have a fun evening. If we were all alike we would have no one to feel superior to. |
I have a problem with people that never drink.:loco: Way to weird for me to tolerate sober.:beer3:

We often go to the square for just a short time. We have been fortunate to not experience any rude behavior. Quite the opposite - folks go out of their way to indicate if chairs are open. While I'm sure there are instances of overindulgence, we have not personally observed it. At LSL the line dancers stay to one side of the floor. Rarely if ever has the dance floor been crowded except with Rocky and the Rollers.

i wondering why the person wanted to take the guy to her golf cart...stranger danger

If I remember correctly when you were here a couple of years ago you had your children visiting with their small children most of the time. You rented a home north of 466 with it's own pool and spent a good deal of time at the residence you had rented. I think to get the feel of The Villages, you need to be here without guests and spend some time at the squares, the pools, the rec centers and with groups of us TOTVrs. I so hope you will make the best choice to be the happiest you can be. Many of us love this place. Many like us don't go to the squares much either. |
When it comes to partying one of the biggest problems with my first marriage was she couldn't stand me drunk and I couldn't stand her sober. So, there you go!

The human brain can operate only as fast as the slowest brain cells through which the electrical signals pass. Recent epidemiological studies have shown that while excessive intake of alcohol kills off brain cells, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. Thus, regular consumption of beer, wine etc., helps eliminate the weaker cells, constantly making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. The result of this in-depth study verifies and validates the causal link between all-weekend parties and job related performance. It also explains why, after a few short years of leaving a university and getting married, most professionals cannot keep up with the performance of the new graduates. Only those few that stick to the strict regimen of voracious alcoholic consumption can maintain the intellectual levels that they achieve during their college years. I know this to be true because I read it on the internet |
It seems to me that all these complaints about seat hogs, rudeness and drunks are due to cheapskates piling in at the squares to get the cheap Happy Hour drinks!
We always go to the squares a bit later, after happy hours are over, to avoid the sun and heat. If you go between 7-9pm there's no problem with seating nor "drunks". A little bit of flexibility goes a long way. Go a little bit later. Why do people want to sit there in one chair for 4 hours anyway??? |

We actually know a fellow from our town who moved down to Fruitland Park with his wife......last autumn. He's told my husband that they LOVE THE HAPPY HOURS AT THE VILLAGES.....and do drive to TV very often, from Fruitland Park. I agree with your last sentence totally..........unless one is sitting at the beach watching the sun rise or set.......or just watching the waves lap on shore..........or watching the moon come up over the mountains. |
I think it is more a case of personality. If you complain about the little things you disagree with at the square, you most likely complain about slow play on the courses, fast carts on the cart paths, neighbors that park in the street, neighbors that put their trash out two early, people that smoke, one cart in a parking spot, and so on. Let's quit whining like children and find a solution. Maybe a tip of the day in the daily sun telling folks what is considered VILLAGES CORRECTNESS. You will reach more people and may even have a positive effect. Complaining anonymously on a web site infuriates people more than it changes them.

Everyone we met in THE VILLAGES was super friendly and down to earth. The place sells itself based on it beauty and cleanliness, wonderful zoning which keeps everything looking lovely......... Guess we've been Yankees too long ..........we respect our own privacy as well as everyone elses. When we first moved to Vermont in our very early twenties.....it was a different world........but we grew to love and respect the "strong silent type of folks" as well as the "salt of the earth" who would do anything for a neighbor..........even though they are NOT flamboyant, loud, aggressive or the "look at me" type. A different world, but one we grew used to after spending our youth in New Jersey. I guess we are Yankees at heart. |

I think the melting pot here is hard to handle at times, in all honesty. We all think ....what is the matter with THEM? |

I wondered the exact same thing. Are they that desperate for a date? Sad. We live in a "cradle to grave community"....so we don't have, or are not aware of so many desperate daters........all of our neighbors are in long term marriages with children , grand children and great grandchildren........ Long happy marriages......we have watched our kids grow from infancy to parenthood themselves.........even when our spouses die, dating is the last thing on any of our minds.........if truth be told. Now, the younger set in our community may be "out there" but not the retired folks and seniors.........so I've been seriously wondering if there is something to that book Leisure Ville. Is that what draws so many single people to want to live in TV???? It's reputation for strange encounters....oops, I was thinking "stranger danger".........as per your post above..... I still remember that post and photos I saw on TOTV which mysteriously disappeared later in the morning.......several months back.........of an advert for a bedroom to rent.....the bedroom had a pole for pole dancing and was quite explicitly advertised............some of us saw it and then "poof" it mysteriously was GONE. I believe in truth in journalism. What's the big secret? It looked like a very very old crummy motel room that was set up for "happy ending" kind of dates. Then as mysteriously as it appeared on TOTV and was viewed, it was GONE...............I hope there are no naïve recently widowed or never married folks who get duped into a situation like that. |

If you go to Magic Kingdom (that happy, happy place), you'll still find rude people. Location doesn't remove jerk genes... Ignore them. Life (as we know at our age) is too darned short to rent these idiots space in our head.
