Dog Food Recommendation?
 

My dog is now due to change food from Puppy to adult.. dry .. any recommendations?? She only weighs 12 lbs. The choices are overwhelming.

IAMS naturals....with chicken.
Our dog has been on it since a puppy and is now 5 years old. She still goess ga-ga over the food.

Orijen and Evo. Orijen is available at Sparrs near Brownwood. The other brand they sell (Earthborn Holistic) there is good as well. There is a small bite kibble in the Earthborn for dogs your size.

I rotate these three brands as well as the different flavors (chicken, beef, lamb, etc.) for my dog. He can eat people food with no digestion issues or gas, and he loves it mixed with a small amount of people food..

We think that Orijen is the finest dogfood available. We feed it to our 10 lb dog (as well as to our 70 lb dog). It's available at "Paws For A Moment" on CR 101 just north of CR 466 across from Southern Trace Plaza.

Our 7 year old Cairn would never eat dry food unless mixed with something else until we found Earthborn Wild at Sparrs. I would say that it has improved his stool consistency but then I'd be accused of starting another dog poop thread!

A couple of years ago, one of our dogs developed an allergy to the red dye present in some foods, and our vet recommended a brand they happened to carry. I spoke to a friend who is a vet in another state, and she recommended Blue Buffalo (yes she was familiar with our dogs). We weaned our dogs over to Blue Buffalo and use both the kibble and canned in combination.

I would ask that you read the ingredients on the dog food labels. I was shocked at what I learned. Nature's Select is produced in the US and NEVER had a recall! It's delivered to your home.

When we switched, we found our dogs had more energy and were just all around healthier.

And, as I said..... we never worry about what's in the food.... it's always been safe for our dogs!

Funny, as we have gotten older we have bought more expensive food for our dogs....

Jaggy, what kind of dog is it? Some dogs prone to skin allergies and stomach upset do better on a food that is wheat-, soy-, and corn-free.

If you do some googling, there are a couple of sites that "grade" different dog food brands. We use Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance for our golden, but I am about to go experimenting again.

wag.com carries many, many good brands, and they free-ship to your door in 2 days. You can click on the brands to see the ingredients list. I like that free shipping since we buy big, heavy bags for our 88-lb guy.

And it is true that the quality of what goes in the front of the dog has a direct effect on the quality of what comes out the back. The less cheap filler, the smaller and firmer... Well, you get the idea.

I'm a real fan of Nature's Variety Raw food. It comes in frozen medallions or patties and I use 1/2 a medallion and a scoop of Honest Kitchen dehydrated veggies with a handful of Raw boost kibble from Natures Variety. Over the years I have tried different good quality dog food but about 15 years ago I switched our dogs to raw food and haven't looked back. Their weight stays constant and their skin and coats stay healthy. It is as close to natural as I have seen with convenience. Better than mixing and cooking my own which I used to do.

I've found the independent internet sites that grade dogfood to be very helpful. (Not the Blue Buffalo site which is obviously biased). It is so interesting to read an analysis and comparison of ingredients. I attended a meeting of Responsible Dog Owners in TV in 2007, and a speaker educated us on ingredients. I had no idea some companies use primarily corn meal and road kill. :yuck:

I feed my dogs only raw{ Hare Today }from { Paws for a Moment} on 101
I mix with veggies or you can mix with dry, Origen. My dogs are family and I want to give them the best. Raw is the most healthy food for them.

I tried most of the commercial brands mentioned, she won't go near them.

The only thing she will eat is Sojos and Iams Lamb & Rice. I really like the Sojos, but you have to think ahead.

Does anyone know Gail with the doodle dog Becca? I heard she makes dog food.

Sojos is my next foray. Trying to work out proper amounts for the conversion. Do you give any nutritional suoolements?

I use the grain free formula (no meat) and add my own meat or fish, usually whatever I'm making that night. I try to keep some beef cubes on hand just in case. Generally, I don't cook the meat. I don't add supplements, but I do give a little greek yoghurt.

If you order from the sojos website they ship for free. The customer service people really know what they are talking about.

I would not use IAMS. They had a recall and my dog was one that got the samonella. I am now making my own dog food after spending over $500 in vet bills. He is doing just fine and loves it.

I just went on the "Hare Today" website thinking it was something I might like to try. There were pictures of different sizes of guinea pigs, and also pictures of newly hatched chicks 1 to 3 days old ... it said 25 per bag .... is that what you feed your dogs? :22yikes:

Sojos looks like a food I might be able to handle. I think you add water and "reconstitute" it? This has been a very interesting thread. Obviously foods in the pet industry have changed a lot and I need to educate myself.

Yes, with Sojos you just add water. You can get it with the meat already in it (I've never tried that one). I've found the easiest way is to set it up the night before, if you don't you have to wait about 45 minutes before you can feed it.

interesting reading, esp. the part about being careful what is in "ground" raw food.

If you look under "Whole Prey Pet Foods" on the Hare Today website, you will see the bags of baby chicks and four sizes of guinea pigs. I'm not criticizing others' choice of pet food, it just makes me queasy to think about it. I think my dogs are stuck with Orijen Six Fish formula!

Whole Earth Pet Supply on Bella Cruz and 441 is where I get Arcana for our 14 year old Golden Retriever. I ended up switching 2 years ago after another recall and have been very happy with it.

When we moved to TV, I fed our dog a kibble based diet. We have since gotten a 2nd dog and they both eat and are thriving on RAW FOOD DIETS. They are currently in love with raw beef tripe and chicken. They get 3 and 4 ounces daily over two feedings. Sounds like starvation but they are both healthy, happy, have amazingly white teeth and fantastic temperaments.
Bandit and Tahlula love the dog parks here and at 3 yrs and 1 year of age, they are amazing.
We get the food pattys at Paws For A Moment and they are so helpful and informative there. No kibble as NO GRAIN is good for them.

Recommend you do just like me...LOL. I cook for my dog. She's a boxer with inbred nubs for teeth. She was 20 lbs underweight when adopted due to Pedigree dry food for big dogs. basically hard corn.
I have a back up of some canned foods with high protein and a bag of too expensive food, but she so loves getting some meat, veggies and carbs made from scratch. it's not hard and is less expensive to make. PM if you want tips.

me again...Emma ate it all tonight. some ground beef bought for a buck a pound, oatmeal and potatoes on the cheap, left over cabbage and Brussels sprouts. who knew she would suck up brussels sprouts like they were a delicacy.

That certainly is a glowing recommendation! I think I'll visit PAWS and start experimenting with Raw Food, hopefully chicken or fish.

Dr. Wessner told me that with the veggies you should break them down so that they mimic the stomach contents of prey. In the beginning I used the food processer but got tired of cleaning it. Now I use a little hand grater on the veggies.

Mine loves baked sweet potato, broccoli and salad. I give carrots for treats.

We've been feeding our dog Dick van Pattens Natural Balance (or whatever his is called) for five years. A few weeks ago I noticed that his hair was dull and coarse feeling, even though we supplement with salmon oil. I didn't know why. Used to be smooth & shiny.

The lady at Paws for a Moment gave me a lot of information on feeding raw and/or good-quality kibble. Since Crosby's going to the sitter's for two weeks, I decided to go with the kibble till after we get back. Easier on the sitter. The Paws lady has several different brands of food in her store, but she likes Logic the best. She said for some reason she noticed a change in her dogs' coats immediately with Logic. And guess what--so did we! I did buy some frozen tripe nuggets that I'm throwing on top of the Logic kibbles.

She also informed me that Natural Balance changed its ingredients sourcing and is now using lesser-quality food, some of which is from China. I guess that explains our dog's coat turning to steel wool.

When we get back from our trip, I'm switching to an all-raw diet using ground beef plus meats from her store, which comes from grass-fed animals in PA.

I recommend blue, wet and the grain free dry.

I like variety and home cooking. just bought chicken thighs for .99 a lb. planning to mix with red potatoes. this week, my girl ate burger with Brussels sprouts and oatmeal, and then a basically ham sammich: ham, mayo, raw egg, leftover bread, fresh tomatoes.
I have backup expensive canned and dry food that Emma eats sparingly, for crazy busy days.

shiny coat, healthy, sleek...kitty is a bit dry coated, so we're making sure the fish oil is in the bowl. he loves meow mix, but he'd kill me for real fish.

Taste of the Wild High Prairie Formula. A feed store in Kentucky recommended it for our dog while traveling last year and we have stuck with it after reading reviews.

Pro-Plan Salmon and Rice or Lamb and Rice - We mix it though with cooked hamburger and chicken and also put some oat bran in it as well. Vet says our dogs are thriving and blood work always excellant.

Doyle the Dog, beautiful Black Lab lived a great life for 14 1/2 years. Never sick, just grew old. Along with the plentiful amounts of unconditional love she received every day, she only ate Purina One topped off with a heaping table spoon of yogurt. Never changed her diet. She was healthfully thin her entire long happy life.
She was my first dog. She's been gone about two years now, but still miss her every time I breath.
She also enjoyed a treat every day.

Orajen is the best hands down. You can get it at Paws for a Moment in Buffalo Ridge near Little Bits Cafe. It is biologically tailored for dogs and doesn't have the grains and "meat by-products" that usually make dogs sick. It's not cheap, that's for sure. But my two Boston Terriers have been on it since they were taken off puppy food and they are happy, healthy doggies.
