TOTV Craigs List

Does anyone else notice that this site is becoming The Villages Craig's List? There are many times I get on this site and there are more "for sale" listings than anything else. Has anyone else noticed this?

DougB 10-24-2013 10:17 PM

I haven't noticed

KittyKat 10-24-2013 10:50 PM

YES,YES,YES! I always click on New Posts and after a few pages there's nothing but things for sale. And most of them w/o pictures. I need more gossip and rumors. :girlneener:

Yes! Like KittyKat, I enjoy reading Villages chit chat as opposed to reading sales ads. Sometimes I think I've gone on E-Bay or Craig's List by mistake. I realize that there are category identifiers on the right-hand side. But I wish the ads would go into a separate category of "Stuff for Sale", and not appear under New Posts.

Trish Miller 10-25-2013 03:27 AM

People put their stuff on here because Craigslist doesn't have The Villages under their places to put ads, so for me, I like the fact that we can sell stuff on here :)

Totally agree. I do believe that I even recommended (complained?) to the Moderator a few months ago that a rule be instituted that items must be over $100 in order to be posted on TOTV. Most of these other items can be sold in a yard sale when they are under that amount.

I agree with posters wanting more information and/or gossip. LOL.

graciegirl 10-25-2013 04:18 AM

I absolutely agree.

tainsley 10-25-2013 05:15 AM

I just skip over topics I don't want to read. I also have bought and sold items on TOTV.

I know what you mean, I wonder what is required to get the Villages onto Craigslist.. You are able to do a search using "The Villages" on the Ocala list, there are many entries from the Villages.

McP1605 10-25-2013 05:51 AM

The "for sale" items have been such a great bonus for me as someone that is moving to the Villages and needs lots of stuff. Please don't stop selling. I think it is a great way to find stuff in the area right around us. Maybe items for sale should just put "For Sale…" in the topic and then those that don't want to look at them can just bypass them??? Anyways… personally it has been a great asset for this newbie!

McP1605 10-25-2013 05:57 AM

Oh forgot… meant to add to my last post that I agree that "For Sale" posts are almost useless without pictures and prices. Please add those folks! Thank you!

Parker 10-25-2013 06:26 AM

I'm not sure we'd want Craigs List shoppers coming here. Some of them are known to bring a criminal element with them. I like the aforementioned idea of a separate sales category on this site.

redwitch 10-25-2013 06:39 AM

It would be nice if people listed everything they were selling in one ad rather than several ads and if there were some sort of dollar limit. I mean selling $5-10 items here is ridiculous. But I have found the sale items to be useful -- have both sold and purchased so wouldn't want to see them totally go.

Pepperhead 10-25-2013 07:13 AM

I belong to a Hot Rod forum that uses the same software as this one and they have it configured so you cannot reply to classifieds. You can only PM the OP. They allow the OP to bump their post every three days.

Dr Winston O Boogie jr 10-25-2013 07:17 AM

I hadn't noticed, but so what? How does that affect anyone. If you are not looking to buy something, don't open the ads.

Simple Solution and I have to agree.

graciegirl 10-25-2013 07:32 AM

It is not a biggie. And I HAVE sold items on here. I just wish it was sort of an opt in forum so that the general discussions were separate. There have been some very interesting items on here; a used kitty litter box, butt wipes, and mom's rosary.

I often wonder if people know about the nice consignment shops since they have big hefty guys to drag BIG ITEMS out of your home and to bring it to the next home.

I wouldn't say this if I thought it would harm the forum and I always wonder WHY Bargains and Treasures and Neerly New DON'T advertise on here.

I very much vote for the pictures being a part of any post selling things.

jebartle 10-25-2013 07:41 AM

You are soooo cute Gracie

The unusual items for sale "used litter box, butt wipes and mom's rosary", all in one sentence.....giggle, love it!

PaPaLarry 10-25-2013 07:58 AM

As like everyone else, I too would like to see pictures with items For Sale, along with prices. Then again, people like me (Not too computer savvy) have trouble transferring pictures to the forum or thread. But agree, with everyone else, that they should use the postings "Items For Sale" only, so it doesn't clog up all the other gossip areas. After all, need to be on top of Rumors in TV. hehehe I take it, people outside The Villages, can purchase items also, that are listed? That would bring in Non-Villagers also. Once in a while, I look at Items For Sale, and Items Wanted.

Have to agree. Why does the OP care?

MikeV 10-25-2013 08:37 AM

Just put For Sale as its own section and not show in New Posts. I asked once before if there was a way to sort New Posts so I could skip to the Forums I like to read.

I open those that sound interesting and ignor those that don't. I do not think they are a problem( at least for me) . I would prefer that we continue the current practice unless these ads start to muck up the works. JMHO.

Villageshooter 10-25-2013 08:46 AM

i luv it

for the cost that we pay to be on here ,, i am not here to tell anyone how to run this board,,, i like being able to buy cheap things without having to run all over the villages,, if it changes so be it ,,,this is way down on my list to worry about ,, mr admin u do a great job my friend

jnieman 10-25-2013 11:06 AM

I like the variety of posts including those for sale. If someone wants to not look at them they can go to the main page and click on a category and then they won't show up.

SALYBOW 10-25-2013 11:22 AM

Craigslist

I don't think for sale things should be banned from TOTV but I do agree that there should be a special place for them. Split the new posts into categories: for sale, good old gossip, new rumors, gripes and complaints, recommendations and put downs... Well maybe just For Sale and not for sale. :loco:

NotGolfer 10-25-2013 02:10 PM

Variety is nice! I don't read ALL of the posts here (do you?) so just skim and open up the ones that sound like a good thread to read. It's never been an issue for me. Besides that I've been able to purchase some great things at a reduced price here PLUS have sold some items myself as well. I like that we have the opportunity on this site. Don't see it as a problem!!

bkcunningham1 10-25-2013 02:17 PM

The classified "for sale" items are in a separate category. If you don't want to look at them, or if you do want to look at them and skip the other forums; that is how the site is designed.

Doesn't matter to me. I just read what looks interesting and don't look at the others.

I think it's great to sell furniture, golf carts, etc., via TOTV. I don't think anyone disputes that. We can all benefit from that type of ad. But I think that Brightspot was referring to the type of ads that offer item for a few dollars each ... items which are perhaps best sold in garage sales. And some posters do a separate ad for each small item which seems unnecessary. I think Kathie's suggestion of having a minimum dollar amount is a very good idea.

But in the whole scheme of things, it's no biggie. The ads can be ignored.

Wing-nut2 10-25-2013 02:39 PM

If you don't want to see things FOR SALE, Don't go to the For Sale section.

We don't go to any for sale section. There they are, just right there in front of us mixed in with everything else. And it isn't a biggie, really or in anyway insurmountable, it is though getting to be the preponderance of posts as Brightspot points out.

Oh well.

It is what it is.

Gracie, do you click on "Quick Links" and then go to "Today's Posts?" I don't think everyone does that so they aren't getting the same feed you are getting. Some people just go to the main page and go to the different categories and read the forum. That way you aren't subjected to seeing the classified ads if you don't want to see them.

I agree..............just how long does it take to scroll past something 'for sale' and not open it. It seems like a pretty trivial thing to complain about.

It is. You are right....And now BK has taught us how to avoid it.

I open those that sound interesting and skip those that don't. I would prefer things the way they are. I enjoy reading them much more than some of the long winded (all about ME) posts.

justjim 10-25-2013 07:40 PM

I am inclined to agree that a minimum amount is a good idea. Amount? I don't know ....... but for some reason $25.00 sounds about right to me. Who would spend $3.00 in gas and an hour of time for a $5 or $10 item?

True it's not the end of the world one way or another but just seems like common sense to me.

Garage sales can bring an undesirable element directly to your door and into your garage since you can't have any items for sale outside. Being able to advertise by targeting TOTV readers seems to carry less risk than offering an item to the broader Craigslist market. Actually, for the small dollar items, it does seem like selling those things can be more trouble than it is worth regardless of how you do it. Some things should just go to the thrift store or put them in your trunk and trip up to the flea market and offer them ALL to a vendor for resale.
