Hurray! got everything I need for Thanksgiving dinner!

I'm ready for Thanksgiving and it's still a week away! I am all set to cook traditional dinner except we cook a turkey breast instead of a whole turkey.

:a040:

I love to cook Thanksgiving dinner.

Me too. Checked my yeast and it hasn't expired. Got frozen yellow squash, pecans and brown sugar and two packages of refrigerated orange cranberry relish from Publix, have the fresh turkey on order and have my supplies for both the cherry and pumpkin pie. Have to stock up on salad stuff early next week and broccoli for the broccoli parmesan but have enough celery and onion for dressing...wait, low on eggs.need creamed corn for corn custard. Should get more butter.

Need to use my Hallmark program to make menus and place cards. I have always done that. The kids aren't going to be here this year, but someone that has been my friend since we were five, she and her husband will be here.

She likes my cooking. Hope I don't disappoint.

Good for you! Would you like to do my shopping for me? :-)

cquick 11-21-2013 08:12 PM

oh my, that sounds lovely. It will only be the 3 of us and my mom. All very traditional, but no cranberry sauce. I am the only person who will eat it. And I even make my own! Oh, well to each their own!

Connie - go back to the store and get the cranberry sauce. I am the only one who will eat it as well, but can't imagine a turkey dinner without it!

Why deny yourself? If you like it, you should have it.

BTW - It was nice meeting you and Patrick at the last Crisper's TOTV get together.

crock pot turkey breast

I found a yummy sounding recipe for doing the turkey breast in a crockpot which should keep it moist. Since I have 17 coming for dinner, I needed this in addition to the regular turkey. I will cook it in the garage to free up space. Just google crockpot turkey breast. I also cook the regular turkey in a turkey roaster out in the garage. It cooks faster than the oven and is always moist. I let the thawed turkey dry out in the fridge overnight, then baste with olive oil and Kitchen Bouquet before cooking. which gives it a nice crisp brown skin.
Hope you all have many blessings to be thankful for.

that is a good idea! I think I will do it this year. I used to have about 30 people at my house for holidays when we lived "up north". I had a turkey roaster that sat out on the back (unheated) porch. cooked the turkey out there. It was so good that way.

I did the turkey breast in a crockpot once and it was delicious. It got brown too. We used to do turkey breast in a smoker outdoors and boy, was that good! Takes forever though, especially if the weather is cold.

Coarsely grind the cranberries and oranges in meat grinder or food processor. Sweeten to taste with granulated sugar.

This is the recipe I use. I add chopped apple and sometimes nuts. I've also made this as a gelatin salad. It is yummy.

If you have a little bit of extra "time" here is one that everybody will surely eat and enjoy:

CRANBERRY ORANGE RELISH

2 CUPS FRESH CRANBERRIES (BAG IN PRODUCE DEPT)
1 LARGE SEEDLESS NAVAL ORANGE
1/2 CUP SUGAR
1/4 CUP "GRAND MARNIER" ORANGE LIQUEUR **

Wash orange, but do not peel it.

Cut seedless naval orange into small 1 inch pieces.

Combine cranberries and orange pieces in a food processor or strong blender

CHOP (do not puree).

Add sugar and Grand Marnier Orange Liqueur

Pulse until combined.

Refrigerate for at least six hours or overnight.
Can be made a day ahead.

Put in a pretty bowl and bring to your next party "invite" or serve at home with turkey or spiral sliced ham or roast chicken.

It's a cut above canned Ocean Spray (which is still good in a pinch if you buy the whole berry variety, not the jellied type).

p.s. **Frozen orange juice concentrate may be used in place of the Grand Marnier Orange Liqueur.

You know C....It might be, but our son in law likes it...so it could be bi-partisan.

It is a fact that this moderate loves some Democrats........

More than others. ;) AND some Republicans more than others too.

FROZEN ORANGE SALAD old recipe clipping

Frozen Orange Salad Recipe Clipping | RecipeCurio.com

This recipe probably would no longer be popular among the younger generation of parents.......who prefer natural foods.

They much prefer fresh cut up fruit for their children.......

..........which is what I do....tropical fruits, etc. or fruits in season......with no additives. No cooking or mixing. No cans to open. Just slice and serve fresh as finger foods....berries, pineapple chunks, bananas, pears, tangerines, clementines, apples......cantaloupe...grapes of course.

However, this is identical to a recipe I used to make when our kids were little.......found it under VINTAGE RECIPE CLIPPINGS.....great website if you are looking for a long lost recipe of your mom's, your aunt's or your own from the '60s or '70s.

FROZEN ORANGE SALAD using Jello and canned mandarin oranges, orange sherbet, etc.

This Thanksgiving I have Harry & David Rogue Valley Royal Riviera Pears arriving early in week.

They are so sweet and smooth as silk..........you can eat them with a spoon. HUGE PEARS. Not hard.

Everything old is new again as far as serving the younger generation their fruit.....without preservatives or adding sugar or heavy syrups. Since this is what the little ones were raised on........they don't really crave the sweets.
