WHO IS THE BEST COOK ?

Lets face it, my wife can't spill milk on corn flakes so I do the cooking in the house. She does like to bake though and my waist size will support her for the record. However, who past or present, in your house can wear the the crown of Paula Dean Ya'll or the Bam Man Emeril Lagasse?

Re: WHO IS THE BEST COOK ?

Since I don't want to spend the rest of my days in the kitchen, I am going to say that me and the missus share the cooking.

I make great sugar-free desserts. I am also the more inventive when it comes to creating new meals or breaking down a meal we had in a restaurant that we enjoyed. I watch the Food Channel occasionally and if a new recipe strikes a nerve I will write it down or find the recipe via Google and print it out and give it a shot. I have a book full of keepers and a few discards. The problem with most recipes is that they are for more than two and have to be cut down.

Re: WHO IS THE BEST COOK ?

During the first half or so of marriage my wife did all the cooking. About 20 years ago I decided I wanted to learn to cook, and we gradually began to share. Last few years I do almost all of the cooking. We have sort of a rule, one cooks, the other cleans up. Works well for us. I used to do some "gourmet" cooking, now neither of us needs the calories and usually we're only cooking for the two of us, so it's pretty basic. I do a lot of soups and stews in the fall and winter, lots of grilling in the summer.

My next door neighbor Bill is the best cook. He cooks for us on a regular basis. If we ever sell the house, we should get extra money for it since he is next door. Barefoot has had his cooking. What say you, Bare?

Re: WHO IS THE BEST COOK ?

I was the best cook in the family until our son moved here with us and I can say he has taught me a lot of new things. So it is both of us right now. He can't bake and I am the best at that. He has cooked professionally for about 15 years so I probably have to say he is the best at cooking. We both search out new recipes to see who can come up with something different. He does make great ribs, they fall off the bone and his other special is meat loaf. Think I'll hire him out when we move to TV.

samhass 05-08-2008 02:31 AM

Re: WHO IS THE BEST COOK ?

Mikark, you should hire him out. I can't say that I have had outstanding (really fabulous)food in TV. At the "better" CC's I think the food is acceptable..nothing more.

Yes Sammy, I agree. Bill for President. Oh no, that's Obama, a different thread.

Bill for Best Cook. Yes, that's it. His shrimp masala is to die for. Not only that, he has the best party golf cart in TV!

Re: WHO IS THE BEST COOK ?

Our granddaughter is graduating from high school in two weeks. I will do the cooking for her graduation party. She lives nearby and her parents are renting a tent for their backyard.. I will be cooking for an open house and she is expecting "maybe more" than 150 people of assorted ages. It is not a hard menu; sloppy joes, coleslaw, sweet baked beans, potato salad. The desserts are up to her parents. I will be cooking the sloppy joe and freezing ahead of time. I love doing this for a crowd. I have learned my lesson. People eat more of good plain cooking at events like this. I save my wowser things for our group of friends.

No point to this post. Just sharing a happy moment.

Hands down it is me. I love to cook and Tom loves to eat....well I like that now too. Cooking is a hobbie for me. New, creative recipes, world cuisine, comfort food, whatever, it is just fun for me. When it is Tom's turn to cook we go out.

Actually, Donna, I think Chels has taken some cooking classes at the Learning College. Cooking for Dummies or something similar. (Oh, I just read this over, sounds like I'm saying Chels is a dummy, nothing could be further from the truth! That was the actual name of the class. )

I could sure use some cooking lessons, although they'd probably be wasted on me. In theory I'd love to cook a lot, but in actual fact I just get terribly bored in the kitchen. I don't know if anything is offered free in TV .. if there are cooking classes, wouldn't it be fun to do it as a group?

Donna 05-08-2008 03:54 AM

If we did it as a group, the teacher would resign...lol :yikes:

I think that's a great idea..I love to cook, hate to food shop..We have to look into this...;)

Re: WHO IS THE BEST COOK ?

At our house, my husband is the breakfast cook most weekends unless we have a crowd.
Then I make my breakfast pizza since it serves a crowd and I can sip my Bloody Mary or Irish Coffee and socialize while it bakes.

I'd have to say, I'm the better cook,,, tho he is very capable.
I don't enjoy cooking for 2 as much as I enjoy cooking for a big group tho.
At our annual Christmas party, we may have as many as 150 guests :yikes:
and I make most of the food.

Re: WHO IS THE BEST COOK ?

Since both of us have worked all our lives and with no kids, we eat out except for the occasional grill at home. This past winter I decided to learn to cook. I'm doing OK but nothing fancy yet and the Crock Pot is my friend. Wife has little interest in cooking at this time. We intend to retire to TV and we will then make most meals at home. Not sure how the cooking will be shared then.

Biggest problem for an inexperienced cook is cooking for just two. Even cutting down the recipe, they usually still make too much and I hate to waste food and $$. Also building up inventory of spices, etc., so every new recipe isn't so expensive.

Re: WHO IS THE BEST COOK ?

I've always known that I was "different" but when it comes to cooking, I seem to be downright weird. I hate to cook. I mean really, truly hate it. The sad thing is I'm good at it. People love to eat what I fix. Of course, nothing ever comes out the same way twice -- I'm always adding a new spice or herb, a little of this and a lot of that and then the next time a lot of this and a little of that.

Wow, MJ, that's the kind of entertaining I like. How do you make breakfast pizza, sounds great! Is it easy?

From the region in Italy that my family comes from, the type of pizza they make is a "breakfast pizza" as it is more of a bread than a pizza as we know it, but its a tedious, difficult recipe.

Let us have your recipe, pleeeaseee!!

Re: WHO IS THE BEST COOK ?

I enjoy cooking and am pretty good at it. Suzi is a good cook as well. I cook many different things, from gourmet, sea foods, stews, pies, appetizers, and many others. The best way to cook for two is planning. Develop your shopping list for a month at a time. Plan on doing things like Tuscon sage chicken, and the next day a Caesar salad topped with chicken. Or a small baked ham and the next day scallop potatoes with broccoli and ham. Always plan the next meal using left overs from the previous meal. Saves money and provides variety. Progressive dinners are always a fun thing to do. Appetizers and blind wine tasting. So much food, so little time.

Kathi,
Mine is not really a true Italian dish, but very good.
Each pan will serve about 8 average eaters. I serve with fruit and mini-muffins...
It's very easy, here's how it goes...

Spread out a can of crescent roll dough in the bottom of a 9/13 greased pan.
Pinch it together so there's no gaps.
Spread about an inch of shredded hash browns (I use frozen) on the dough.
Salt and pepper the hash browns.
Top with cooked-crumbled sausage and bacon, ham, peppers, onions, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, olives and any other pizza toppings you like.
Whisk 6 eggs and add salt and pepper, then pour evenly over the top.
Then spread with shredded cheeses you like. I mix cheddar, mozzarella and parmesan.
Bake at 350 about 40 mins. Let it sit about 10 mins. before cutting. Yummy!!!

Re: WHO IS THE BEST COOK ?

MJ, just my kind of cooking!!

I think it sounds more like a version of quiche rather than pizza, I'm gonna make it as soon as I get to TV for company. Thanks, yummy is right...

Thanks, Kath

If you let me buy the meats and stuff at Harr's Surf and Turf in Palm Harbor, FL ahead of times, I am a great cook!! Biggest thing I miss about Palm Harbor is Harr's various kabobs as well as their eight or so varities of chicken rolls. http://surfandturfmarket.com/

Have not found a meat market like Harr's anywhere near the Villages. >:(

Re: WHO IS THE BEST COOK ?

This was an easy topic - MY HUBBY. :clap2: :clap2:

He makes THE BEST, and I mean THE BEST, cereal and milk combos in the entire Universe. :#1: :#1:

I have decided to give away his recipe. ;)

He combines at least two or three cereals, in varying proportions
THIS IS AN IMPORTANT STEP - ;D With clean fingers he then combines the ingredients - if any do not land back in the mixing bowl you can add put them back in
Next he takes out his latest blender - only uses ones with glass tops
Measures out his powdered skim milk (powdered skim milk when mixed in a blender becomes sweeter) directly into blender
Adds measured amount of water from what ever jar he is using at the moment
Turns on the blender
Blends until all ingredients are mixed
Pour bubbly foam mixture on cereal
Gently stir milk into cereal
Enjoy - Manja

Options - if tap water is warm he will add crushed ice to the water
Toppings - raisins, dried strawberries, or what ever is handy at the moment

If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them. 024
He has this combo nearly everyday of his life.

From the wife of the Best Cook in the Universe

HB PS he also does dishes, pot and pans

I vote that you start a "Donna's Italian Recipe" thread here so we can all get a chance at them.
