Hot dog restaurant

1 Attachment(s)
Back home in Ohio, in the nearby city of Warren there is a simple restaurant known as the Hot Dog Shoppe. The menu only consists of hot dogs (plain, chili, cheese, sauerkraut etc.) hamburgers, fries and bowls of chili. The place does amazing business and is a must-visit when I make the trek back up North.

My question: Is there anything even close to this down here?

And an example of a typical meal. A little messy, a little unhealthy, but boy is it tasty.

jblum315 12-05-2013 09:04 AM

Boy, does that look yummy! No hot dog shop around here that I know of, but Sam's Club has the best hot dogs with all the trimmings.

Hot dog stand

Try the Hot Dog Stand right outside the exit door at Home Depot. The guy makes a mean dog and he said 80% of his repeat business DOES NOT come from Home Depot. People drive there for his dogs with all the trimmings. They are extremely tasty!

That's my 2 cents.

Chicago Style Hot Dogs

If you want to go for a ride, I recommend Taste of Chicago in Mount Dora.
Taste of Chicago
846 E 5th Ave
Mount Dora, FL 32757

They feature "Chicago Style" hot dogs and beef and sausage sandwiches. I don't know what type of hot dogs are common in Ohio, but you might be pleased with these! Outdoor sitting area and very casual....

:mmmm::bigbow::mmmm:The hot dog stand in Home Depots parking lot sometimes puts the coney sauce from the national Coney Island in Michigan. He runs specials when he has that sauce. Miss my Michigan coney dogs made with Kogel skinned hot dogs. That's the only thing missing from the hot dogs at the stand in Home Depot. He is from Michigan by the way. But I give him a two thumbs up for the sauce when he has it.

When in Ocala, Dee Dee's Dog House, in old train station.

Hey Circletrack-Being from Warren,Ohio maybe you've been to nearby New Castle,Pa.Your posting reminded me of all the great hot dog shops in New Castle.I patronized M and P Coney Island, the Post Office Lunch,Bill's,and the long gone White Front.Of course when you're in Pittsburgh, there is the Oakland Original Hot Dog Shop.I have yet to find a hot dog that matches up to those places but I'll try some of the suggestions posted here.Almost forgot the Brighton Hot Dog Shop in Beaver County.

Spring Training is coming---nothing like a cold beer and a hot dog at the old' ball park. Sam's Club does have a pretty good one too.

I used to go to the MP Coney Island in New Castle a couple of times each year. We would also frequent the Sharon Hot Dog shop and Coney Island in downtown Sharon, Pa. We had so many of these simple hot dog restaurants up in that area that I was shocked not to find many here. I thought they were everywhere.

It seems, though, that the ones that are around have a very elaborate menu with all kinds of crazy toppings. They just didn't make them that way were I was from.

Not saying that's a bad thing and I really do appreciate all the suggestions so far. Thank you!!!

Go to "Athens" in Spanish Springs. They have Zweigles Hot Dogs, Red and White, that are shipped in directly from Rochester NY. Make sure you also get the hot sauce which is also a Rochester specialty. Might as well wash it down with a Jenny Cream Ale from the Genesee brewery in Rochester.

Hey Circletrack, I'm from Warren and have been going to the Hot Dog Shop since 1954 when it was a hole in the wall. When I go back to visit it's one of my first stops for lunch

Some of you may recall that Dee-Dees Dog House setup shop in TV circa 2009. I was never there but "folks" tell me that it was too expensive for what they served, and consequently they closed in less than a year. On the other hand, Nathan's in Wal-Mart seemed to be doing very well for many years until Wal-Mart's raised their rent. I wonder if DDDH in Ocala is more affordable and that's why it's managed to stay alive. I know seniors are on a budget but I can't believe they don't enjoy a great hot dog if the price is right.

Same for me. I remember when they had that fire years back and had to close temporarily. It felt like an eternity.

We went ahead and just grilled up some dogs and topped them with Hormel chili last night. Was good enough to feed my cravings... for now.

You DO know what a hot dog is made from? All the "nasties" you trim away...

scarecrow1 12-06-2013 10:38 AM

Hide's Hotdogs in Liverpool N.Y. Serves Hauffman hotdogs and coneys (white hotdogs) the best ever.

Do we think that anyone reading this post does not know about the contents of Hot Dogs?

They taste soooo good like bacon does, like ice cream does....

Everything in moderation!!!

Check out Lena's in Silver Springs for a New England style dog served on traditional NE split top rolls!!! Also fantastic Onion Rings to chow down on!!!

Lena's is a NE style seafood / hot dog shack which is a second store to it's New Hampshire original.

...and I don't care that's it may not be the best for me... I make it up in other ways!!!

SAM's does have a good "dog" but they stopped offering chili sauce as a topping...BIG mistake.

Went to Brady's in Colony Shopping center this week for lunch and they have a Nathans Dog Special...2 dogs with fries and a soft drink for $5.99. They are the normal size dog but you can get onions and Chili/Cheese cost $1 extra.....was not bad

We used to go to Nathan's in Wal-Mart, and then maybe we'd shop there, but we'd really go just for the hot dogs and fries. Since they've closed up we've been looking for a replacement. This might work for us and it's close. Of course the beer at Beef O'Grady's would go very nicely too! So thank you.

logdog 12-06-2013 08:26 PM

Five Guys has a great split grilled sausage dog with whatever toppings you want. The stand in front of Home Depot has a good Italian sausage with grilled onions and peppers.

I agree about 5 Guys. Had never eaten there until I went to Brownwood and I tried their place down there. It was delicious.

Also the new World of Beer has a great, great bratwurst dog sauteed in onions and peppers in beer and served on a pretzel roll. It is utterly delicious. I've been back for it a few times.

But I know what you mean about those small dog places, we had many of them in Los Angeles and they had the most wonderful dogs and toppings ever. Very sloppy to eat, but sooooo good.

BTW, when I buy dogs, I always buy Kosher... Somewhat healthier and we know they are all beef.

Actually, it's Hebrew National...not Nathans.

And when I said "you know what's in it", I wasn't talking about fat...I was talking about veins and all the other nasty stuff that should get thrown away...but doesn't...it ends up in your hot dog... Now go enjoy.

Kosher is preparation, which animal, how the animal was killed, more than how "healthy" it is.
