Hugely celebrated here...but just to be on the safe side, if I were you I would go down to the square right now and save a seat.;) I had NOT realized until I moved here how much MORE the holiday is celebrated in the south. Costumes, a parade and King Cake...The squares will be hoppin. |
yes we have been to mardi Gras for many years
but we are coming down March 1st and wondering about the date so I can invite my cousins ahead of time...you know retirees need to plan stuff way ahead LOL

As you know that date is Tuesday March 4th in 2014, BUT if my memory serves me, it was celebrated either the weekend before or the weekend after here in The Villages last year. Does anyone remember? Laissez les bons temps rouler! |
It was celebrated the weekend before Ash Wednesday. As said, Ash Wednesday is beginning of Lent.
|
FWIW:
Last year it was celebrated in the villages on Feb 7 - N.O. began the celebration on Feb 8th. This year N.O. begins the celebration on Tuesday, Mar 4th |
There will be two Mardi Gras celebrations this year. At Spanish Springs on February 6 and at Lake Sumter on February 11.
We (Aloha 'O Ka Hula) will be dancing at each of these. Bill |

The Mardi Gras Celebrations at the Squares are always fun, and we hope that everyone on TOTV (especially you, Gracie) will come out and see us and give us a chance to meet you. "Laissez les bons temps rouler!" Bill |
Cajuns! call Tuesday March 4th in 2014, FAT Tuesday. If you ever get a chance, go to Mardi Gras, in New Orleans! you will have a great time!

It is called Fasnacht by the Germans, not sure of the spelling and sometimes Shrove Tuesday? in liturgy?. I just read where U.K. people call it Pancake day? When a lot of us fasted during lent, a LONG time ago, it was our big last hurrah for feasting. |

No Mardi Gras Celebration was listed on the Special Events Calendar that was given us by the Entertainment Department. In fact, this is the first year that the Entertainment Department has scheduled two Mardi Gras celebrations. Possibly, they will see how the two celebrations are received by Village residents and expand to all three squares in future years as they have done with the Tree Lighting Celebrations. This is speculation on my part as I don't presume to speak for the Entertainment Department. Bill |
wonder why they would have the celebrations a month before Fat Tuesday
that seems strange, Unless they dont want two big celebrations in one month O well ....I will be on a cruise in February thankssss |
Universal Studios in Orlando celebrates Mardi Gras BIG TIME! Great celebration there, parade, music, the works!

Since Mardi Gras is based on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday and it is a movable feast in the church calendar. Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the beginning of spring. And Ash Wednesday would be forty days before that. So Ash Wednesday last year was in February. Mardi Gras is March 4th THIS year all over the world. |
Thank you Graciegirl for explaining this. You saved me a lot of typing. Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday falls on my wife's (Carol) birthday this year. It will make for an interesting and fun day for us, obviously involving the appropriate festivities including culinary delights.
