Window Air Conditioners
I'm told these are not allowed. Has anyone "gotten away with" using one to stay cool waiting for central air to be repaired? Or run one on a generator during a power failure?

You were told right.

While waiting for a new AC, Chuck Farrell had a portable ac brought to use in our bedroom. They only work in small areas, unit stays inside house, they put hose in window will a special attachment. From the outside you had no idea it was there. However community watch stopped to tell us our scree was not in correctly

We have a 12,000 but floor unit that ducts out window with approx 6 inch adapter and have used it in emergency and have lent it out to neighbors
Amazon.com Very quiet |
You may be able to justify in an emergency situation, but generally, not allowed.

Iftemp was 95 and no ac working would certainly do something on a temporary basis.

Do what you must during an emergency and even if some bonehead reported you a simple explanation will get you off the hook. I had a portable unit that came with the house and it was useless. I have a 10,000 BTU window unit that I purchased just before Irma. It did the trick.

If you're in a CYV and the A/C is facing your yard I don't think it would be a big problem. I think don't allow them because they're a eye sore.

Before we got a Mitsubishi split unit for our lanai, I had thought about a floor unit like you see in motels. Low and unobtrusive and in back of the house. Most of the unit is inside. Just the vent shows.

By the time they told me to get rid of it A/C is fixed and the problem has gone away

A/C
I have seen a few In peoples garages, none around where I live but when driving to play golf have noticed a few mainly in the historic area. Don’t really recommend them. If you are having trouble getting your A/C fixed, that is the biggest problem. Most of the big A/C companies are pretty good. I would look into that first. Good luck.
