Phishing / Malware Texts

In addition to multiple spam calls to my cell phone daily, I'm now getting multiple texts directing me to click on links. For the last year most of them call me by a name that is not mine.

They say things like “Hey So-and-So – You've won a new iPhone! - click here” or “Your tablet has been compromised click here!”

The latest today said “Hey So-and-So – I am at your house!” Which disturbed me.

I have forwarded these to my carrier Verizon. And blocked all the originating numbers.

But what else can I do? I can change my number, of course, but that will be a minor PITA.

Put your phone on "do not disturb" EXCEPT for numbers in your contacts list.

Welcome to the 21st century.

For some reason my wife gets a lot more of these than I do.

We get zero texts or calls unless they are in our contacts. We have a cell just for contractors and those who we need to only speak to once or twice. Same for email accounts, we both have personal accounts for contacts only, and a general email for anyone else. OP turn off your location on cell phone, that will help

I have Robokiller app on my iphone. I get a call or text every once in awhile, but it helps for sure. That's why alot have gone to texting. And with texting, they can just automate it through the directory. . .

good luck

That works but can be dangerous if someone has an emergency and tries calling you from a hospital, ER, police station or any non-contact list number or that person has a friend or neighbor call you. Happened to me a few years ago with my father in south FL. I disabled that feature real quick.

One more option is the National Do Not Call Registry from the Federal Trade Commission,… fairly convenient, easy & free to sign up — I don’t know that’s it’s 100% fool proof as I still occasionally get one here or there, but not many.

I tried to copy the link but it wouldn’t let me — so I would google “National Do Not Call Registry (or) Registration”

Respectfully, D Burns

Good way to miss important calls.

Have it go to voice mail and if it is spam, block the call number.

I sometimes get calls from employees of companies I use for maintenance and enhancements to my property. They might tell me they are on the way or that they will be late. Such are important calls that I’d hate to miss.

Robokiller

I use Robokiller and it blocks over 90% of spam calls and texts.

If you have an iPhone, go to settings>phone> silence unknown callers. If the caller is not in your contacts, it goes straight to voicemail. Must have your IOS up to date.

Have found do not call to be basically useless. No or little enforcement so spammers do not pay attention to it.
