Looking for a good retina and low vision doctor

My wife has eye problems and now that we live in the Villages she needs a retina and low vision specialist. I have heard that some are not that good and that people have had problems with doctors in general. So, I am hoping that someone knows of a really good retina specialist and another doctor that specializes in low vision.

I do not have a specific doctor but really like the Ocala Eye Care Practice and know that their doctors specialize.

Dr. Samy, Ocala Eye

When we first moved here and decided to use Ocala Eye, I researched all of the doctors in their practice. When I called for an appointment, I specified that I wanted Dr. Samy (major impressive education profile). I was told that Dr. Samy was strictly a retina specialist receiving referrals from other practices throughout the state. We selected another doctor in the practice and have been happy with Ocala Eye.

Four years ago, I developed a torn retina. I found out first hand that just how impressive Dr. Samy is. He's no nonsense, straight talk, and I had excellent results from him. I would highly recommend him.

On the down side, you will need a referral to see Dr. Samy. You can't just call his office and make an appointment. Being a patient of Ocala Eye definitely gets you to him quickly. On a Wednesday afternoon, I saw a bright flash of light, followed by many floaters. A call to Ocala Eye had me in there that afternoon. The next day, I was in Ocala having laser surgery by Dr. Samy.

Good luck.

RE: Ocala Eye

Interesting. We have already meet with Dr. Samy and were not impressed with his personal skills (bed side maner). We did find him informative but very clinical in his approach. That is why we are looking for another retinal specialist. We are still seeing a doctor in the Boston Ma area that we really like and is a real caring person. People need information and the facts but they also need to know there is hope. Our doctor in Boston and my internet research indicates that a cure for AMD is in the works and only a few years away, all though Dr. Samy does not believe that.

I attempted to get a doctor for the same situation from Oclaa Eye and they were very unresponsive. I called Lake Eye in the Sharon Morse building and have been seeing Dr Holman there since. I am very satisfied with him and he regularily checks my retinopathy. I have reommended him here on TOTV in an earlier thread.

Check out Dr. Zeini. at "Eyes" Offices at Southern Trace, Mulberry Grove and La Plaza Grande. He is going to do my catarac surgery in a week or so and my wife has been seeing him for an eye problem. I was impressed with him and he has 37 years experience. You can't buy experience. Best of luck to you.

Thanks everyone for the input. We have another appointment with Dr. Samy and will see how that goes. If we still are not happy we will start checking into your suggestions. The thing is my wife's retina specialist in Boston (Dr. Hughes) who is very good in all ways suggested Dr. Samy, so we will wait.

I absolutely agree with you 100% on Dr. Samy's bedside manner and personality. Very low marks on both. However, I, personally, wasn't interested in socializing with the man. With a torn retina, my concern was preserving the vision in my eye.

I had numerous questions when I first met with him, and he took the time to matter-of-factly answer each one. He showed me models, he drew me pictures, and he minced no words in telling me that I needed surgery immediately, if not sooner. He then worked me into his schedule that day.

Without a doubt, if you're wanting a doctor with personality and bedside manner, you'll need to look elsewhere.
