We only need one but we need a Mexican restaurant that actually makes Mexican food. So far there is none.

one must first understand mexican food versus tex mex. we have tex mex. not sure how a real mexican place will do, not about tacos and nachos.

If it was a REAL Mexican restaurant, the menu would only be in Spanish, and they would only take pesos, no? :icon_wink:

From the title of this thread I thought a New Mexican restaurant was coming but discovered it would be a new Mexican one. Having lived and traveled all over the US Southwest, the Yucatan, Baja California, both coasts and the interior of Mexico I have discovered about all "Mexican" food has in common is that usually chiles are used in the preparation of some of the dishes. The chiles and vegetables used vary considerably, depending upon location. Many ingredients are not obtainable outside a particular region.

BTW I have never, ever eaten a great Mexican meal outside an area in which the proper fresh ingredients are obtainable and the locals know how to prepare them.

Today I plan to enjoy a carne adovada burrito, refritos, a couple of sopaipillas with honey, and a chile relleno at a local restaurant called Los Cuates (the twins) since I am visiting in Albuquerque, NM. When in Rome..... and all that.

I am so glad others agree. The reality is that although some ingredients are hard to come by. We lived in Mexico for almost 10 years and now my husband cooks Mexican food that IS Mexican food. True you can't get everything but I would estimate 90% can be found. The most difficult thing is getting real tortilla. Wish someone would start a fresh tortilla business.

They must have tortilla factories in Florida. Don't they sell wheat, hard taco shells, corn and/or blue corn tortillas in the grocery stores in The Villages?

How about tamales, carne adovada and chorizo? These are all basics.

Real tortilla is made of corn and never hard unless it is a week old :) In Mexico, you go to the super or the mercado and they are fresh every day. They are a completely different animal than the flour tortilla.

The closest thing to a Mexican restaurant is in the back of a Mexican grocery store on 441 going towards Leesburg. Tongue, tripe and goat tacos... really good...
