Ignore feature
 

I just read the post from the administrator reminding us of TOTV rules. In it, we were reminded to use the "ignore" feature if we found someone's opinions "rub us the wrong way". I have never used that feature and likely never will. I don't understand the need for it, personally. It seems to me that if I find a particular poster offensive I am perfectly capable of ignoring them without blocking their post from my view. It seems like a feature designed to help one do what they are unable to do themself, which would be to simply pass over another's post without reading it. I used to participate in the politics board on occasion and despite disagreeing with certain posters on virtually everything, I would never dream of ignoring them, as I still learned from the give and take, and even found some of the most offensive posters (to me) to have interesting and informative takes once in a while. I recently got into a debate with another poster on this site, but in general, like what that poster has to say about most subjects and wouldn't think of ignoring all their posts because we strongly disagree about one particular issue. Maybe someone can enlighten me about the value of the ignore feature that I have overlooked.

I agree with you. However, maybe some posters or readers want to limit their stress levels by ignoring some posters who "like to rock the boat"??? It's nice that they have that option.

Probably. I don't expect many responses as most people have me on ignore! :boxing2::boxing2:

We agree that a user can easily ignore them without putting them on their 'ignore list', but with all the different personalities we deal with it is an option that works for and helps certain users to have a better experience while they are on the site. We wanted to simply educate users on what the options are and everyone can choose individually how they want to have their experience be while on TOTV.

I guess it is for people who feel that they are being harassed or otherwise overly irritated by an individual. Cyber bullying has become an epidemic I guess.

I'm glad the "ignore" feature is available but I doubt I would find the need to use it for a lot of these reasons Ed stated.

I also agree that I would not have the need for the Ignore feature. Some people will use it for the reasons that the Admin. stated.

I personally enjoy a little verbal jousting here on TOTV as long as it is civil and not turning into an attack on a person for introducing a different point of view. A different point of view may open a closed mind.

There is never a shortage of opinions here in The Villages and on TOTV.

Your not missing anything as I have learned to ignore posters who seem to have an ax to grind. I "don't let anybody rent space in my head". :smiley:

As long as one, "agrees to disagree" respectfully, everything is cool.

Joe I should think the space in your head would demand far too high a rent for most TOTVers. :icon_wink:

The biggest problem is when two people with opposite views both try to rent space in the other's head. One or both may be overt, one may be very subtle.

I'd rather have people be honest, speak their minds, and be done with it. Have the courage of your convictions; put your logic to the test and see if it holds any water, assuming you have some logic and not just emotional bluster.

I think the best arguments are when two people attack each other's ideas rather than attack the other's character. Very few, in my opinion, are able to do it.

Why I use the "ignore" botton
 

I have found that the large majority of posters share good insight and great info on The Talk of the Villages. I have also found there to be quite a few posters who appear to have a need to constantly pontificate about everything and/or quickly and rudely dismiss the questions or comments of others. By using the "ignore" bottom, I do not have to waste time scrolling past the comments of posters who fit into the latter category.

I am very glad there is an "ignore" botton.

I once put two posters on ignore. I felt they were very sarcastic, called people names, and otherwise had an in-your-face bad attitude.

However, embarrassingly enough, I couldn't stand it when they posted to a thread I was following, and instead of their post showing, there would be a little message from TOTV stating that their post was deleted due to being on my ignore list. Then the next poster would answer them, and I wouldn't know what they were talking about.

So I de-ignored them. As it turns out, one of them must have been having a bad month or something, because the subsequent posts were quite innocuous. And the other one... well, haven't seen anything from him since the de-ignoring (would you call that de-ignorance??).

I haven't usedthe ignore feature since. But I understand what mbrown is talking about. (And yes, welcome to the forum!)
