Recent burglary in Charlotte

The following information was sent to me regarding the burglary in Charlotte :

I have a little bit of an update on the recent burglary. The car seen in the driveway at the time of the burglary was a black or dark KIA Soul, one of those small box shaped cars. If you see such a car parked in the area and it does not belong to your neighbor, call the sheriff's office,352-728-6909 or 911 and tell them you think there is a burglary in progress. They are only taking gold (they test it and leave behind non-gold jewelry) and cash. They mostly look in your bedrooms. Keep a TV or radio on when you are not home and have lights on at night. If someone comes to your door soliciting for anything, call the sheriff or Community Watch,352-753-0550. Solicitation is not allowed in the Villages and they may be checking the neighborhood to see who is not home. As soon as I receive more information on alarm systems or more news about burglaries, I will pass it along.

Feel free to pass this email along to your neighbors.

I'd like to know the source of the "no soliciting" rule. I think it's just a sticker in the gate pedestals.

What was the date and time of this burglary? Can you be more specific as to which street it was on?

Callahan Street Jan 12 around 10 am

Somebody forwarded that email to me yesterday. The email was dated 1/15 and regards the 1/12 burglary. I think this email was also posted on TOTV back then. So, this is NOT a new event.

While I was aware of the event, there are some particulars in Madelaine's post that I didn't know about.

Thanks for posting Madelaine!

It seems the bug spray man and the lawn fertilizer guy did not get the message about the “no soliciting rule”. Buy a house and they will be at your door before the moving van is out of sight and it will be a rep from every brand.

We will definately look out for that vehicle. It shouldn't be hard to spot.

Be sure to check out any bug company or lawn service with Seniors vs. Crime to see if they have a history of being bad guys or not. NEVER pay up front for services "in the future".

Thank you for your kind post! I think most of us are aware of this particular burglary, but I don't suppose most of us had heard that there "may" be a boxy shaped Kia involved!

The more information we have about the circumstances surrounding an event like this, the better prepared we are to protect our own homes.

I had heard that there was "one of those boxy shaped foreign cars" involved, but now we know the color and kind, so that's good information.

Am I wrong, or was this burglary traced back to the couple's housekeeper somehow?

Door to door soliciting...

We have lived in the village of Charlotte for 18 months. There have been numerous door to door sales people. The last was a guy selling meat out of the back of a pickup truck. I told him to leave my property immediately and called the Sumter Co Sheriff. They said they had been trying to catch him but had not been able to. He was dirty looking, had numerous tattoos, and appeared to be on meth. I would not doubt he is only casing houses.

And selling meat. He has been doing it for years. He is not very...um....pretty.

Ya never know. Better to be safe than sorry. I NEVER buy anything from a door to door person. I just say "No Thank you" and close the door.

Contractors that are legit DO target new homes and watch for signs of moving in so they can get your business on lawn service, water softeners, etc.etc. They are USUALLY more annoying than dangerous.

But go with your gut feelings.

For my future benefit, how do you tell if a person is on meth?

Big M on his T-shirt?
