GPS

We were at TV in January looking at properties and spent most of our time looking at the map. Would a GPS be helpful for a new Villager?

Re: GPS

All depends on how recent the maps are in the GPS. I have Garmin City Navigator Vers. 8.0 (© 2006) installed and it still takes me up Buena Vista to SR 42 but doesn't know how to navigate a "round about" (traffic circle) that was built in 1998 near Springdale. I live north of CR 466 and from Wildwood, my GPS can't find the way home. The roads south of CR 466 are pretty much not mapped very well yet by NAVTEQ. Even the latest $5 Villages Map has some errors. Do what women do - stop and ask directions!

Short answer: NO!

Re: GPS

I have a Mio. Love the thing (and it does understand the round abouts ... sorta, anyway). Gets me anywhere I want to go in TV IF it is in the older part (441/27). I did just get an update but haven't installed it yet. So, if it has the some of the newer stuff around 466, my answer would be yes. Otherwise, no.

Re: GPS

Believe it or not the GPS program VZNavigator which is Verizons' add on GPS service for GPS enabled wireless phones worked fabulously in TV. I have used it to navigate all over Central Florida, South Florida, Northern California, The Greater Boston, MA area & the Berkshire Mountains of Western MA.

recently purchased a garmin nuvi 600, unit recognizes all except village of duval, of course, that is the village where I will reside. absolute necessity for a newby to navigate with NO chance of being lost!

Re: GPS

The Garmin Nuvi is by far the best.( I have the 350). Its recent map update (2008) released in July 2007 includes many villages south of 466. It does not show Morse Blvd or Buena Vista connecting with 466A, but it does include 466A. The city address you need to use to locate your property is Lady Lake Fl 32162. I highly recommend GArmin Nuvi and you can get this unit on line for about $330-350.

;) >>>> Do what women do - stop and ask directions!
Oh no !~ this would be a last resort.
Only kidding I did this last year ( I think it was last year it might have been the year before) when my wife made me stop for directions.

I also have a Garmin Nuvi 350 and when I had the 2007 maps that came with it, it worked great north of 466 including getting around the circles. It didn't have anything south of 466. I updated it for free to the 2008 maps and it now includes south of 466 and if I can remember including Deval. I'm in NY now and have only checked a few streets South of 466 to make sure the update did include them but the area seemed well covered.
I highly recommend the Nuvi 350 > great directions, small to fit in your shirt pocket when you leave the car and easy to use. Love the Text to voice feature that the Nuvi 200s don't have. This feature not only tells you to turn right in 100 feet but to turn right in 100 feet and gives the street or highway name (not always in agreement with the sign on the turn but a feature I really like and recommend)

Re: GPS - OURS WORKS

Hi,

We purchased a Magellan 4040 model, purchased it the beginning of this year (I think) and it works perfectly in TV, both North and South of 466.

We would be lost in TV without it. Just put in the address and away we go.

Re: GPS

Thanks for all the info. I will certainly go out and get myself one, or maybe Santa will bring one. I can usually read a map, but my sense of direction is bad without a compass, or OnStar

Re: GPS

dadspet, how did you update the maps in your Nuvi, I think I may need to do this. The Nuvi I just bought last week looks like it has the same maps in it as the one we purchased for my son a while back. If I go into maps and more info it says map info is city navigator lower 48 states NT 2008. Can u tell if this is the same version as your new download?

MM, is that your bird in the tree? Thanks

I also downloaded the new maps from Garim for my Nuvi 350. My Software is entitled City Navigator North America NT 2008 which includes Canada and Alaska. Specifically I am using Nuvi 350 Software Version 4.60. You can find your software version by going to "settings", then "system"..and then hit "about" on the bottom of the screen.

You can call Garmin ( try 1-800-800-1020 or 913-397-8200) and ask if your Nuvi has the latest software and they will ask when you bought the system. If you have the receipt that you bought it after july or so this year, they will ask you to send a copy to them and they will send out an updated map disk. Very easy to download and update.

Good Luck!

Re: GPS

I received a DVD from Garmin to do the update. It took over an hr to update my NUVI from my Laptop with this DVD. Version is City Navigator North America NT 2008and it was released by Garmin in July for the NUVI 3xx and 6xx. The 2xx Nuvi may have had a version of 2008 earlier then the version for the 350 you would have to check with Garmin on that.
