The comic strip "Blondie"
 

I enjoy reading some of the comic strips and Blondie is one of them. What I keep wondering is: Where did Elmo come from? Very often he's there talking to Dagwood, planting ideas in his mind. Often, he's playing games on the living room floor and starts talking to Dagwood about something. Doesn't that kid have a home or other kids his age to play with?

Did you ever wonder about him?

Elmo Tuttle, just a kid in the neighborhood.

I believe that I recall a " story-line " many decades ago . Elmo was explained as a next door neighbor kid and as I recall an only child .

Thanks, I guess I missed that "story-line" as I didn't always keep up with the comics years ago.

Elmo Tuttle: A a pesky neighborhood kid who often asks Dagwood to play (whom he calls "Mr. B"), but sometimes annoys him. His last name was originally "Fiffenhauser."

Ha! He has a last name, I like that. Elmo Tuttle, has a good sound to it. Pesky and annoying, indeed.

Maybe he is a relative of the Tuttle's of Orange County Choppers. Nah, never mind.

Elmo is Dagwood's secret love child. It's no secret that the magic has over the years leaked out of the Blondie-Dagwood marriage. There's a reason why her seat in the living room has its back to him, and why Blondie has in recent years spent more time at her catering business than she has catering to the hapless, quirky, high-strung man she married.
Might Dagwood have also dipped his toe in other waters? And might Elmo be the result of one of those quiet encounters? Little wonder, then, Blondie is absent in most strips when Elmo pays a visit. She doesn't want to reminded of the fact that her husband strayed, and, worse still, created a new drain upon the already-strained family finances.

Yes! Good thinking. I did notice that Blondie is never around when Elmo is there. And she does sit with her back to him in the living room. I just couldn't figure out why. I like your explanation....Dagwood has a dark side; he's a philanderer.
