ideas, please - water-proofing the lanaii
 

We really don't want to close in our lanai and make it another room, we like the lanai being a lanai. With that said, tho, we had a terrible time last summer with the rain coming in the screens and wetting everything. Our clever idea (not) was to install those inexpensive roll down shutters we had on our old homes lanai to block the sun a bit. Well...naturally, when it rains its windy, and this didn't work. Any ideas that anyone else has seen or done, aside from just closing the room in. I've heard of other (very expensive) electric roll down shutters, but not sure we wanna go that route either. HELP!! Am I missing something we can do without selling a grandchild???

A neighbor of ours just had his lanai glassed in with sliding doors that go from top to bottom. The doors open very wide and even stack in the middle thus giving him the best of both. Plenty of air flow and protection from the elements.

Our lanai has screens with plexiglas (? Or something like that) slider windows. It works well for us, nice and airy with the windows open and watertight when the rains come. Don't think they could have been that expensive, though I don't know for sure because they were already installed when we bought our pre-owned home.

We have a large plastic trunk that you can get at Sams and we put all our seat cushions in it if it is going to rain. Water will not hurt the plastic wicker. Like you we do not want windows... we like open air Lani

We had the same problem with sun and rain. After installing the sun shades, we can use the lanai in all weather. The way the shades are installed, the wind will not blow them open. The rain will go through the shades either.

These are not your cheapest option, but the incredibly well.

Yeah...kinda like a dock box. Had one of those in old house, but I hate the table getting wet and even the chairs w/o cushions, and we have a rug down out there. Thanks for the answer, tho. Appreciate the thought.

Thanks all. I do have someone coming out for an estimate for sliding windows out there. I just know with everything else we've had to do to a new home, they might be too much for us to consider...especially at property tax time...haha. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

We made curtains out of canvas dropcloths!! Put a rod up, bought those round things with clips and hung them up. Perfect
