Modem Replacement?

Am trying to get rid of rented Comcast modem. Modem from Comcast is a Arris model #TM502G.

Can I replace it with Motorola SB5101? Can I replace it with anything- even picked up at Walmart?

Thanks so much!!!

I would try a chat with Comcast (under Contact me) and see if they can give you a list of modems that will work with Comcast or point to a web page at their site.

I found this link at Comcast with a list of modems:

I think the Arris modem number you gave can handle Comcast voice (phone), as well as internet. We are just now retiring our Motorola SB5101 which we'd used for years for internet only. Comcast offered us a good deal for both internet and phone, but our Motorola modem only works for internet/TV. We are renting Comcast's Arris modem for a few months to see if we like their phone. If we do, we'll make plans to buy one.

You can view their accepted modems on their website. I googled "Modems accepted by Comcast" or something like that to get to the proper page. Apparently, the SB5101 is considered old technology now and will eventually have to be replaced anyway.

Thank you zcaveman for the list. Also thank you Carla. I am planning on using the modem just for internet. I had a TV in the guest room and internet through Comcast. Last bill went from $59.61 to this month $74.57. Guest room TV only get used maybe one a year- so cancelled that. Now want to won modem. Thank you both again!

It is best to go to your internet providers website or call them to see the compatible list of modems. It is the surefire way to avoid complications. Let us know if you need any help.
