Codys at Sumter Landing

We purchased gift certificates for our neighbors because we love Codys and the $20.00 incentive was a plus.
Unfortuanately the $20.00 certificate given as an incentive had a expiration date. When we called and asked if they would honor the certificate after the expiration date they said NO!!

We will definitely frequent a different restaurant.

Don't most restaurant certificates have an expiration date?

BarryRX 02-28-2014 04:07 PM

Most discount coupons have an expiration date, but gift certificates are very different from those discount coupons we find in the newspaper. I was under the impression that most states had passed a law saying that gift certificates cannot expire within 5 years of issuance. Was your gift certificate older than 5 years? If I give a restaurant $20 for a gift certificate, they have my $20. Even if prices go up in the restaurant, I would just get less food for my $20.

keithwand 02-28-2014 04:13 PM

Are you saying the gift certificate is/ was good but the incentive to purchase the gift certificate expired?
2 totally different things.
Was there a expiration date given?
How much time was given to use it?
Might be wrong to blame Cody's.

If the expiration date was printed on the incentive certificate I can't see how it was Cody's fault.

The certificate that expired was the one that they give you as an incentive to buy gift certificates for Christmas gifts. The expiration date is clearly printed on the card. I know the gift cards you bought at Bone Fish were buy $100.00 and get a $20.00 card for you to use with a expiration date. I am sure Cody's was the same type of deal. Our Bone Fish incentive expired Feb. 9. We used it on the 9th.

After re-reading the OP, I think you're right. It sounds like they purchased gift certificates for friends, and those gift certificates are still good. As an incentive for purchasing the gift certificates, they received a coupon worth $20 that had and expiration date on it. If that's true, then that expiration date was part of a contract that both agreed on, and if they let it expire then that's regrettable, but not Cody's fault. I originally thought the gift certificates had expired, but it sounds like I was wrong.

We did the same thing. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention and just today looked at the $20 gift cert and saw that it had expired. My bad. Cant blame Codys for your and my own mistake. I knew when we bought the gift cards that it had an expiration. If you choose to go to a different restaurant it is your prerogative but go for the right reason.

When we were asked if we wanted to purchase a gift certificate for Cody's that came with an incentive certificate, the waiter told us if we did buy we could use the incentive one on our dinner right then and there.

It does sound from what you wrote that you knew the incentive had an expiration date.

I have been known to stick the $10 coupons from Harry's Seafood Grill on my refrigerator and let them go past the expiration dates. I chalk this up to my lack of attention to some detail and just wait for the next coupon to arrive in the mail.

I do not blame Harry's for not accepting an expired coupon nor should you blame Cody's for not accepting an expired incentive.

Smile at your mistake and try not to do it again.

If they would honor it after the expiration date, why would they waste their time putting an expiration date on it?

Not sure how it's BS. The certificate was like any coupon with an expiration date. Essentially the OP entered into an agreement with the restaurant that he would receive $20 worth of dining within a certain period if he purchased the gift certificates. Cody's complied with every facet of the agreement. The OP failed to use his benefit within the agreed time period. How much leeway should Cody's give? A week? A month? A year? Unlimited? If they do it for one person, what about the other guy who forgot the expiration date?

I see this is your first post. :welcome: to TOTV.

I have to agree to disagree respectfully. It would have been a lot easier to throw to certificate in the garbage pail and not aggravate yourself. I cut coupons and throw out any expired ones, as I know they will not be honored. It is what it is.

Sorry you will miss the two for one Fajita night, on every Wednesday. You will automatically save you about $12. A lot of bang for the buck!!!

We had the same deal, and by our own mistake, let the incentive coupon expire. We told our server about it who suggested we speak to the manager that night. We spoke to him, and he allowed us to use the coupon even though it was expired. We have found that most of the time if you ask to speak to the manager in person, you will get farther with your request. They still might say "no", but it is a little harder to say "no" to a customer's face than over the phone. Plus , we always are polite and respectful. (That is not directed to the OP because I have no idea who you are, but saying the old honey catches more flys thing)
