Racing Golf Carts

Today's Daily Sun: "Competitors zip through Villages in an amazing race".

I'm all for having fun, but organizing a golf cart race on public roads and golf cart paths is dangerous and irresponsible.

An event such as this would be better held on a closed circuit, such as the polo fields.

It would be just like NASCAR, single file racing but rather than 200mph it would be 19mph. Be still my heart.

...except that a NASCAR track doesn't have Stop signs, two-way traffic and pedestrians

I note that the event was supported by Villages Recreation. Not a great idea for them to get involved in something which perpetuates the myth that golf carts are "toys for adults" rather than potential killing machines.

Today's paper also has an article on the Villages first golf cart fatality of 2014.

I thought it was a great idea. fun and safe.

My thoughts exactly. What were they thinking? :agree:

For those that don't watch "The Amazing Race" on TV every Sunday night, it is more like a scavenger hunt where instead of picking up something at the required stop, the contenstents have to do some sort of task before they can proceed. So for those who are visualizing a NASCAR type of race where the golf carts are flying around The Villages at breakneck speed, rest easy.

Thank you for clarifying, SIRE1

It was the headline "Competitors zip through Villages" that had me concerned.

I was one of of these a year or so ago in The Villages with the St. Charles Club. The organizers had figured out the time length it would take to do the course at 20 mph. If teams came in under that time, it would mean that they sped and were disqualified. No problem - and it was a lot of fun.

...though I don't normally make the mistake of believing what is in the newspapers.

I think Mrs Fox must be slipping me decaf.

We had bought our tickets to the Amazing Golf Cart Race as we thought it would be great fun; however, head colds prevailed and we were not up to it. We turned our tickets back in at Churchill early in the morning. We read about it in the Daily Sun and it sounded like it would have been a blast. We did realize that we WOULD NOT BE RACING 19/20 mph other golf carts. Fortunately, we are not cowboys/show-offs and look forward to participate when the opportunity arises again.
