A Villager was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence

lets be careful out there and do not drive your car or cart after one too many-Remember the happy hour 2/4/1 and one more is too many ---- information taken from the other newspaper today

the only surprise is why it does not happen more often given the volume flow of booze in TV.

Do the police ever do DWI checkpoints here? We have them frequently in Rochester. With the amount of drinking done here it would certainly make sense.

This is a town of around 100,000 residents. The very small number of DUI tickets given out leads me to think that it is NOT a big problem here. I have not observed many in my 4+ years here nor have I seen drunken rantings and ravings at any of the bars or town squares.

Police seem to do a lot more ticketing of speeders in cars or carts than for DUI.

There are probably more designated drivers available here for Seniors than elsewhere. I wonder what the AA numbers are for people around the Villages? In my own case, I do not drink so often wind up the designated driver in our party. Moreover, I disliked being drunk nor the taste of almost all booze. Getting my four degrees, for instance, I did drink socially while in law school as well as while getting my MA in Librarianship but rarely got inebriated. This drunkenness did happen once or twice at the University of Denver and I felt like such a fool the next morning, that now alcohol does not appeal to me.

the funny thing is.....this wouldn't even be news anywhere but here.....think of another American city with 100,000 people.....one drunk driver? Hilarious!

Be happy it's so safe here! I am !:pepper2::pepper2::pepper2::pepper2::pepper2:

All the booze consumed here doesn't just disappear when people start home.

I think we all know there are many more drunk drivers out there. They just don't get caught on the cart paths and there is very little done to catch them anywhere.

The guy they actually caught must have really done a number.. :ho:

How does one get a DUI on the golf cart trail or was he on the street ?

DianeM 03-15-2014 04:13 PM

DUI's are given out everywhere. Not sure I get why it's a big deal in TV? Are Villagers above reproach or suddenly incapable of doing something foolish?

Abster 03-15-2014 04:23 PM

I'm not sure why this would even be a topic. Lordy, I've seen a lot of alcohol flowing around here. I know all these old people don't walk or rely on a designated driver after getting sloshed. Someone made a poor decision and was in the wrong place at the wrong time. In a community where so many pride themselves on being so much better than the rest, I'm shocked someone didn't stop this person from using such poor judgment.

I have not seen a big problem with drunk drivers in TV. I do see a problem if drivers were randomly stopped and ticketed. Can you imagine the impact on the town squares and bars if everyone decided to stay home rather than risk getting pulled over. If it were a problem it would be different but how many accidents and incidents have occurred? I do see a need for a service that would provide a ride home for anyone unable to drive. It would make a great business for a couple...one drives the person home in their car or cart and the other would follow. This way the person drinking too much would get safely home and their car/cart would be there for them.

On the surface, that sounds like a good business. Chances are that the insurance risks would be too great to be practical, though.

Also, it reminds me of the story of the drunk in the taxi and he asks the driver if there is room for a 12 pack of beer and a large pizza in the front seat. The driver says "sure". The passenger barf. Want that in your car?

Chi-Town 03-15-2014 08:49 PM

Treaure Island has a service like that. Just give the guy a tip. Without your car, though.

Bonanza 03-15-2014 10:57 PM

So many times when my husband and I are driving home any time after about 9:00 p.m., we laugh because we are sure the reason no one is on the road is because they are either asleep in bed or drunk!

That's probaly not too far from the truth.

jblum315 03-16-2014 03:58 AM

With 18 AA meetings in TV every week (and all filled up) you know there are a lot of serious problem drinkers here. Let's just hope that most of them choose a designated driver to get them home.
