Geminid Meteor Shower - Spectacular
The earth is now entering the path of the Geminids and 2007 is expected to be a spectacular year for this meteor shower. Peak viewing for meteors is expected Dec 13 at about 2AM ET which is abouth zenith.....but the meteors can now be seen at about 20 - 30 per hour. At peak viewing time it is expected that you could see over 120 meteors per hour.
Look east to north east after 8PM. The radiant eminates from Gemini and will gradually move from the horizon to directly overhead in about 5 hours. No moon tonight and on Dec 13, the moon will be at fat crescent which should make for good viewing, weather permitting. If we're lucky, we might see a few "earth grazers" on the 13th.....long streaks across the entire sky. Thought I give y'all a "heads up"....pun intended. Enjoy. |
Re: Geminid Meteor Shower - Spectacular
Hi JohnZ.
We would love to see the Meteor Shower. Every time we have one the nights are cloudy. Wish you could do something about that. Thanks for posting the info though. Hyacinth Bucket |
Re: Geminid Meteor Shower - Spectacular
Thanks for the reminder! We used to lay out sleeping bags and watch the Perseid Showers in California. It was such a fun thing to do.
Wonder if we'd get in trouble for laying out here to watch since there really aren't back yards? |
Re: Geminid Meteor Shower - Spectacular
Hmmm no problem being awake & outside at O'Dark30 to watch meteor shower thanks to ms "Take me outside now" Sadie. Always loved it too standing on the bow of a cruise ship at night. Most always see something streaking thru the atmosphere. Try it the next time you're on one.

Re: Geminid Meteor Shower - Spectacular
Hi Donna,
Will you have clear skies for the meteor shower? I do not think we will - clouds. Early predictions for our area are the usual - sleet and up to 8 inches of snow. Hope you have a better weather prediction than we have. Hyacinth Bucket |
Re: Geminid Meteor Shower - Spectacular
Thanks, JohnZ for the reminder. Unless I am having a sleepless night, I am hardly ever up a 2am though not even on New Year's Eve.

Snow and sleet are predicted to start after the Thursday morning commute and continue into Thursday night. Up to a foot of snow possible, according to the National Weather Service. Preliminary prediction is three to six inches arriving Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. All of Pennsylvania and New England will be blanketed. The snow will be here to stay at least into next week. http://www.millan.net/minimations/sm...crysmiley1.gifhttp://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/gaah.gif http://www.millan.net/minimations/sm...snoshovelf.gif |
