New England Road Trip

I'm starting to gather info. for a New England road trip next year. Does anyone have any "must see, must do" things to check out? Specific routes, side trips. What time of year is best? -It won't be snow time. And I really don't care for museums either.

Best time to visit New England is in the Fall at the height of the foliage season. Good viewing of color would be to drive the Mowhawk Trail in Ma. If you are looking for casino's and shows, CT has two. If you are looking to see rugged coast line, that Arcadia National Park in Maine is an awesome adventure. You can even take a working trip on a lobster boat. Cape Cod in MA would be excellent in the fall because most of the tourists have go home. Take a boat trip from Hyannis to Nantucket. This is a full day trip but worth the effort. There is so much to see and do in NE and I hope these few suggestions will help.

Should you choose the Cape Cod area, stop off in Newport, RI. The quintessential New England seaport town. Don't miss a tour of "The Breakers" one of Newport's summer cottages. America's Cup Boulevard will remind you of the Villages..

I love the idea of boat trips ,but they have to be handicap accessible. My wife has limited mobility. A working lobster boat sounds awesome.

Any websites to view??

Pete, not to sure what you mean by limited mobility. Many of the historic places that have been mentioned are not always accessible if you are unable to walk steps.

A town like Rockport, Ma in many places is relatively flat. I know Philadelphia is not on your route, but in many ways, Philly is a Boston without many of the hills.

There are areas around the parks in Boston that are relatively flat.

I do not know if you know this, but Microtel, has won numerous awards for there handicap accessible rooms. Not only are they handicap accessible, but they are an inexpensive chain.

If you would like, please email with more info and I can see what I can find out for you.

Pete, a must see and lots of fun in Boston is the Duck Tours ... they use WW II amphibious landing vehicles to tour Boston ... both on land and on water. I really don't know if they are handicap accessible, but the web site is www.BostonDuckTours.com

Hope you enjoy your tour of New England. We have lived here 24 years and we love it (most of the time). Newport mansions are a real treat, as is seeing the town itself. There are bus tours too. I think if you did a search of Newport RI, you could find lots of information. We stayed in a B&B and had a great visit.

In Boston, if you enjoy pasta, don't miss the North End. We try to get down there once or so during the good months and walk around and then try one of the great family-owned Italian restaurants ... always a treat.

Have a safe trip.

Pete,

you've received a lot of good information in the posts here. Here is more.

If you travel Interstate 95 in CT, plan a stop at Mystic Seaport. Great maritime heritage, old whaling ships, and you can book a half or full day on a Windjammer, the Mystic Whaler, including a lobster dinner on board. Try their website mysticwhaler.com and for Cape Cod, try the website: cape cod and the islands.com.

You and the Mrs. will enjoy New England. Good luck and have a great trip. Caution, don't spend all your wampum at the indian casinos.

Don't miss the White Mountains of NH or you will miss the most beautiful parts of NE. Drive to the top of Mt Washington, take a paddle wheel steamer on the big lake. If you do go in October, the White Mountians is one of 2 places in the world with the most vivid colors. Also has great food, great shopping, and is low cost. Start with this site.
