Is there a bakery in THE VILLAGES that bakes poppy seed swirl bread?
 

Is there a bakery within The Villages, or nearby, that bakes authentic poppy seed swirl bread? It's considered a "tea bread" or "coffee bread" type item. Rolled up jelly roll fashion. Not overly sweet at all; just great with a cup of coffee.

A little bit of nostalgia lately caused me to locate some via mail order.......in addition to the explanation on below link:

Recently, someone on T.O.T.V. was searching for a supplier of poppy seeds.


We were super busy at the time, however, I meant to ask if they were going to make a poppy seed swirl bread for the upcoming holidays.


Both of us recall, as children, our moms getting them at either the Jewish deli in our neighborhood or the Polish bakery (New Jersey). Have not seen any in Vermont. Wondering if we'd be luckier in Florida.


Nostalgic for some of the old poppy seed swirl.......one month ago I purchased some from Polana in Chicago.


The Polish mail order was quick; the Makowiec poppy seed swirl bread was great.


Yesterday, some more arrived......this time from Zabar's Jewish Deli in Manhattan, courtesy of :


Gertel's Uptown Inc. in Brooklyn, New York.
It is absolutely DELICIOUS. Smaller than the Polish "Polana" company's, but excellent.


Both had abundant poppy seeds; this one with honey and figs as I'm trying to read the tiny label. Polana's had some raisins......but both had abundant poppy seeds. Both just perfect with a cup of coffee.

Again, a nostalgic visit back to our childhoods...............miss that authentic Jewish Rye bread as well.......and half sour pickles.


Zabars in N.Y.C. has a lot of great stuff. Discovered Zabar's last December with the rugelach, which I used to make dozens upon dozens of myself......now am very pleased with their poppy seed swirl.....actually baked, I guess, by Gertel's Uptown Inc. in Brooklyn.


All of my Vermont Jewish friends have a Brooklyn "connection" and would bring me back Brooklyn bagels........now too elderly.
My Italian aunts and uncles also settled in Brooklyn....but end of an era. No more connections myself to Brooklyn.


Do we all get nostalgic the older we become????????
My husband misses the good Polish onion rolls.
They just are not the same at the modern day supermarket bakeries.

If you're looking for bagels, Brooklyn Bagels on 441 near Kohl's has the best.

The Polish deli in Leesburg sells something similar to this. They are located on the left side of 441 shortly after the split for 27.

I have missed poppy seed bread and have looked for it for years....that picture makes me mouth water just looking at it! I grew up enjoying that treat.....it has a unique and wonderful taste.

I would love to find some....glad to know we can perhaps find some around here....Thanks for the picture Gracie!

The woman who used to make this in our neighborhood also made one very much like this, but I think it was with ground walnuts.....the filling was brown and nutty. Also good, but not as wonderful as the poppy seed type.

I maybe wrong and frequently am, but isn't there a Yahala Bakery up on 441?

I have to stop in, to check it out.

Was just at Yahala Bakery yesterday. Up on 441 in Summerfield. They have awesome desserts. Yum. They also make all kinds of breads. Didn't try any of those this time but they all looked delicious and I'm sure we will try some in the future. Didn't notice any poppy seed roll but I could have missed it since there were so many good looking sweets to take in. They also have German wursts and brats and I think are going to be expanding their sandwich menu soon. Plus both ladies there were so friendly and funny. Another good spot just outside the bubble when you want to go for a short ride.
