The Internet of Things: New Threats Emerge in a Connected World

I know I have a growing number of devices on my home network. How about you?

Symantec Blog:

Could your baby monitor be used to spy on you? Is your television keeping tabs on your viewing habits? Is it possible for your car to be hacked by malicious attackers? Or could a perfectly innocent looking device like a set-top box or Internet router be used as the gateway to gain access to your home computer?

A growing number of devices are becoming the focus of security threats as the Internet of Things (IoT) becomes a reality. What is the Internet of Things? Essentially, we are moving into an era when it isn’t just computers that are connected to the Internet. Household appliances, security systems, home heating and lighting, and even cars are all becoming Internet-enabled. The grand vision is of a world where almost anything can be connected—hence the Internet of Things.

Facebook won't let me log in because I block them from setting cookies and tracking me around the Internet. No Loss

That security article was describing the growing threat related to all of the different devices on home networks... cameras, routers, TV set top boxes, Smart TVs, printers, etc... all of those things are computers that could be compromised.

My network is relatively small but growing.

5 years ago I had 2, maybe 3 devices on my network.
3 years ago I had about 4 or 5 devices.
I count 13 devices on mine today including routers... routers are small computers too.

The count of devices on my network has just about doubled over the last 2 years. I will be adding a few more devices soon too. I suspect in 12 months I will have at least 3x the number of devices on my network that I had on it 3 years ago.

Keeping it all patched and secure is getting more complicated and likely to turn into a big job.

These new cars with Internet connections really scare me. I got out of Facebook a while ago, it wasn't easy.
I have an old lady phone, no smartphone, a PC and an Ipad. That's it. No more.
