Have you tried searching Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more Open the Books section and just type in Helsinki Stockholm and St. Petersburg Russia. The site should be loaded with historical information. Russia will probably give you the revolution which is really heavy reading.

Russka by Michener. It was terrific.

I found a book by Edward Rutherford but not Michener . Could this be the one?

There is a book named Russka by Michener. It is typical of his writing.

You might enjoy books by Tolstoy.

Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert K. Massie is a wonderful book. And you can always read
Doctor Zhivago by Louis Pasternak.

My reply may be too late for you but the book by Rutherford is good. Also the End of Sorrow/The Siege of Leningrad by Love..the Winter Garden by Kristen Hannah..city of thieves/David Benioff and the Madonnas of Leningrad/Debra Dean.

While touring Italy I realized I had left my boring, sleep-inducing crime novel in the nightstand of the previous hotel. Scanning the lobby for reads, I found a few novels in a row, and only one in English. Thank goodness I lost the predictable droning action novel and found this:

The Gates of Hell
The Gates Of Hell by Harrison E. Salisbury

I don't read much fiction.

You may not have time to plow through War and Peace. I read and enjoyed it. I don't think I've ever met another person who said they had read it all.

Dr. Zhivago has an interesting depiction of the Revolution. The movie was somewhat of a chic flick, but enjoyable.

Just for the record, I have a friend who read all of Proust.

We did that Baltic cruise several years ago, and I read Russka by Edward Rutherford before we went. You will have a wonderful time. Don't miss Catherines's Palace or the Hermatiage! Safe travels!

Well, that's impressive! I have read very little by French novelists.

I did read Madame Bovary by Flaubert because someone had made reference to it in something I was reading. I also read a lot of short stories by de Maupassant back in high school, but none of his novels. My favorite, dealing with gossip, was The Piece of String.

I read James Joyce's Ulysses - at least most of the first page.

I fell asleep during Moby Dick.
