From The Rough
Hello All,
I just wanted to get the word out and I felt no better place than TOTV that starting tomorrow the movie "From The Rough" will open at the Rialto in SS. I personally said in conversation with the powers that be behind this movie to get an opening weekend screen here in The Villages because I feel this community being so golf orientated might just like taking the time to see this story. The movie is one of those feel good stories that is much needed in the time of constant bad press in NCAA athletics. This movie is the true story of a very inspirational woman that I was fortunate enough to play my college golf for at Tennessee State University she became like a second mom to all of us. Dr. Catana Starks was the 1st female to Coach a sport at any level in collegiate athletics and she did it at the D-1 level she was also a long time professor and then went on to serve as the department head of the Human Performance Sport Science department. She did all of this while coordinating our tournament schedule which included when we didn't fly she would drive us all around the country in a 15 passenger van and the real kicker of this story is when I played for her she was in her 60's. still driving long hours and putting up with us. We were fortunate enough to send her out on top by winning the 2005 National Minority Championship in the process setting the all time tournament record and she retired the day after ending a coaching career that spanned 3 decades. In the movie she is portrayed by the super talented academy award nominee Taraji P. Henson who really did a fantastic job of playing Coach Starks correctly. Michael Clarke Duncan is also in the movie and sadly this was his last movie he shot before he passed. Tom Felton from Harry Potter fame is also in it. I owe her alot because she got us in the best tournaments against the best competition knowing her made me a better player (Been playing professionally since 2007) and importantly a better person. I know I will be over in Spanish Springs this weekend to see this great work of art about a very inspirational person.
