between here and Hammondsport NY
We are going to a wedding in Hammondsport NY. We think, now that we are retired, we will drive up and back. If we spent a few days along the way, where would you stay? What would you visit? Where would you eat? Any information would be helpful. Thanks a lot.

You will be in the heart of the N Y Finger lake region. There are many fine B&B in the area. There are many good vineyards in the area as well as a few ( DR Konstantin Franks and Herman Wiermre ) which are excellent. This is a beautiful area comprised of several very large lakes. Enjoy your stay

I love Hammondsport! I did an art show there every August for about 15 years. The town is almost untouched by modern civilization. No McDonalds or WalMart here. There is a great restaurant on the square called the Village Inn. Not much from the outside but gourmet food. Check out the gift shop next store called the Cinnamon Stick run by the dentist's wife. Bully Hill winery is a great place to eat on the top of a hill with great views of Keuka Lake. Esperanza is at the other end of Keuka Lake in Penn Yan. Awesome views and food. You will be close enough to Corning to go to Corning Glass. A must see. There is also the Glen Curtis Aviation Museum in Hammondsport that is fascinating. The Finger Lakes are New York's best kept secret.

The Rochester Lilac Festival runs from May 9-18 if you are in the area then. Grab a purple beer:

I think OP also wants to know where to stay/what to see on the way up to NY as well. I would try Beaufort, SC, or Charlotte as a start. Maybe Savannah. Outer Banks. As a start.

I would spend the first night in Savannah. Then head up I26 to Asheville for your second/third night and see the Biltmore. Then head up I81 through the Appalachian Mountains. When you get to Harriburg PA head north on US15, hook up with US17/I86 and head west to Bath, NY, from there to Hammondsport. There are many nice stops along that route.
I was raised in the Finger Lake area, very near Hammondsport. My sister lives at the north end of the lake (Keuka Lake), in Branchport - which is where The Esperanza Mansion is located. (My sister works there. Until this year she managed the Esperanza Rose, a dinner/tour boat on the lake. Unfortunately the boat needed some expensive repairs and will no longer cruise the lake.) Drive around the lake and tour some of the wineries. East lake road is a little off the lake and a faster route, West lake road is down near the lake, slow and curvy, very busy during the summer months. Last year we came back through Phili and down the coast. Took some time but was enjoyable. |
