air conditioning repair costs
 

We've had a quote of $4,500 to replace the compressor and coils in our 10-year-old 2-bed 2-bath ranch. Is this high, low or about right? Can anyone help?

I would highly recommend getting 3 estimates to get an accurate idea of what's about right. Just a suggestion.

If it is 10 years old I would get a price on complete replacement. It cannot be much more.

Multiple estimates is ALWAYS a good plan

Isn't a Compressor and coils a complete replacement!

Complete replacement would include the "furnace & AC" as a SYSTEM/UNIT.

A new system would consist of a new airhandler (the inside unit which houses the evaporator coil, fan, expansion valve, etc. ) and the outside unit which houses the compressor, condenser coil, reversing valve, etc. This assumes that your line set (copper liquid and vapor lines) and thermostat are OK and compatible. Ideally, they will also evaluate your duct work and replace/repair any parts that are leaking or poorly installed. It would also be advisable for them to do a cooling load calculation on your house to ensure that the right sizes system (in terms of tons of cooling) is installed. The quality of the installation is usually more important than the choice of which brand of equipment. The incremental cost of better equipment is usually small and worth considering.

In 2011 when I sold my home in Baltimore, it was 13 years old and I had to replace the A/C. We put in a 2.5 ton Carrier coompressor and air handler for $3500. We had a 2 story 2200 sf home.

On Home Depot they offer a 2 ton system for $1899 without installation.

if you need another estimate which I highly suggest....another vote for CHUCK FARRELL he's a mom and pop operation,,,been in the area forever doing GREAT and AFFORDABLE work..and most of all he is HONEST

Smart, efficient and reasonable.

No as shown the A coil in housed in the air handler unit ( the boxy part that you see inside the house). A coil produces lots of condensation from producing Cold radiator design unit, it also has drain system to drain the water down through you plumbing and out of the house. This Also need inpsected to prevent clogging and water dumping below the uinit where ever it located. The air handler fan pulls the cool air through the A coils and throuhout the house. So after 10 years of use I would inspect the A coils for corrosion also if you don't replace the air handler unit as John W and other suggested. I would get several estimates see if you getting resonable deal as suggested. They all cost about the same unless you have heat pump units.
